At a time when wagons are slowly evolving from being family haulers to performance beasts, people in the U.S. are missing out on a lot of action. The Audi RS4 and the RS6 Avant give us the major #FOMO feels. Audi has told wagon-lovers in the U.S. not to give up hopes yet, as the company said, "We always look at potential new opportunities in the market. It’s a niche to explore. We keep holding discussions. Keep writing us letters.” That’s not a confirmation in any way, but it sounds like an assurance for the time being. Now, the company has finally unveiled the 2020 Audi RS4 Avant with aesthetic changes and a few changes inside the cabin. Is it better than the previous iteration?

Introducing the Audi A1’s more adventurous cousin

The Audi A1 citycarver — yep, no caps here — is living proof that automakers will go to any lengths to attach the words “crossover” or “SUV” to their models. The result is the creation of sub, sub-lines born out of sub-lines born out of main model lines. It’s confusing on a lot of levels, but that’s the nature of the beast in the auto biz these days. On the surface, the A1 citycarver looks like a more rugged version of the A1. While there is some truth to that, appearances can be deceiving, too. The A1 citycarver is slightly higher than the A1 and it also comes with suspension tweaks aimed to make it more appealing to rugged urbanites who are looking for more adventures with their A1s. Most of the bits though come directly from the A1, so it is classified as a different version of Audi’s hatchback, the A1 citycarver is just an A1 wrapped in tighter clothing. The Audi A1 citycarver goes on sale this month in Europe at a yet-to-be-determined price tag. There’s no word yet whether it makes the trek to America or not.

The long-roof Four Ring compact gets a thorough refresh

Audi’s current sedan lineup consists of the A8, the A7, and the A6, followed by the A4 taking up the smallest slot of them all. Among these four-door nameplates, Audi also offers a variety of wagon iterations for added practicality. The A4 Avant takes up that space in the A4 family, and with the arrival of the 2020 A4 Avant, we finally get a good look at Audi’s new entry-level wagon in all its glory. Updates for the new wagon come everywhere, whether it’s the fresh exterior styling or the cleaner center console in the interior. The 2020 A4 Avant also benefits from the latest in Audi technology, not to mention a lineup of gas- and diesel-powered engines — with mild hybrid assist — that should cater to the whims and preferences of all the customers in markets where the A4 Avant is available. The 2020 Audi A4 Avant will be available sometime in the latter half of the year. Unfortunately, the U.S. market isn’t getting the 2020 A4 Avant, as has been the case for a long time.

Throwing yet another crossover onto the pile

Audi’s crossover and SUV lineup is already mighty stout, but that isn’t stopping the Four Rings from adding yet another high-rider to the list. The latest will take the name Q4, and as you might expect, it’ll squeeze in between the Q3 and Q5 within Audi’s stable. Alternatively, the new crossover could also carry the name Q3 Sportback. Either way, the fresh ‘ute will offer a more coupe-like roofline compared to the standard Q3, but carry over the current Q3’s interior appointment, engine, and drivetrain, plus all the options.

Audi first kicked off production of the Q3 luxury subcompact crossover in 2011 for the 2012 model year, following it up with a series of refreshes in 2014 and 2015. Also offered as a pair of tuned versions from Audi Sport GmbH under the SQ3 and RS Q3 nomenclature, it looks as though the Four Rings is gearing up to release a second generation for the go-faster Q3’s, as evidenced by this series of spy shots showing a black-and-white test mule out and about for some apex huntin’ at the Nurburgring.

The Audi A3 was spotted testing on public roads with what appears to be a production-ready exterior. The hatchback is wrapped in camo from front to rear, but the headlamps, the grille, and other details hint at the company’s recent corporate look. Another special edition German sports coupe is headed to the Japanese market

The new-generation Audi A8 is understandably getting all the love today, but it’s far from the only Audi model making the news. Over in Japan, Audi has introduced an exclusive limited-edition version of the TT sports coupe. It’s officially called the TT 1.8 Lighting Style Edition, and it’s making us wonder (yet again) what we did to deserve not getting any of these special editions in the U.S.

