This Rendering Proves The Bentley Mulliner Bacalar Should Have Been a Two-Door Coupe
Bentley wowed us all when it flooded the internet with images of the glorious Bacalar, an aggressive two-seater based on the current-generation Continental GTC with design strokes signed by Bentley’s famed coachbuilder Mulliner. Now, we’re getting a peek at how a coupe version might look but you should withstand the urge to throw money in Bentley’s general direction as this is merely an unofficial render.
From the ashes of the canceled 2020 Geneva Auto Show rose many models that were supposedly slated to make their debut in Switzerland and Bentley’s eye-catching Bacalar would’ve surely attracted every and all camera lenses. As it happens, a web reveal is all we got but, alas, we’ve been drooling at the $2 million roadster ever since we laid eyes on it so we do hope Bentley’s short-term plan includes a Bacalar with a fixed roof arching over the heads of the driver and his very special companion sitting in the passenger’s seat.
Big Surprise: Bentley Is Considering An SUV to Replace the Now Defunct Mulsanne Sedan
Last week, we reported on Bentley’s cancellation of the Mulsanne and speculated a bit on what was coming next. In that very article, I speculated that Bentley would have been in hot water if it wasn’t for the Bentayga, and the company would likely build another SUV. Well, folks, I was right. In an interview with Car & Driver, Adrian Hallmark, the big-boss of Bentley, has said that flagship status could be given to a new luxury SUV that will sit above the Bentayga. There’s a twist, though, and you need to know about it.
2021 Bentley Mulliner Bacalar
Add Bentley to the growing list of automakers that have taken the bold step of introducing a roofless speedster in their vehicle portfolio. The British automaker took to the Interwebs to introduce the Mulliner Bacalar, a $2-million open-top sports car that was named after a lake in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, features paint made using rice husk ash, and interior trim that includes wood accents taken from trees that fell way before Jesus was born. The Mulliner Bacalar is a showstopper in every sense of the word. It looks like one. It’s powered like one. Most importantly, it costs like one.
Can the Bentley Continental GT V8 beat the McLaren GT in the quarter mile?
Drag races these days can involve cars that sport different personalities and purposes. These days, you can expect a BMW 7 Series to do battle against the humble Dacia Logan MCV just to see how they fare in the quarter-mile run, or you can have your family EV going against all-out supercars... and win by a landslide.
But do you know what? Not many people drag race luxury cars. We, for one, would like to see how the S-Class compares to the Audi A8 in a straight line, or let’s say, how the Bentley Continental GT stacks up against the McLaren GT. Wait, what? It’s been done?
The Bentley EXP 100 GT Concept Is About to Lose Its Top
If the recent rumors are true, Bentley is looking to capitalize on the stunningly-designed EXP 100 GT Concept by deriving it into a super-exclusive model of the barchetta-style ilk. The open-top sports tourer is in line to receive the carmaker’s W-12 powerplant that’s shared by the likes of Bentayga, Continental GT, and Flying Spur, but it has to qualify for approval first. Once it ticks that box, its development process will fall into the task of Bentley’s Mulliner division - so expect the open-top sports tourer to ooze luxury through every crevice.
You Finally Have a Chance to Own a 1929 Bentley Blower... Kind of
While we were waiting for new debuts at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, Bentley made a surprising announcement at the 2019 Salon Prive Concours d’Elegance in Crewe, England. The British firm launched a continuation series of the iconic Bentley Blower, a car it originally sold back in 1929. Yes, Bentley is doing exactly what Jaguar did with cars like the E-Type Lightweight, D-Type, and XK-SS, but with a much older car. The Blower will thus become the world’s first pre-war race car continuation series.
2020 Bentley Flying Spur
The 2020 Bentley Flying Spur is the third-generation version of the company’s full-size luxury sedan. The third-gen four-door replaces a six-year-old sedan in a segment that’s also contested by the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and the Rolls-Royce Ghost.Heavily inspired by the Continental GT coupe, the 2020 Flying Spur boasts a sportier appearance on the outside, a more modern interior, and a revised W-12 engine.
Built on the same chassis as the Continental GT, the third-generation Flying Spur features a big amount of brand-new, state-of-the-art technology. The sedan is fitted with an active all-wheel-drive system, and it’s also the first Bentley to have four-wheel steering. The revised W-12 engine isn’t notably more powerful than the old unit, but it makes the Flying Spur the quickest sedan in its class and the only one to hit 60 mph in less than four seconds. Only in Russia: A Bentley Continental on Tank Tracks
The Bentley Continental is one of the most luxurious cars on the market today. Surely, if someone’s going to customize the Continental, he’s not going to butcher the luxury sedan and turn it into a Frankensteinian horror show? In what amounts to Russia’s latest “hold my beer” moment, a Russian tuner did precisely what you’d think it would do. Ladies and gentlemen, feast your ideas on the Bentley Continental Tank. Oh, yes, the Continental, one of the most esteemed sedans that money can buy, is now this rancid monstrosity. For a country that has shown tremendous panache in building some of the most unusual — and I say that loosely — custom car creations you’ve ever seen, the Bentley Continental Tank definitely takes the cake.
2018 Bentley Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner
Bentley is turning 100 years old in 2019, and a year ahead of its centenary, the British automaker is getting the party started with the release of a new special edition Mulsanne that pays tribute to its founder, W.O. Bentley. Limited to just 100 units, the Mulsanne W.O. Edition gets plenty of exclusive features, all of which have been added by Bentley’s resident personalization savant, Mulliner.

