2019 Audi A7 - Driven

2019 Audi A7 - Driven

We took the Audi A7 for a spin to see if four-door coupes are still hip

In the past 20 to 25 years, automotive executives have been looking at ways to activate new areas of the public by coming up with weird niches, some more successful than others. The Audi A7 is a proud flag-bearer of the four-door coupe segment that’s managed to keep its head above the water as consumers flock to buy the latest crossover SUV. Get behind the wheel of Audi’s sleek answer to the Mercedes-Benz CLS and it’s easy to see why as this might just be one of the best models Audi currently sales Stateside.

Introduced back in 2017, the second-generation Audi A7 set about fixing just about everything that was wrong with the original luxury four-door coupe from Ingolstadt. Broadly speaking, the Germans have managed to tick all the boxes while also improving in areas that didn’t really need improving such as the design - one of Audi’s undeniable strengths despite what you may consider as an overly aggressive brand recognition strategy that ended up making all of Audi’s products look alike. Still, the A7 manages to stand out from the crowd with the single-piece rear light cluster and it looks sportier than ever, the muscular vibe given by the exterior being bolstered by its handling and performance. While not new on the market, we jumped at the opportunity of driving the A7 right away to see if there’s any wind left in the sails of this quirky niche.

Audi's New RS7 Sportback Finally Has a Look to Call Its Own

Audi’s New RS7 Sportback Finally Has a Look to Call Its Own

It’s the freshest-looking RS7 that we’ve seen in a long time

For the longest time, the RS7 has represented Audi in the high-end performance saloon segment. It’s done its job about as well as it can, but there was always something about the RS7 that somehow kept it from reaching its full potential. It has never lacked in power or driving dynamics so it’s neither of those things. What kept the RS7 from completely standing out in a sea of high-performance four-door saloons was its design.

To be clear, past RS7s didn’t look bad; they just didn’t stand out, either. They looked like your typical era-correct Audis that just happened to come with bigger bodies and far more luxurious interiors. Audi wants to change that narrative, and with the arrival of the 2020 RS7 Sportback, it just might have found that perfect balance of design and performance that could change the way we look at the RS7 Sportback moving forward.

The 2020 Audi A7 Has Been Electrified, But to What Extent and What Cost?

There may be a slight drop in usable cargo room and performance, though

The current Audi A7 is a real looker, it offers pretty decent performance for a car its size, and you can’t argue with its interior quality of technology. But, the one technology it wasn’t privy to was electrification. Well, not at least until now, anyway. That’s right, folks, Audi has just introduced the A7 Sportback 55 TFSI E Quattro PHEV. What does that mean for performance and fuel economy? Well, Audi didn’t just toss in an electric motor and battery – there are some serious changes here, and you should probably be aware of them.

Have a Target on Your Head and Like to Go Fast? You Need this Bulletproof, 760-Horsepower Audi RS7 by AddArmor

Armored cars come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but rarely do they come with a 202-mph top speed. This particular Audi RS7 is one such example, and it’s probably the coolest Audi you’ll ever see. Such platitudes come with a great deal of expectation, but you won’t have to worry about this particular RS7 meeting — and exceeding — those expectations. It’s called the AddArmor APR RS7, and it was built to withstand heavy artillery and embarrass any fool who thinks they can take this car on in a drag race.

The AddArmor APR RS7 is the brainchild of Wisconsin-based specialty car builder AddArmor. As the company’s name so obviously implies, AddArmore specializes in comprehensive armor upgrades for vehicles. Every so often, though, the specialist goes the extra mile by enlisting the help of a performance tuner to truly spice up its creations. The result of this ambitious endeavor is the AddArmor APR RS7, one of the few cars in the world that can withstand a heavy artillery assault, look oh-so fine doing it, and blast off to 202 mph without breaking much of a sweat.

2019 Audi Q8

Audi’s answer to the BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne Coupe

After six years of rumors that began when Audi trademarked the Q8 name in 2012, the German company finally unveiled its proposition against the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. It’s called the Audi Q8, and it’s heavily based on a concept car that the Germans introduced in 2018. It’s modern, aggressive, it packs Audi’s latest technology, and promises to give the BMW X6, Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, and the Porsche Cayenne Coupe a good run for their money.

When BMW introduced the X6 in 2009, a new segment was born. But although the crossover BMW describes as a Sports Activity Coupe proved somewhat popular with SUV enthusiasts, the trend didn’t catch on with other automakers until 2013. That’s when Mercedes-Benz revealed plans to develop a coupe-like crossover based on the M-Class. Shortly after, rumors of a Cayenne Coupe emerged, signaling that Germany’s finest automakers finally pay more attention to this niche. Come 2018 and Audi joined the battle with the prettiest SUV it has created in recent years.

The 2020 Audi Q7 Has An Updated Design and New Tech, But Does It Look Worse Than Before?

The 2020 Audi Q7 Has An Updated Design and New Tech, But Does It Look Worse Than Before?

Audi gives current Q7 SUV its mid-lifecycle update to try to keep it looking fresh

People’s opinions of how good Audi cars look are remarkably varied - some think nothing on four wheels looks cooler, while others don’t appreciate their extra chiseled features and massive grilles. The current Audi Q7 SUV was one of the least polarizing models they sold, striking a great balance between being flashy and subdued. Now, however, it’s gone under the knife for the customary facelift and what has resulted from this nip and tuck doesn’t look as good as what went into the operating room in the first place.

2020 Audi S6

Available with two engines for the first time, including a diesel for the European market

The 2020 Audi S6 is the higher performance version of the fifth-generation A6, also known as the C8. Slotted between the regular A6 and the beefed-up RS6, the S6 bridges the gap between comfort and performance. Only slightly sportier than the A6 design-wise, it features a more powerful engine, a sportier chassis setup, and exclusive features that aren’t available with the standard sedan. The 2020 S6 is the first model of its kind to feature two engine options, including a diesel.

Audi dropped the already traditional 4.0-liter V-8 from the lineup and replaced it with the much newer 2.9-liter V-6. But the twin-turbocharged mill is for the U.S. market only. In Europe, the S6 features a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel. But don’t let the oil burner status fool you. This diesel is plenty powerful, and it delivers notably more torque than its gasoline counterpart. Both engines feature a mild hybrid system and permanent Quattro AWD with torque vectoring. Let’s find out more about them in the review below.