The TT Lighting Style Edition features a steady diet of cosmetic upgrades. It has exclusive color offerings, aesthetic upgrades, and packages that come standard on the model. Audi also picked a good variant of the TT – the 1.8 – to dress up in the exclusive garb. The automaker didn’t say how many of the TT Lighting Style Editions it plans to roll out in the Japanese market, but it did say that the car will be priced in the market at 5.29 million yen, or around $46,200 based on current exchange rates. The price tag is surprisingly modest considering that here in the U.S., the 2.0 TT starts at $43,500. Fortunately, this is one of those times where we don’t really miss out on a special edition model since American customers can basically order the same thing. That said, it still would be nice if Audi sent more of its special edition models to the U.S. That way, we wouldn’t have to keep looking to the other side of the world to satisfy our SE fixes.

2017 Audi Q3 - First Impressions

Long ago, Audi was dominating Rallycross events in a Sport Quattro S1. It helped to brand Quattro as one of the best all-wheel drive systems in the world. Several years later, the A8 garnered popularity with its starring role in The Transporter, while the TT earned the attention of passersby who gave themselves whiplash as they took in the unusual design for the time. Since then, the RS4 and R8 eared themselves a spot on many dream lists across the world and more pedestrian Audis like the A4 were eating into BMW’s sales.

The aforementioned are all cars. Today, things are a bit different over at Audi as it seems the priority is to invest more and more into SUVs. In North America, there are already three in the lineup. A fourth, the Q2, is on sale overseas and is expected to eventually arrive on our shores. Then there’s the Q8 which is expected to be even bigger than the Q7 along with a four-door coupe-like SUV a la BMW X6 that is also expected to join the family.

Why are Audi’s SUV’s now overshadowing the cars in its lineup? I decided to take one out for a week to find out.

At this point, there are so many “Black Edition” models floating around that we can’t tell what manufacturer actually fired the first shot. It seems like just about every model out there has a Black Edition of some kind. There’s the 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera Black Edition, The Mazda3 Sport Black Edition, Volkswagen Scirocco Black Edition, Porsche Cayman Black Edition, and Nissan Qashqai Black Edition – just to name a small handful from a very large pool of available models out there. Hell, Even Bentley has done it. Now, Audi is adding to its lineup of “Black Edition” models with this new iteration of the Q3. As usual, the model comes with just a few “upgrades” that include some black interior trim and a few exterior pieces done up in black as well.

It’s really like one manufacturer decided to do a Black Edition and everybody else decided to jump off the same bridge. Just like the use of Alcantara. It was once something that was once cool and eccentric but is now just boring and overplayed. As such, Audi is actually replacing the S Plus Model with the Black Edition in its lineup, which means most of the features the model is boasting, were already there to begin with. This includes things like SD card-based navigation, cruised control, privacy glass, and black interior that, of course, has some Alcantara mixed in too.

So, with that said, let’s take a closer look at the new Q3 Black Edition and see if there’s really any hype worth writing home about.

A little bit of gloss to keep it feeling fresh

The Audi Q3 is the German brand’s tall-stance, compact-fitting crossover product, which has been around since 2011. Prior to the introduction of the Audi Q2 at the Geneva Motor Show back in March, the Q3 was Audi’s smallest SUV-style offering. These days, the Q3 is looking like it should be getting a second generation, but before it does, Audi has decided to keep the old five-door fresh by way of new aesthetic upgrades and a new special edition model. All the bits under the skin have been unaltered, but outside, you’ll find sportier trim, new wheels, and a few other bits and bobs added. On the new special edition, the cabin has been updated as well.

The new special edition is called the S line competition, which joins trim levels like the Design and Sport trim as the top-dog kit. Plenty of folks are holding out to see what the second-generation might bring, but for those who simply can’t wait, the updated Audi Q3 might offer just the right style to justify a purchase.

The e-tron gets a few new standard features for 2017

Audi had been touting the electrification of its models for quite a while, but it was all talk until January of 2016 when the brand released the 2016 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron. In typical Audi fashion, the A3 e-tron was nearly identical to its gasoline and diesel drinking brethren. Well, aside from a hidden charging port and a fancy little badge to demonstrate the cars electrified presence on the road, that is. Available with just one engine, a 1.4-liter four-cylinder, and an electric motor, the e-tron delivers just over 200 horsepower and can hit the 60-mph sprint in less than eight seconds. It’s not wildly impressive, but the car does offer around 31 miles of all-electric driving for those of you with a really short daily commute.

Another cool feature about the e-tron is Audi’s collaboration with SunPower. Through SunPower, Audi is able to offer charging via solar panels at your home. Of course, this probably won’t be cheap, but if don’t mind paying for the technology, it could save you a little money in the long run. Plus, you know, it’s good for the environment too.

