Spied facelifted 2020 Audi A5 Sportback reveals some of its secrets and announces that it will remain one of the best fastback sedans on the market

An all-new 2020 Audi A5 Sportback is nearing its introduction. While we are still months away from the reveal, numerous spy shots of A5 Sportback prototypes provide us with a unique glimpse into the future of the popular Audi fastback sedan.

Captured somewhere in Scandinavia earlier this year, and lately, in Germany and Spain, the 2020 Audi A5 Sportback prototype shows new light clusters in the back, new tailpipes, and even some mods on the bumpers. The car is likely to assume the technology from the latest Audi A4, and it will remain as one of the most alluring small executive sedans on the U.S. market.

Exterior

  • Standard front-end LEDs
  • Standard honeycomb grille
  • New wheel design and new exhaust tips

You cannot expect massive changes. After all, Audi A5 Sportback proved to be a somewhat successful design since its inception back in the 2000s. The new model will, however, take heavily after the latest 2020 Audi A4.

The A5 Sportback should inherit a bit more sophisticated aura with the flat grille, new bumper design front and back, and completely new LED lights.

Add to this some subtle sporty details such as the honeycomb grille, a bit chubbier wheels compared to what you have on an average A4 and you have yourself a sporty sedan. Well, a sporty fastback. After all, this is only a subtle facelift, and Audi isn’t the one known for massive experimentation in the design department with its facelifted cars. Honestly, sometimes I am waiting for Audi redesigns only to see more cool wheel options and tech.

Interior

  • High-end infotainment system with a 10.1-inch central display
  • Digital cockpit as standard with the 12.3-inch screen behind the steering wheel
  • Unchanged seating arrangement and passenger space

The Audi A5 Sportback has always offered a somewhat sportier aura and character compared to the beloved A4.

It was the same for the interior arrangement, and it will be the same as soon as the facelifted version reaches the showrooms. In this case, I already know what to expect from the A5 Sportback interior. It will get that awesome digital cockpit with a 12.3-inch screen behind the steering wheel and a large centrally mounted display. Yes, it will be much like than in any other Audi, but admit it, that’s actually awesome. So much so that I would not be surprised if Audi A5 Sportback gets gesture controls. Volkswagen and its development teams announced the tech a long time ago. It should even appear in the next-gen Golf, but I am curious if the Germans will give it to us with the Audi A5 Sportback. The Audi Multimedia Interface (MMI) is already a fine piece of tech, but I haven’t seen yet Audi offering what it showed at CES 2012, in its cars. Then, the company revealed a completely integrated gesture control-based infotainment system. Sure, everything was just in a trial version, but it showed some features that you can now have in the latest BMWs, for example.

As far as space for the occupants goes, you cannot expect anything new in that department. In that regard, this is all you can get:

Front Head Room 39.4 inches
Front Leg Room 41.3 inches
Front Shoulder Room 55.7 inches
Second Head Room 37 inches
Second Leg Room 35.1 inches
Second Shoulder Room 54.5 inches

Obviously, the same as on the outgoing model. 21.7 cubic feet of space included.

Drivetrain

  • Seriously efficient 2.0-liter TDI mild-hybrid for Europe
  • S5 Sportback Available with a 3.0-liter, 354-horsepower engine
  • It can coast between the speeds of 20 and 99 mph thanks to the mild-hybrid setup

Volkswagen worked hard with the development of the new generation of mild-hybrid 2.0 TDI engines. The new Audi A5 Sportback is likely to get the tech that will also land in the new Golf.

With a 48-volt electric system, small battery, and powerful starter/generator, Audi A5 Sportback will get some rather curios capabilities.

It will be able to coast at speeds between 20 mph and 99 mph with the ICE turned off. I think that this is the most critical step toward radical emission reduction within the Audi diesel lineup. However, this will not mean a lot for the U.S. buyers, as I don’t believe the Audi A5 Sportback TDI will land on this soil. Instead, we will get a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine in various states of tune. All of them will couple to a dual-clutch transmission. No manual available.

However, spy photographers were more than persistent in looking for something special with so many camouflaged A5 Sportback cars on European roads. And they have caught an S5 Sportback on tape (well, SD card). The S5 Sportback already has a fantastic 3.0-liter TDI with EPC (electrically powered compressor) and a mild-hybrid setup. It develops 347 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, which is enough to launch the Quattro-equipped S5 Sportback to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds.

The U.S.-bound S5 Sportback will likely continue with the 3.0-liter TFSI with 354 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

All in all, the most important novelty seems to be the mild-hybrid, four-cylinder diesel for Europe. I do, however, believe that facelifted 2020 A5 Sportback will achieve a tad more than 27 mpg combined. That’s the value the 2019 Audi A5 Sportback Prestige 45 TFSI with 248 horsepower manages to do right now.

Prices

Starting at $44,200, the 2019 Audi A5 Sportback is not exactly a cheap vehicle. The redesigned version, although remaining largely the same, will jack that price up further. I expect the basic 2020 Audi A5 Sportback to start at $45,500 at the very least. Go for a bit more equipment, for a bit more pizzazz and the price will go close to $56,000. As is the case with the current model on offer, opting for the S5 Sportback at the very start may be the smartest decision. Not only do you get a far more powerful engine for that added seven or eight grand, but a bit more gear as well. It will be the same deal with the 2020 A5 Sportback and 2020 S5 Sportback.

Competition

BMW 4 Series

As the only direct competitor, the BMW 4 Series offers even sportier appearance and sportier driving characteristics for basically the same price. Unlike the Audi S5 Sportback, however, the most powerful BMW 440i xDrive Gran Coupe has an engine developing "only" 320 horsepower. Audi S5 Sportback has an engine with almost 30 horsepower more. Nevertheless, the xDrive setup is only optional for the 430i and the 440i, while RWD comes as standard. With Audi, Quattro comes as standard.

Jaguar XE

The Jaguar XE is a family sedan. A perfect competitor to the likes of the BMW 3 Series. Its styling, while somewhat less flamboyant compared to the XF, definitely evokes some clear sporty aspirations. That is why I included it on this list. The XE is available as a standard model with a 247-horsepower engine, but also in an R-Dynamic guise with the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and 296 horsepower. It is the same engine as in the base F-type. Nevertheless, with a base price of less than $40,000, the XE considerably undercuts BMW and Audi.

Conclusion

With the latest facelift, Audi tends to prolong the life of the new 2020 A5 Sportback by at least three more years. We can expect it to reach our shores in the A5 Sportback and S5 Sportback guises in the next few months. The truth is that it won’t be considerably different compared to the latest A4, but it will bring somewhat different characters focused on sport, high-tech, and efficiency. Compared with its immediate competitors, the A5 Sportback will remain as one of the most alluring vehicles on the market. If nothing because of its sophisticated design and serious engineering prowess.

  • Leave it
    • Far more expensive compared to standard sedans
    • Not as focused on Sport mode as the RWD BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
    • A generation-old engine tech in its base form
