Audi RS 7 Piloted Driving Concept Sets Record In Spain

Audi RS 7 Piloted Driving Concept Sets Record In Spain

The Audi RS 7 Piloted Driving Concept was first introduced in October 2014 and in short order, it has more than lived up to Audi’s expectations. The autonomous vehicle’s latest claim to fame occurred at the Parcmotor race track in Barcelona where it set a lap time of 2:07.67, adding yet another feather on its cap.

Since its introduction, the RS 7 Piloted Driving Concept has made a habit of accomplishing things that have helped Audi improve its autonomous driving technology. During the hot lap at the Parcmotor, journalists were given a first-hand experience of riding an autonomous car under race conditions. This latest milestone also served as a hugely successful follow up to a similar run back in October 2014 when an RS 7 with the project name “Bobby” successfully completed a lap around the famed Hockenheim circuit in Germany, reaching speeds in excess of 149 mph in the process. In July 2015, the RS 7 also put in some impressive hot laps around the Sonoma Raceway in California.

These test runs are all part of Audi’s overarching plan to offer autonomous driving in its production cars in the future. A lot of automakers are doing something similar so at this point, it really has turned into a race to see which one can translate the tech to its models first. Judging from how far Audi has come since introducing the RS 7 Piloted Driving Concept last year, it does look like the German automaker’s ahead of the curve. The development ground being laid by the driverless sedan is already providing Audi with valuable information and knowledge, including information related to sensor technology, data processing, and stabilization.

The recent test in Barcelona only adds to the wealth of vital information Audi needs to further advancement the technology. Soon enough, we might be seeing the RS 7 Piloted Driving Concept in production guise. Should that day come, we can all look back to the amount of time, resources, and effort Audi put in to make it happen.

Audi A6 TDI Ultra Breaks World Record By Visiting 14 Countries On One Tank

Audi A6 TDI Ultra Breaks World Record By Visiting 14 Countries On One Tank

Audi and the RAC (a U.K.-based automotive services company) have set a new official Guinness World Record by driving a diesel-powered A6 TDI Ultra to 14 different countries on a single tank of gas.

The A6 was unmodified for the journey, exceeding its factory-rated 67 mpg with an impressive average of 75.9 mpg, seeing a total of 1,158.9 miles before requiring a fill-up. The car comes standard with low rolling-resistance tires and a 73-liter (19.28-gallon) fuel tank.

At the helm was auto journalist Andrew Frankel and British racing driver Rebecca Jackson, who collaborated to set the new record in a 28-hour non-stop journey across Europe. The pair started in the Netherlands on June 9th at 9:48 AM (GMT) and ended in Hungary on June 10th at 12:44 PM (GMT), passing through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Serbia in the process. The route was planned by the RAC to avoid things like mountain gradients and congested urban areas.

However, the trip wasn’t without its challenges, with several unplanned detours required due to heavy traffic caused by an accident and a closed tunnel.

Frankel said he was delighted to be part of the effort, and that he hopes the new record will stand for some time to come. However, the challenge was much harder than he expected, requiring a constant attention to the car’s velocity, with max efficiency available at an average speed of 50 mph. “In order to do this you have to be fully aware of what’s going on around you and anticipate what could happen with the traffic ahead,” he said.

For Jackson, the stint was a diversion from her normal gig as a flat-out performance driver, but she thought it was nonetheless something that the RAC and Audi should be proud of. “This was an amazing event and a very different long-distance driving challenge to what I’m doing next year when I compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2016,” she said.

Audi Sets New Lap Record For Cars With Diesel Engines

Audi Sets New Lap Record For Cars With Diesel Engines

Audi has set a new lap record for diesel-powered cars around the German Sachsenring race track. The vehicle used was the 2014 Audi RS 5 TDI competition concept, which managed to complete a run around the 3.6 km (2.2-mile) course in 1 minute 35.35 seconds, besting the previous record by 1.87 seconds. Powering the car was an innovative twin-turbo six-cylinder that gets an additional boost from an electrically driven compressor.

Behind the wheel was professional racer Nicki Thiim, who drove the Audi on its record-breaking run as part of Sachsenring Record Day, an event organized by Michelin and the German magazine Auto Bild Sportscars. The achievement echoes similar success attained earlier in the spring, when the German publication Sport Auto brought the RS 5 concept to Hockenheim and posted the quickest lap in the mag’s history for a diesel-powered car.