For 2017, the A3 e-tron carries over unchanged for the most part. It does take on a couple of small updates, and there are some new options available that really add to the overall luxuriousness of the car. Pricing for the 2017 model year has also changed a bit, but nothing too drastic. With that said, let’s take a look at the 2016 – 2017 Audi A3 e-tron and talk about the minor changes that come with the 2017 model year.

Audi’s mid-cycle update of the A3 brings new technology and a revised engine lineup

The Audi A3 came to life in 1996, and was originally offered as a three-door hatchback. It was built on Volkswagen’s Group A platform, which means its underpinnings were shared with cars like the Audi TT, Volkswagen Golf, Seat Toledo, and even the Skoda Octavia. As time went on, a five-door hatchback was added to the lineup, as well as a cabriolet.

The A3 went through a third-generation overhaul for the 2012 model year, and in 2013, we were introduced to the A3 sedan at the 2013 New York Auto Show. The sedan went on sale in Germany and the U.K. later that year, and now after just a couple short years, it looks like the A3 Sedan is up for a facelift.

We saw the most recent spy shots of the new Audi A3 doing some cold weather testing back in December, and now, Audi has finally unveiled the new A3 and lots of juicy details about it. The update to the A3 comes complete with new driver assistance systems, a new range of engines, and some redesigned features outside. On top of all that, Audi has finally integrated the Audi virtual cockpit into the A3. The new A3 is available in Sportback, three-door, and Cabriolet forms, as well as the popular sedan form that we’re about to talk about going forward. So with that said, let’s take a walk around the new A3 and see just what we can get excited about.

Audi’s most affordable cabriolet gets a significant facelift

Launched in 2003, the Audi A3 brought new standards to the premium compact market. A step ahead of the competition thanks to its well-equipped interior, state-of-the-art technology, and advanced driving assistance features, the A3 became a popular choice in both Europe and the U.S. Also, the fact that Ingolstadt offered no fewer than four body styles and performance-oriented S models for each of them made the A3 the most complete nameplate in the segment. Almost four years have passed since the third-gen compact went in production and Audi unveiled the facelifted versions of each and every variant of the A3, including the Convertible.

Much like all new vehicles the four-ringed automaker has introduced in 2015, the A3 Convertible received sharper and sportier styling features. Inspired by the design language seen on the new A4, the new A3 Convertible is by far the most aggressive looking compact drop-top Audi has released to date, especially when equipped with the S Line package. But, while the exterior gained updates worthy of a redesign, the interior remained pretty much unchanged, with all the noticeable upgrades operated in the technology department.

More changes occurred under the hood, with two brand-new engines and a dual-clutch transmission on offer. Among them, there’s a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine, available for the first time on the compact. Audi also developed a more powerful and fuel-efficient 2.0-liter four-banger, which unlike the three-pot, will cross the pond to the U.S. to replace the previous range-topping unit. It won’t get here until 2017, but that gives us enough time to have a in-depth look at Audi’s most affordable cabriolet.

The most expensive Q2 yet

Launched for the 2017 model year, the Q2 is the latest Audi nameplate to hit the market and the company’s smallest crossover yet. Underpinned by Volkswagen’s MQB platform that is shared with the Golf and the Audi TT among other cars, the Q2 was designed by Marc Lichte and shares styling cues with the larger Q3 and Q5 SUVs. Available with a selection of gasoline and diesel four-cylinder engines, the Q2 enables Audi to compete in a new niche. At 4.2 meters (165 inches) long, the Q2 is about the size of the Mini Countryman, which makes it just the second vehicle to join this premium class.

With no competition from Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the foreseeable future, the Q2 will most likely take a significant bite into the Countryman’s sales over the next years thanks to its more rugged design and luxurious interior. With the small crossover having just arrived in dealerships, Audi is launching a limited-edition model to sit at the top of the range. It’s called the Q2 Edition #1 and for the time being it is available in the United Kingdom only.

Essentially an S Line model with additional features, the Edition #1 sports a bespoke paint job and handful of custom interior features. On top of that, it comes with extra standard equipment to justify the more expensive price tag. But, more about that in our short review below.

