ABT Sportsline always makes some noise at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and this year, you better get ready because the German aftermarket company is prepared to drop the boom.
With a number of programs headed to the biggest auto show of the year, ABT Sportsline is determined to show the gathered masses that it’s one of the best Audi tuners in the world. The GTR program for the R8 GT was actually developed sometime back, but the one that’s going to Geneva is a revised version that features new and exciting modifications.
With every intention of shaving off some weight to make the R8 lighter and faster, ABT Sportsline fitted the German supercar with a new carbon-fiber aero kit that includes a new hood, front and rear aprons, new side skirts and a rear wing. With all these new components in tow, ABT was able to shave 242 pounds off of the R8, no small feat for a car that now weighs just 3,340 pounds. Rounding out the exterior mods include a set of 19-inch forged alloy wheels a new stainless-steel exhaust system, and a coil-over sports suspension with adjustable dampers.
For the engine - the unquestioned highlight of the GTR program - ABT Sportsline did its usual array of magic tricks on the R8’s 5.2-liter FSI engine, increasing the output from 550 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque all the way up to an impressive 620 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque.
With these modifications, the German supercar is now capable of hitting 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.2 seconds - three-tenths of a second faster than the production model. It is capable of hitting a top speed of 202 mph, a significant job from the standard R8’s 193 mph top speed.
For the past three years, Canadian based tuner SR Auto Group has established its Project Phantom program for the Audi R8 as one of its most recognizable projects. And for three years, the aftermarket specialist has taken the task of adding modifications and improvements to the program.
Now that the clock has struck 2013, SR Auto Group’s Project Phantom is making another comeback, only this time it returns with more changes, beginning with a black exterior that takes the place of the phantom black cloak it previously carried. In addition, the program now carries a set of 20-inch PUR 4OUR Black Diamond Monoblock wheels, providing suitable refreshment from the components the program previously carried.
It goes without saying that the Audi R8 is one of those supercars that carries an aura of sporty aggression. The addition to these wheels and subsequent other styling details to the tuning firm’s Project Phantom program gives credence to why the latter has lasted the test of three years’ worth of time.
Shortly after the Audi R8 E-tron became the fastest electric vehicle around the Nürburgring, rumors began floating around that it could be axed. When it was announced that Audi was eliminating the E-tron, the main reason was the high price of the batteries. As no surprise, however, things have changed and new reports suggest that the R8 E-tron will in fact live, but only in limited fashion.
Mark Dahncke, product and motorsports communications manager for Audi of America, said in a recent interview that "the R8 E-Tron project may still be continued in a very small volume of cars that has yet to be decided. What has been decided is that it will not be executed on a large scale production basis."
We don’t know about you, but we think that Audi considering the possibility of the E-tron making production a good decision, as Audi has dumped a ton of money in the research and development process. Unfortunately, if it does happen, the E-tron will only be available in small quantities. We guess a little bit of fun is better than none at all.
When Audi announced the R8 E-tron has been dropped we were pretty disappointed, to say the least. But, to our surprise, it looks like Audi hasn’t entirely dropped the idea of offering a hybrid supercar because new rumors seem to suggest that in the next three years we will see a street-legal version of the German automaker’s very successful LeMans race car, the R18.
The new model will be called the R20 and will be offered with the trademark full-length tailfin of an R18 LeMans racer. In order to help distinguish itself as an Audi model, the R20 will be equipped with a downsized, single-frame grille; stacked LED headlights; ventilated front and rear wings; and an adjustable rear spoiler. The best part is that the next R20 will likewise be offered with gulling doors, which will offer access to a highly equipped interior. It will offer a multi-functional black panel center display, active-contour seats with integrated four-point belts and tons of other technology features.
Under the hood, Audi will combine a 550-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine with two electric motors that will drive the front wheels. The R20 will also be equipped with brake energy recuperation, high-speed coasting, and a broader start-stop application.
The new Audi R20 will be unveiled in 2015 at the Pebble Beach event. Production will begin in the spring of 2016 and there will be only 100-250 units offered.
UPDATE 3/29/2013: Rumor has it that the model once known as the R20 will actually be called the R10. And with a new name comes an all-new rendering based off of design cues from the R8 and the R18 racecar.
VF Engineering is really into breaking the mold when it comes to developing programs for some of the world’s finest supercars. The American aftermarket company definitely knows a power upgrade when they see one and their latest offering for the mighty German beast, the Audi R8 V10, is no different.