EV’s and hybrids are all well and good, but sometimes, there’s just no replacement for displacement. The owner of the Packard-Bentley “Mavis” would certainly agree. Break it down, and what you’re dealing with here is basically a Bentley 8 Litre chassis powered by a 42-liter Packard 4M-2500 V-12 engine. Yep, you read that right - 42 friggin’ liters, baby.
Because it was originally intended for use in a WWII-era American PT boat, the engine produces a whopping 1,500 horsepower and 2,000 pound-feet of torque, which, stuffed into a 1930 Bentley chassis is a bit, well, ridiculous. In the best way possible, obviously.
To make it fit, the car’s builder had to move the steering column to an offset angle, while a total of 24 exhaust tips were added to help it spit flames and smoke like some raging hell beast.
While the video doesn’t show the Mavis actually moving, it’s well worth a watch for the gross display of internal combustion (and external combustion, for that matter).
Noted German Tuner Wants To Build A Bentley Mulsanne Coupe
For those who have been reading Top Speed for quite some time now, you’ll know that we’ve been writing about some of the tuning programs created by German tuner McChip. Over the years, it’s created kits for a wide range of cars, including the Mercedes-SLS AMG, the Porsche Panamera, and even the Fiat 500. If diversity were the name of the tuning game, McChip would stand out head and shoulders above the rest. I mention all of this because the German tuner is back in the news, although this time, it’s not for another tuning program. Rather, it’s actually building a car none of us have ever seen before: a Bentley Mulsanne Coupe.
Yes, you read that right. McChip is building a one-off coupe version of the Bentley Mulsanne. It’s something that we’ve been waiting for Bentley to do since the luxury automaker unveiled the Mulsanne all the way back in 2009. It’s never happened so instead of waiting around for something that Bentley will likely never do; the German tuner is taking matters into its own hands, literally. There’s still a lot we don’t know about the build. To be more specific, we know nothing about McChip’s complete strategy for it. The tuner did say though that it’s looking to make extensive use of carbon fiber and create a new aluminum skin for the C-pillars to go with re-engineering specific sections of the Mulsanne’s bodywork. Those are only a few things that the tuner is looking to do on the road to creating the Mulsanne Coupe. It’s unclear how long the build is going to take, but rest assured, the tuner is serious about doing this, as shown by pictures of an actual Mulsanne getting prepped for the proverbial automotive surgery.

2018 Bentley Mulsanne Design Series by Mulliner
At this point, it’s reasonable to expect that whenever Mulliner and Bentley get together, something special is usually in the works. We’ve seen it time and time again, and now we can look forward to seeing two more Bentleys getting the full-scale Mulliner treatment. One of these models is the Bentley Mulsanne, and it’s headed to the Frankfurt Motor Show as the Mulsanne Design Series by Mulliner.
I know what some of you are thinking; another Mulsanne project by Mulliner? Does this ever end? Well, it’s unlikely that it will, but there’s no reason why it should end given the string of incredible projects undertaken by Bentley’s own personalization division. The Frankfurt-bound Mulsanne Design Series by Mulliner follows on the same path with its own set of upgrades and individualized design touches, though it is worth pointing out that as far as this particular example is concerned, there is something that’s, well, lacking. Maybe it’s the fact that we’ve all gotten used to Mulliner’s penchant for stringing along one exceptional program after another, but at some point, there will be a bump in the road, or to be more specific, something that doesn’t quite measure up to the obscenely high standards that Mulliner has created for itself. This is, in a lot of ways, one of the problems with Mulliner. Expectations always call for something exceptional, and yet, what happens when a program falls a tad short of that? Well, see for yourselves.