Video: Nokian Tyres Sets Ice Speed Record With Audi RS6

Video: Nokian Tyres Sets Ice Speed Record With Audi RS6

Trying to figure out the most impressive land-speed record in the world is an exercise in futility because of the sheer number of them and the circumstances surrounding each of these records.

That being said, there’s still a certain level of respect we have to give for each new world record, including the recent one set by Finnish tire manufacturer Nokian Tyres.

Using a stock Audi RS6, Nokian Tires fitted the sports saloon with its eighth-generation Hakkapeliitta studded winter tires and proceeded to set a new ice-driving speed record with a top speed of 208.6 mph, beating the previous record it also set two years ago when it clocked a top speed of 206.1 mph.

The new record was set by the company’s test driver, Janne Laitinen, over the frozen waters of the Gulf of Bothnia. We’re not going to pretend to know where that is, but the record in itself is pretty impressive, especially when you consider certain rules the tire manufacturer had to adhere to.

It may sound ridiculous, but the ice which the RS6 ran on had to be natural with no chemical treatment done to it, but such are the aforementioned circumstances that makes picking the most impressive land-speed record such a chore.

Whatever the case may be, a big congratulations goes out to Nokian Tyres for breaking its own world record.

Audi R8 e-tron becomes fastest electric vehicle around the Nurburgring

Audi R8 e-tron becomes fastest electric vehicle around the Nurburgring

Even though the Audi R8 e-tron hasn’t officially been launched yet, it is already a world record breaker. With a lap time of 8:09.099 minutes, the R8 e-tron has just become the fastest production vehicle with an electric drive system around the Nurburgring. The car was driven to success by racing driver Markus Winkelhock.

The R8 e-tron is powered by electric motors that deliver an output of 375 HP and a peak torque of 604 lbs-ft. The electric car will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 124 mph (electronically limited). To achieve the record-setting lap, the electronic speed limiter was removed so that the top speed could go up to 155 mph.

"The R8 e-tron has given a magnificent demonstration of its potential on the toughest race track in the world," said Michael Dick, Audi AG Board Member for Technical Development. Dick, who completed a fast lap himself in the R8 e-tron, added: "The record-setting drive confirmed that we are on the right track. To us, electric mobility has never been about sacrifice, but rather is about emotion, sportiness and driving pleasure."

The Audi R8 e-tron will grace the market with its presence by the end of 2012.

Audi RS6 becomes fastest car on ice

Audi RS6 becomes fastest car on ice

In all honesty, people go out of their way on a daily basis to avoid driving through some of the insane driving conditions professional drivers seem to float on. So, really, who in the world cares how fast any vehicle can drive while scooting around on some ice? The answer, dear friends, is anyone who can appreciate the art of driving and the thrill of speeding down a sheet of ice at record-breaking speeds. In other words, Audi. Or so we thought...

Earlier this month, Bentley smashed the world speed record on ice by getting the luxury car up to a scintillating 205.48 mph. Now, an Audi RS6 has taken the record away from Bentley with its speed of 206.05 mph. The new record was set at Gulf of Bothnia in Oulu, Finland and, more importantly, was set not by an automaker wanting to take the reigns from Bentley, but by a tire manufacturer that wanted to prove that their Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded tires were better than the Pirelli SottoZero II tires used on the Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible.

“We wanted to take the record back to us because Bentley used competitor’s tires, and we, of course, could not let that be,” the statement Nokian sent AutoEvolution reads. “As for the car, we just used one of our own high speed test cars (which happened to be an Audi RS6). So, Audi has not taken part in this attempt in any way. Also, there are no separate records for tires, cars or drivers etc, just one "fastest car on ice."

Well played, Nokian. Congratulations on having the best and fastest tires on the block.

World Record: Bio-gas Audi A4 hits 226.55 MPH

World Record: Bio-gas Audi A4 hits 226.55 MPH

Watch out Bugatti, because someone has just has just recorded a land speed record, for an alternatively fueled vehicle. This gas powered Audi A4 sped its way into the pages of the Guinness Book Of World Records with a 225+ MPH run. Under the hood, the four door Audi uses a modified turbocharged 3.0 Liter V6 running on compressed natural gas. An added advantage of the alternative gas is its rating of 120 octane, allowing Hohenester, the tuners which prepared the vehicle, to pile on the boost without worrying about detonation. Although the twin turbo motor makes closer to 800 HP, it was restricted to only 700 ponies for the record setting 226.55 MPH run.

What we want to know is, where to get some CNG for our test fleet.