With some help from fellow Audi aftermarket wizard Stassis Engineering, VF Engineering took the R8 V10’s massive 5.2-liter engine and made serious work out of it, highlighted by the addition of a bolt on roots style supercharger system and an Eaton/Magnuson TVS2300 four-lobe roots blower with an air/water aftercooling system that boosts up the R8 V10’s output from the standard 520 horsepower and 390 pounds-per-feet of torque figures all the way up to 720 horsepower and 590 pounds-per-feet of torque. That impressive bump in output is particularly jacked up because of the resulting lag-free instant punch of 5psi from as little as 2,000rpm, with the boost gradually climbing all the way up to 6.5psi at redline.
And should the R8 V10 be using a 91 or 93 octane, the stock engine programming is then recalibrated by VF courtesy of an OBD2 port electronic flash.
For all of the program’s downright awesomeness, there is one bit of bad news out there for anybody interested in getting this package. It’s not compliant with the California Air Resourse Board and cannot be used on public roads in California.
At the end of November it was speculated that Audi may unveil a R10 diesel supercar, but we took that with a grain of salt. To our surprise, Audi quattro gmbh boss, Franciscus Van Meel, has confirmed that such a model is indeed under development and he offered new details on it.
According to Van Meel, the new diesel supercar will be completely different than the R8 and will help transfer Audi’s Le Mans-winning race technology to the road. The model will be "the absolute best supercar" and according to Van Meel will be "better than the forthcoming McLaren P1."
He offered no details on the engine, but we expect it to fall be somewhere around 700 horsepower and at least 737 pound-feet of torque. Depending on its weight and aerodynamics, that would give it a 0-to-60 mph sprint time in the 3-second range and top it out in the in the 200 mph range. If realized, these numbers will make the upcoming Audi diesel supercar better than three upcoming monsters: Porsche 918, Ferrari Enzo successor and McLaren P1. With all of that power means that this diesel supercar would likely come in near the €1 million mark.

If you thought the Audi R8 China Edition was rare, then you’ll be shocked to know that there’s a limited-edition model that’s even rarer than that. This is the Audi R8 V10 Limited Edition and, as its name suggests, Audi is only building a select number of these babies — 30 in all — for the Chinese market. To distinguish itself from the rest of the R8s out there, including the aforementioned China Edition, Audi decided to dress up the R8 Limited Edition in a unique Nordic Gold paint finish that, on looks alone, can make a serious case as a permanent color option for the R8.
Aesthetic modifications are also abound for this limited-run model, highlighted by front and rear air intakes and outlets, lightweight tailpipes, and a radiator grille that has been finished in matte black. The dress up continues with the front and rear slats. Additionally, the rear bumper, and the radiator grille surround and bars all sport a matte-titanium-grey finish. The front spoiler, side blades, fixed rear wing and the enlarged diffuser have been upgraded to carbon matte.
Inside, the R8 Limited Edition features sports bucket seats and headlining, both of which have been dressed with black Alcantara with contrasting stitching and piping, and the knee pad now comes in shark skin black with its own contrast stitching. Carbon matte, or at least inlays of it, was also used inside, particularly the A-pillar and the door pulls. To assert the limited-edition nature of this R8, the aluminum gear knob comes with a limited edition number, ranging from 1 to 33 with the numbers 4, 14, and 24 excluded from the list. Why, you ask? The number "4" equates to bad mojo for the Chinese.
Audi China has priced the R8 Limited Edition at 2,628,000 yuan, which is around $420,000 based on current exchange rates, an amount that affluent and passionate Chinese auto enthusiasts won’t have trouble shelling out.
We totally get why automakers from all over the world are suddenly falling over themselves trying to get some love in China. After all, it’s already the world’s largest auto market and the wide diversity of buyers in the country has given automakers of all levels opportunity to establish themselves and gain some footing in the market.
For its offering, Audi decided to build an R8 V10 China Edition specifically for this purpose. The car is limited to only 80 units and comes in a choice of two colors: Malibu Blue Body/Suzuka Grey Sideblades or the inverse Suzuka Grey Body/Malibu Blue Sideblades. Look at the photos and it’s easy to be enamored with the color choices Audi decided to use on the R8 China Edition.
In addition to the color choices, the R8 China Edition also makes prevalent use of ultra-light and high-strength carbon fiber. Both the R8’s body — the carbon matte fixed spoiler — and the interior are decked in carbon fiber, making for a true special edition model that lives up to the “special” designation. Rounding out the modifications for the 80-unit R8 China Edition is a set of 19-inch, high-gloss black wheels in a 5 twin-spoke “Y” design, further stamping the uniqueness and exclusivity of this special-edition supercar.