Bentley Unveils 2018 Continental GT
Bentley just dropped a ton of details on the new 2018 Continental GT ahead of its debut in Frankfurt next month. Now entering its third generation, the Continental GT promises high-end grand tourer speed and comfort, plus unmistakable British style. Outside, the design takes cues from the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept, with lightweight aluminum body panels and longer, lower dimensions. In back, you’ll find reshaped taillights, plus LED Matrix lighting. 21-inch wheels are standard, while 22-inchers are available. Inside is the new Bentley Rotating Display, offering both a 12.3-inch touchscreen and three analog dials. Up to four passengers get to enjoy a “diamond in diamond” design for the leather upholstery, while chrome trim and several acres of wood add extra gloss. A 10-speaker stereo comes as standard, while an 18-speaker system is an available option.
So it’s nice to sit in and look at. What about driving it? Under the muscular hoodline is a 6.0-liter W-12 engine producing 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. Putting it to the ground is a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission and Active AWD system, helping it reach 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and top out at 207 mph. Larger brakes (up to 16.5 inches in front) throw the anchor, while a Dynamic Ride System enhances both handling prowess and passenger comfort as needed. The engine was also moved further back in the chassis for optimized weight distribution. Look for the 2018 Bentley Continental GT to debut next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
2018 Bentley Flying Spur V8 S Black Edition
Fresh off of announcing the Mulliner’s new Design Series for the Flying Spur, Bentley is back at it again with another special edition version of the luxury sedan. It’s called the Flying Spur V8 S Black Edition and it’s essentially a dressed-up version of the sedan that features plenty of dark tints lights and black gloss brightware, among other things.
It’s become a little bit of a tradition for Bentley to offer these special edition models in quick succession, so it’s not a surprise that we’re seeing another so soon after the British automaker released a previous special edition Flying Spur with Mulliner heavily involved in it. No one’s going to confuse these new Black Edition Flying Spurs for Mulliner’s Design Series, and I suppose that’s a good thing. With so many SEs coming out of Crewe these days, being different is a good thing, even if it means getting fewer digs than others. That’s essentially what the Flying Spur V8 S Black Edition is. There’s not much to go by compared to what Bentley has come up with in past months, but there are still enough new features to at least justify it getting the SE label. It’s still a Flying Spur, too, so even if it’s lacking in distinctive upgrades relative to our expectations, there’s still more than enough opulence to go around for everybody.

2018 Bentley Continental GT Convertible Galene Edition by Mulliner
By now, you would think that Mulliner would have done just about every kind of luxury interpretation imaginable. That is at the heart of its job as Bentley’s in-house personalization division. Over the past few years, we’ve seen Mulliner turn Bentleys into works of pure art and opulence. You’d be surprised, though, how creative this group can get, and no more is that in full display than in its latest project, the Continental GT Convertible Galene Edition.
Yes, Mulliner just finished another limited edition build for Bentley. Yes, it looks amazing. Yes, it takes its name from the Greek goddess of calm seas. And yes, it’s nautically-inspired, right down to the whole treatment in the exterior and interior of the convertible. It says a lot about the Continental GT Convertible Galene’s status as a decadent limited edition that even Princess Yachts, the creators of some of the most expensive yachts in the world, got involved in the project with Mulliner. The styling cues in the exterior and interior are indicative of what Princess Yachts does with its own expensive products, and you can tell by how the whole model turns out that it’s a Bentley that’s ideally suited for a specific clientele. Only 30 units of the Continental GT Convertible Galene Edition will be built, too. That’s hardly a surprise considering the people behind its creation. Luxury begets luxury, and the Continental GT Convertible Galene Edition is a physical embodiment of that.

2017 Bentley Mulsanne by Mansory
You’d be hard-pressed to find a tuner that has embraced the outlandish more times than Mansory. Run down its catalog of past of works and they’re all there for you to see. There are the Siracusa kits for the Ferraris, the Carbonado kits for the Lamborghinis, and while I’m at it, remember the Bentley Continental Vitesse Rose from 2009? Yikes. As colorful as Mansory’s tuning history is, we can all agree that it makes the kind of statements that very few of its peers in the tuning game are able to do. Which is why it is a bit disappointing to find out that its latest program – one for the Bentley Mulsanne – came with a headline that begins with “subtle modifications.”
The words “Mansory” and “subtle” should be mentioned in the same sentence about as often as the words “Reliant Robin” and “reliable” are. And yet, here we are, presenting a Mansory program for Bentley’s luxury limousine that doesn’t quite feel like something that the German tuner worked on its tuning laboratory. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of fancy carbon fiber bits and pieces here and there. It even has a notable power upgrade, which is rare in the aftermarket scene for a car as massive as the Mulsanne. But since this is Mansory we’re talking about, there’s a level of audacious expectation that has to be met, one that I this program wasn’t able to reach. I don’t think it’s a sign that the tuner is slowing down on the imagination aspect of the game, so it does make me wonder if this is Mansory’s way of showing a side of itself that we rarely get to see.

