Next generation BMW 3-Series rendered

Those guys over at BMW are just barely done exhibiting their talents with the 5 Series and the facelifted 3-Series Coupe and Convertible and they already working on the next generation 3 Series. It will be revealed in the next few months and will go on sale in early 2011. They sure aren’t wasting any time.

Like many of their latest models, the 2012 3-Series will take its design inspiration from the 2007 CS Concept. It will remain a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive model with a new 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and 1.5-liter three-cylinder unit under the hood. Both units will deliver around 150 HP. All models will be offered with l EfficientDynamics – including stop-start and energy recuperation.

The car’s interior is said to model that of the 5 series, but will also feature a tremendoues achievement. The next-generation 3 Series will have Wi-Fi in its lineup which we hope BMW will be readily able to explain once the car gets closer to production.

As for the exterior, BMW seems to be sticking to its classic design while adding a wider body to differentiate it from its earlier models. We aren’t really sure if BMW fans will go for the newer model if it tends to look just like the models from before and cost more. Of course, they will be highly intrigued with the electronical adjustments made. Let’s just hope when the actual vehicle comes out, it will look a little prettier than this rendering.

Chrome'd up BMW 328 too fancy for our liking

Chrome’d up BMW 328 too fancy for our liking

It’s not as ghastly as the Corvette from Hell we showed you a few days ago – some people even dig the whole body chrome treatment, though we’re not one of them – but the owner of this BMW 328i really went through the proverbial needle’s eye to make his car look as – for better or worse – as attention-grabbing as it can get.

We’re big fans of chrome detailing if done correctly. As far as we’re concerned, this one isn’t one of them. Maybe it’s the overall package of the car or maybe it’s just those tacky white outlines that makes it look more like a toy car than anything else; either way we’re not big fans of how this customized 328 turned out.

What do you guys think?

We’d spoil you the result of the race but where’s the suspense in that? But just so you won’t get caught off-guard, we’ll give you a little teaser of what to expect – or not to expect, for that matter.

It’s not the kind of drag race you’re accustomed to seeing.

BMW 3-Series Coupe takes a plunge on a cliff; driver and passenger escapes unhurt

You know how action movies almost always has to have a car chase scene where a car spectacularly flies over a cliff before crashing down into a ball of flame.

This accident involving a BMW 3-Series Coupe didn’t have the theatrics of Hollywood, but it still was eye-popping enough to catch our attention.

According to the driver of the 3-Series who lived to tell the story of his cliff-plunging ordeal, he was driving along the Angeles Crest Highway in
California with a female friend when a group of animals caught him off-guard, causing him to swerve his 3-Series straight into the edge of the cliff where it flew straight off before tumbling down the mountain in a heap.

Remarkably, both the driver and his female companion escaped the cliff-flying episode without any serious injuries, although both of them know how incredibly fortunate they are to have all their appendages intact after such a terrible crash.

Video: 2012 BMW 3-Series caught testing in Europe

The 2012 BMW 3-Series is still a long ways away from seeing the production line but that doesn’t that mean it’s exempt from the curious sort’s prying eyes.

This latest spy video of the new 3-Series was captured after the car took a pit stop at a gas station somewhere in Europe. From what we gather, the 2012 3-Series – in all its swirly-camouflaged glory – was undergoing winter testing too see how the car reacts in sub-zero temperatures.

As you can imagine, the swirls didn’t do a whole lot in showing the aesthetic design of the new 3-Series and the white snowy background doesn’t help either but at least we finally have visual evidence that the new 3-Series is in fact, on its way.

AC Schnitzer BMW 335d becomes the fastest street legal diesel at the Nardo Ring, w/ video

AC Schnitzer BMW 335d becomes the fastest street legal diesel at the Nardo Ring, w/ video

Top speed records are worth their weight in gold in tuner car circles where bragging is expected and actually being able to back up these claims is less often the norm. The German modification house AC Schnitzer has just attained one of those coveted titles just the other day with a customized BMW 335d. Yes that’s right, d stands for diesel, making the alternatively fueled ACS3 Series the fastest street legal diesel in the world. The location for the record setting event was the infamous Nardo test ring in Italy, a 7.8 long circle with just enough banking to let the driver keep the wheel as straight as possible at over 200 MPH on a closed course.

In this case it was the editors of AUTO BILD who piloted the Continental tire shod AC Schnitzer modified BMW 335d, a car that gets 36 MPG on the highway from the factory along with the fun of a 265 HP twin turbocharged inline six cylinder engine to a top speed of 288.7 km/h, or 179.3 MPH in American. The 335d used the German tuners simple and straightforward performance packages that boost torque to a whopping 405 lb-ft and drops the diesel powered sports coupe’s 0 to 60 MPH time by a full half second taking it down to a very sporty 6.1 seconds.

The power mods consist of a reprogrammed computer module to increase turbo pressure and add a bit more fuel to the mix while a stylish twin tip exhaust pokes out from either side of the rear bumper and give the green BMW a more aggressive groan. Although 180 MPH may not sound that impressive along side 250 MPH machines like the Bugatti Veyron and Ultima SSC, it is reassuring to see that there is an interest in diesel performance. Now if only Audi would produce the R8 TDI super car this record would easily be theirs without any help from the aftermarket.