The interior of the R8 also strengthens its billing as a special edition. It includes the characters “R8 专享” to go with the model number embedded on the aluminum gear lever knob. Notice also that any number with a “4” on it has been removed to "respect the cultural habit of Chinese customers,” as it is considered unlucky – like the number 13 in the U.S., but intensified.
Adding to the supercar’s luxury swag are materials that include shark skin and colored stitching, the handbrake and steering wheel are wrapped in Alcantara, and the instrument shield is finished in carbon matte. Finally, R8 emblems also adorn the interior of the supercar, particularly on the dash and the aluminum door sill trims.
The entire cost of the R8 China Edition hits at 2,628,000 yuan, which is around $420,000 based on current exchange rates.
In the latest episode of "The Downshift" the crew over MotorTrend took a trip to Quattro GmbH, the birthplace of the the RS3, RS4, RS5, RS6 and R8. Since 1983, Audi’s go-fast factory has been taking Audi sedans to the extreme and in 2006 it unveiled the R8, which has quickly become one of the worlds most sought after supercars.
The factory was founded in October 1983 and it is located on a 3,500-square-meter site in Neckarsulm, near Stuttgart, Germany. The factory specializes in producing high-performance Audi cars and components, and its name pays homage to Audi’s original four-wheel-drive, rally-inspired road car: the Audi Quattro.

When Audi unveiled the R8 V12 TDI concept at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, everyone was impressed by its imposing design and hoped that the diesel supercar would find its way into Audi’s lineup. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen and the only V12 TDI model that remains is the Q7 SUV, which is only in the European market.
It looks like the idea isn’t completely off the table yet, as rumors are afloat that Audi is indeed working on a Le Mans-inspired hybrid-diesel supercar that will sit atop its lineup. Audi insiders have suggested that this new model could be called R10 and that it may be offered as a road-going version of the R18 e-Tron quattro.
While no details have been offered on the R10’s diesel engine, one thing is for sure; it won’t be the V-12, as it was deemed too heavy and its 700-plus pound-feet of torque was a little much for Audi’s existing line of transmissions.

It’s no secret that German automaker Audi has had a longstanding relationship with soccer giants Real Madrid. Over the years, the two have celebrated a successful partnership with a variety of joint appearances, brand promotions, and even going so far as Audi supplying the entire team with their chosen set of models.
Recently, another one of these Audi giveaways took place, but the real highlight of the festivities wasn’t so much the photo-ops or the test runs on the race track. Heck, it wasn’t even the cursory "handing over the keys" to the Real Madrid players.
The real star of the show was the unique Audi R8 LMS that was dressed in Real Madrid livery and dubbed the "R8 LMS Real Madrid Edition." The changes on the car’s body is what will immediately catch your attention, in large part because it’s been dressed to show the colors, logos, and even markings of Real Madrid.
The team’s iconic crest is prominently displayed on the hood of the R8 LMS as well as on both sides of the car — just above the side skirts. The team name is also spread across the top portion of the windshield and on both doors. Apparently, as soon as you open the doors of this racecar, Real Madrid’s own club anthem will play in full blast until you start the engine.
Back in May, we announced that Audi was eliminating the traditional rearview mirror from its R18 Le Mans cars, due to its lack of rearward-facing glass. We also made it clear that a lot of additions to new cars come from successful experiences in the racing world. Well, the R18s ended up garnering a 1-2-3 finish in that race.
As expected, with success comes commercialization, and Audi has announced that its upcoming R8 e-tron will boast this digital mirror technology. This system will consist of a 7.7-inch AMOLED screen mounted in the traditional mirror’s spot. The “mirror” uses a rear-mounted camera to send a video feed, giving the driver a slightly wider field of vision than the average rearview mirror.
Here’s the issue though, the NHTSA’s law book still requires a mirror made from reflective glass to be mounted to all passenger cars. The law specifically states “Each passenger car shall have an inside rearview mirror of unit magnification” and it defines a “unit magnification” as “a plane or flat mirror with a reflective surface through which the angular height and width of the image of an object is equal to the angular height and width of the object when viewed directly at the same distance except for flaws that do not exceed normal manufacturing tolerances. For the purposes of this regulation a prismatic day-night adjustment rearview mirror one of whose positions provides unit magnification is considered a unit magnification mirror. ”
The issue is in the verbiage is that the phrase “ a plane or flat mirror with a reflective surface...” eliminates an LED screen, as it is not a reflective surface. Now, the law becomes nullified is the car comes with side-view mirrors that have 49 square-inches of reflective surface and offer a complete view of the rear end of the vehicle. Those mirrors would be huge for this supercar, so we doubt that exemption will be valid.
We’ll have to see exactly how Audi plans to get around this, or if the NHTSA makes adjustments to its laws.
