Audi’s AMG A45 fighter promises to be a feisty one

LISTEN 04:48

Being the cheapest RS model from the company’s performance heritage, the RS3 is a serious machine with absolute bonkers of performance and presence with updated tech and mechanics which were absent in the 2020 model year.

The Managing Director of Audi Sport, Sebastian Grams stated that “with the third generation of the Audi RS 3 Sportback and the second generation of Audi RS 3 Sedan, we now offer premium sports cars that are suitable for everyday use and equally thrilling to drive on public roads and racetracks”. Will the 2022 RS3 be the most anticipated sport sedan in its segment? Let’s find out in this detailed review.

Being more dynamic than ever, the new RS3 becomes the most powerful A3 with a few carryover traits from the outgoing generation and added a lot of new features to make it stand out. The exterior and interior design follow Audi’s newly updated philosophy that is seen in the A3 and S3 but in a sportier way. The unique inline-5 engine still makes its way to the new RS3 churning out the same 394 horses through all four wheels. But what Audi has done is that they have added the RS Torque Splitter with RS-centric driving modes for enhancing its agile nature. That said, Audi will launch only the Sedan in the US, unlike Europe where both the Sedan and the Sportback will sail together. The RS3 Sedan will be priced around 62,000 euros which is about $72,000 and will compete with the upcoming AMG CLA 45 and BMW M2 CS.

Race-inspired Exterior Styling Elements

Following the redesigned exterior styling dynamics of the A3 sedan, The RS3 has the broader and sharper wedge-like LED DRLs and headlights at the front. However, all you matrix headlights fanboys will have an option. The wide front bumper designed specifically for the RS along with a bigger honey-comb mesh blacked-out grille gives a sportier visual effect. A few sporty touches include brake cooling vents which are found fake in the regular A3 along with quite a few bulges over the hood.

From the sides, the new RS3 is not as big as the front suggests. The sides have a beautiful set of 19-inch alloy wheels with a ten-spoke design and are wrapped Pirelli P Zero semi-slicks. The sharp rear LEDs are similar to the A3, giving the rear an aggressive stance. Unlike the A3, the RS3 gets two fairly big oval tailpipes accompanied by a huge diffuser which are not fake, unlike the A3. When launched in the US market, the new 2022 RS3 will be available in Kyalami green and Kemora gray.

The dimensions are not identical to the A3 is wider at 73.2 inches, longer at 178.8 inches and even has a slightly increased 103.2 inches of wheelbase. Audi claims that the new RS3 has a wider front axle track by 1.2 inches for added stability. The height is set at 55.2 inches and the ground clearance is not yet declared by Audi but is expected to be around 5 inches. The overall curb weight of the new generation is about 3,272 pounds.

A True RS Interior

As the top model of the A3 lineup, you will have no compromise on the quality and features available in the interior of the RS3. Not everything but the majority of them are redesigned thoroughly including the dashboard. The design has changed and so are the circular air vents which are now flat with the exterior color accents. The 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit is carried over from the outgoing generation but the interface has been updated with RS-centric dials and “RS Runway’’ rev-counter. A 10.1-inch infotainment screen is now placed in the middle, unlike the outgoing model which had the screen up on the dash which made it look distracting. The leather-covered steering wheel remains the same as the older RS3 with a flat-bottom defining the RS superiority. The center console looks less cluttered with a small drive selector, a few buttons, and knobs for the HVAC with two cup holders and an armrest that is placed a bit behind.

The interior quality with fit and finish is excellent. The door panels have leather stitchings with other soft-touch materials that carry on with the dashboard. The seats have a honeycomb mesh design similar to the intake vents with the RS logo at the top. The sports seats come with honeycomb-mesh stitching with an optional Nappa leather upholstery. Both the front and seats are comfortable providing a good quality ride. As for the spaciousness, the front has all the space needed for a comfortable drive in contrast to the rear where you will struggle to fit three people, and also it can become cramped due to lower headroom and legroom. Audi is yet to disclose the interior dimensions but has mentioned 11.6 cubic feet of boot space. Now, the space is adequate, especially being a compact sedan.

A few of the distinctive interior features of the 2022 RS3 Sedan are as follows:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control.
  • Leather-wrapped RS steering wheel.
  • 12.3-inch MID with an updated interface.
  • Nappa leather seats with power-adjustability and heated options.
  • Leather and carbon-fiber trims.

With the latest MIB 3 system, the updated infotainment system is now more intuitive and incorporates a bigger 10.1-inch touchscreen display compared to the outgoing generation. Besides Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, sat-nav, radio, WiFi, and Bluetooth connectivity as standard. A few important infotainment features are as follows:

  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
  • 10.1-inch touchscreen display with MIB 3.
  • WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.
  • Satellite radio.
  • Premium audio system. (Optional)

Five-cylinder Maniac

Since its first generation, the RS3 has been powered by a unique five-cylinder engine and is still under the hood of the second generation. This turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five now puts out 394 horses and 369 pound-feet of maximum torque available as early as 2,250 revs. The Quattro all-wheel drive makes its way to the newer generation RS3 as well with a seven-speed dual-clutch shiftable automatic transmission. According to Audi, the new RS3 claims 62 miles an hour in just 3.8 seconds which is quite impressive in the segment and will continue building up speed until it hits the limiter at 155 miles per hour.

Besides using an award-winning engine, Audi has equipped the new generation RS3 with an RS Torque Splitter as a standard which replaces the rear-axle differential with an electronically controlled multiple-disc clutch that intelligently adjusts the power flowing through the rear axle and even increases the torque on the wheel taking the maximum weight. This ensures a lot more dynamic handling characteristics with the new RS3. As standard, this beast of a mid-size performance sedan gets sports suspensions from MacPherson. Adaptive suspension is available too but with some extra cash. With all the newer components, the handling superiority must be in the pocket of Audi in the segment but for that, we have to wait for the production units to hit the US market and we get to drive one.

As far as the braking performance, newly developed larger six-piston steel brakes are available as standard but a set of ceramic brakes are available with the RS Dynamic package. The improved airflow through the brakes is increased to a whopping 20 percent as claimed by Audi. The driving modes available are Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, RS Individual, and Efficiency. The Dynamic is the sportiest setting that changes throttle response and even opens the valves for the exhaust for the inline-five to sing. The Efficiency improves the fuel economy and that being said, Audi measured 20.3-21.2 miles per gallon for the city, an estimated 33.6-36.2 miles per gallon for the highways, and about 27.0-28.7 miles per gallon combined. With a 14.5-gallon gas tank, the range would be pretty good too.

The new generation RS3 is a great car and for the American market, it is no loss that we will get the sedan and the hatchback. The sedan looks absolutely menacing especially in the Kyalami green with black exterior accents. As for the driving impressions, we will get back to you when it is done and the RS3 is expected to hit the markets in the early fall of 2022. We have an upcoming very capable competition which is the M2 CS that will put on some smiles on the Bimmer fans. The already present Mercedes-AMG CLA45 is a great competitor but has a slightly lower engine power compared to the RS3.