German tuner launches new program for Audi’s entry level luxury sedan

The Audi A4 doesn’t get the same kind of adulation reserved for the R8 supercar or the attention that is normally commanded by the A6 and A7 luxury sedans. But ever since it first arrived in 1994, the A4 has earned the reputation of a model that brings out the Audi fan in a lot of people. It’s true that while it may the entry-level model in the German automaker’s premium lineup of sedans, the A4 has carved out an identity unique to its own.

That identity is also why a tuner like ABT Sportsline has spent hours upon hours of its time building programs specifically for the A4. The tuner’s latest work also speaks to the versatility of the A4 as the kit comes with engine upgrade packages for two engine variants of the sedan, one for the 2.0-liter TFSI that nets 330 horsepower and another for the 3.0-liter TDI V-6 engine that results in 325 ponies.

There’s not a lot of flash that went with the creation of this program. ABT Sportsline opted to keep it simple and effective and the results are what you see. Exterior upgrades are limited, although there are a couple of aero components that provide both cosmetic and handling improvements. A fresh new set of wheels also adds another layer to the A4, as does a suspension upgrade that ties everything together to create a more balanced ride for the sedan.

It’s fitting that ABT Sportsline embarked on building this program as it celebrates its 120th anniversary this year. The A4 has, for a long time, been one of its most tuned models, and with the release of this new upgrade, it seems that the tuner’s old habits aren’t about to die down anytime soon.

2016 Audi S1 by B&B Automobiltechnik

As a fan and champion of everything related to hot hatchbacks, I often find myself giggling every time an aftermarket tuner presents a tuning program for a hot hatch. I’m not ashamed to admit it, but my reaction was no different when B&B Automobiltechnik presented its latest tuning exploit, a program for the Audi S1 that heavily focuses on the engine.

This is a good one, especially for those who aren’t satisfied with the S1’s standard output of 231 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. B&B certainly addressed that by presenting a five-stage engine upgrade program that helps the Audi pocket rocket increase its output to as much as 380 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque.

There’s plenty to digest here, not the least of which is the differences between the five-stage engine upgrade. In addition to that, B&B is also offering chassis and suspension improvements and a new set of 18-inch wheels that promises to add some extra jolt of character into the car.

The versatility of the program is evident and B&B deserves credit for that. But the kit also its downside, which I will address shortly. Let’s just say that the five-stage engine upgrade may be overwhelming on the surface, but does one really differentiate greatly from the next upgrade, or could B&B have made it simpler for everyone by leaving more room for distinction among the programs?

Adding power and speed to an already good looking crossover

Placed just under the Q3 as far as badges go, the Q2 is more than just a shrunken Q3. Not only it sports unique fascias, it also has a coupe-style roof, setting it apart from its siblings and placing it in the same market as the BMW X2. After almost two years on the market, the regular crossover was joined by the performance-oriented SQ2 model, launched at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.

Sportier on the outside and powered by a beefed-up, turbocharged engine, the SQ2 raises above the competition in terms of looks and power. It basically offers you the sportiest and most potent option in this niche, at least until BMW rolls out the X2 M sometime in the future. Does it have enough power and extra features to stand out? The other German entry-level sports sedan

The Audi A3 has only been around in its current form since 2015, having been refreshed after its third-generation introduction in 2012. Next year, for the 2017 model year, the A3 will receive a sharpened look inside and out, along with Audi’s new Virtual Cockpit gauge cluster. Nestled between the commotion is this 2016 model year A3 – fitted with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and quattro AWD. We decided to check out the A3 sedan before the winds of change swept its way.

The A3 rides on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, shared with the VW Golf and A3 Sportback. It holds its four-cylinder powerplant transversely between its front fenders, yet somehow offers impressive neutrality when driving through the corners. Its interior is clean and modern, having been mildly refreshed for 2015. And despite the new exterior look looming on the horizon, the A3 remains a fresh and stylish.

My tester came loaded with the Prestige package, an $8,850 option that brings a slew of features that range from larger wheels and LED headlights to heated front seats, navigation, and several active safety features like adaptive cruise control an active lane assist. Optional atop of that are the 18-inch “five-arm wing” wheels and summer tires, and the Sport package, which adds front sport seats, Audi drive mode select, the three-spoke steering wheel, and sport suspension.

Needless to say, my tester came packed to the gills. It’s price was inflated as well, cresting the $45,000 mark after the destination charge was added. Nevertheless, let’s check out the 2016 Audi A3.