2019 Bentley Mulsanne Convertible
Launched in 2010, the current Bentley Mulsanne replaced the dated Arnage in the company’s lineup and revived a nameplate the brand previously used between 1980 and 1992. At 5,575 mm (219.5 inches) in length, the Mulsanne is currently Bentley’s largest sedan, sitting above the Flying Spur. The most interesting fact about the Mulsanne is that it received a styling language of its own, being the only Bentley that’s not based on the Continental. Updated in 2013, the full-size sedan spawned several special edition models, as well as a performance-oriented Speed model.
Scheduled to remain on sale for at least three more years, the Mulsanne could soon receive a two-door convertible version. Such a model has been in the rumor mill since 2012 and gained more traction in 2014 when the Brits showcased the Grand Convertible concept. The much-anticipated production model was canceled in 2015 when Wolfgang Durheimer was replaced by Wolfgang Schreiber as Bentley CEO, but now that the former has return to the helm of the brand, the Mulsanne cabriolet is back on the drawing board.
Bentley has yet to make an official statement about it, but Durheimer recently told CarAndDriver that the Grand Convertible concept could be turned into a production car in Mulliner’s workshop. The luxury drop-top would be built in a limited batch and sold with a huge sticker compared to the sedan. Should that happen, Bentley will offer its first full-size convertible since the 2009, when the Arnage-based Azure was discontinued.
There’s no specific timetable for the Mulsanne convertible, but this gives us just enough time to take guesses upon what it may bring to the table. We also created a rendering to go with our speculative review below. Check it out and stay tuned for updates.

2017 Bentley Continental GT Speed Black Edition
In March 2016, Bentley launched the Continental GT Black Speed special edition for the Australian market. Essentially a follow-up for the GT Concours, which features blacked-out chrome, the Black Speed was created with help from the bespoke Mulliner division and features a black exterior with red highlights inspired by the "Monster By Mulliner" concept revealed at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show. Only a few weeks have passed since the Black Speed was announced and Bentley has launched yet another special-edition using the "Black" moniker, this time based on the range-topping GT Speed.
Unlike the Australian-only version, the GT Speed Black Edition is available for both European and U.S. customers, can be had in both coupe and convertible body styles, and in more than just one exterior color. More importantly, it features the drivetrain update the standard GT Speed just received for the 2017 model year, consisting of extra horsepower and torque, and a quicker 0-to-60 mph sprint.
Bentley says that the Black Edition was developed to "meet demand from customers for a model in the Continental line that offers both increased sporting capabilities and instantly recognizable styling cues." In other words, the Black Edition offers the stout performance of the GT Speed, but the subtle looks that other Bentleys, known for their hefty amount of chrome, can’t deliver.
Deliveries for the GT Speed Black Edition begin in the summer of 2016 in both Europe and the United States.

2017 Bentley Mulsanne First Edition
At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the Bentley Mulsanne finally received its mid-cycle facelift after more than five years in production. The update brought a new front grille and bumper, revised headlamps, new B-shaped wings on the front fenders, and new taillights on the outside, along with new wood veneers and a new infotainment system on the inside. The same upgrade was transferred onto the Speed model and the longer, Extended Wheelbase version. At the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, Bentley unveiled the First Edition, a limited-edition package that makes the Mulsanne a more exclusive vehicle.
Available for all three models, the First Edition is mostly about interior add-ons and does very little to change the sedan’s appearance. However, the interior comes with new features such as a luxury silver vanity kit and rare wood veneer, which are more than enough to turn the standard Mulsanne into a bespoke Mulliner vehicle. Bentley plans to build only 50 examples of the First Edition across the new three-model family. Not exactly a lot compared to other mainstream manufacturers, but it’s quite a lot judging by the numerous luxury features and the expensive sticker these sedans are expected to carry.
Bentley had nothing to say about pricing, but if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it.