BMW E90 3-Series gets buried in snow

BMW E90 3-Series gets buried in snow

When things are going bad, it couldn’t possibly get any worse, right?
Try telling it to this guy.

After having his BMW 3-Series E90 become the victim of an attempted burglary where the driver side window was smashed, the owner was on his way to have it fixed when a blizzard suddenly struck, leaving him stuck at home. So he called a tow truck to help him but due to the terrible conditions of the winter storm, the tow truck never came and his E90 was left outside to endure the wrath of Mother Nature.

Needless to say, the car ended up getting buried under a massive pile of snow and because his window was broken, the snow ended up inside his car, freezing the interior in the process.

It took eight of his friends to dig out the buried E90 but not before the damage had been done. Snow may be fun for a lot of people, but when it’s of this quantity, it becomes a headache for a lot of people and this poor guy from Canada – and his BMW 3-Series E90 - had to bear witness to all of it.

BMW 335i Convertible by ATT

BMW 335i Convertible by ATT

When asking a BMW enthusiast which is their favorite model, they will almost undoubtedly tell you that the mighty M3 shines above the rest, especially when you let it loose on a race track. That is fine and good, however the reality of the fact is that a very small percentage of sports car owners will be wringing their heigh revving V8s out on the track or hanging the tail out with their M mode dynamic control enabled; instead most owners will spend hours on end in traffic waiting for the rare opportunity to crack open the throttle and do a little stop light drag racing. That is where the low end torque of a turbocharged engine comes into play, and there is no better example on the market today than the one found under the hood of a BMW 335i.

The only problem is that after a while you can become accustomed to the rush of the turbo and and the standard car’s 300 HP 3.0 Liter twin turbocharged straight six. However when that happens, instead of trading in your drop top Bimmer for an M3, you can look towards the after market where companies like the German tuner ATT is offering a multi stage power package that will raise your 3 Series output up to 345 HP and 355 lb-ft of torque, or if you are brave enough Power Level II boost the BMW to 362 HP and 388 lb-ft of thrust. Aside from the computer tuning, ATT is also offering a stainless steel exhaust, multi spoke 20 inch aluminum wheels and even a pair of M3 look alike fender vents complete with LED blinkers and all. So now there is absolutely no excuse to pay more for an M3.

Spy video of next generation BMW 3-Series doing some test runs in Germany

BMW’s next generation 3-Series has already taken to the road for some testing, as evidenced by a recent video shot of the car galloping around the streets of Germany in the traditional black and white camouflage. While details of the car are still sketchy, there have been reports that BMW is set to introduce a new line of inline six-cylinder engines for the brand’s new 3-Series.

The video of the 3-Series’ outdoor test run has raised some questions as to when the car will be launched. Knowing that BMW has a standard seven-year cycle with their models, 2012 should be the year when the new 3-Series is officially launched, although we wouldn’t be surprised if we see the car come out sooner than expected.

BMW 3-Series Coupe cosmetic change: Can you See The Difference

With the E92 starting to hit puberty it is time for an update. BMW has traditionally done mid-lifecycle updates in the form of restyled headlamps and taillights as well as different front/rear clips. Relatively minor stuff, but in some instances it can change the whole character of a vehicle.

For instance, on E46 coupes when the headlights were given a more streamlined look, it took away the angry glare that was presented when the model first debuted.

A featured item at Bimmerpost shows slightly modified headlights that evoke a 7-Series like look. In addition, a chrome strip, reminiscent of a 3-Series sedan front valence, is mimicked. These minor modifications present the 3 coupe in a more elegant fashion.

Is this a better design direction for the E92 or should BMW draw up some meaner and more aggressive? Let us know!

Sometimes it’s the little details that count.

New details about the 2012 3-Series

The English automotive journal, AutoCar has gotten their hands on a few more details about the future BMW 3-Series. The 2012 model is expected to be unveiled at the 2011 Paris Motor Show, and according to a source at BMW, the German automaker will offer class-leading aerodynamics, as well as pioneering the use of three-cylinder engines in the company’s full size premium vehicles.

The engine lineup will include a choice of turbocharged three-cylinder gas and diesel engines. Starting off with a 1.5 Liter diesel engine that will deliver around 150 HP, while the gas burning version will deliver 150 HP and 170 lb-ft of torque. One thing that is for certain is that all of the engines will be offered with BMW’s Efficient Dynamics fuel-saving technology. The car will remain a front-engined, rear-drive model, but will use some sort of hybrid electric assist coupled to the rear axle, meaning it will be able to operate in both hybrid and fully electric vehicle modes.

The engines will be mated to a standard 8-speed automatic gearbox first seen in the 7 Series, while the performance models will be offered with 7-speed DCT. BMW has also announced that the 2012 BMW 3-Series will move through the air with exceptional aerodynamics, the car’s coefficient of drag will measure only 0.24 thanks in part to something called an Air Curtain.

BMW 3-series facelift spy shots

The German automaker BMW is planning to bring a slightly restyled 3-Series to the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but we can give you an idea of what it looks like today. The new BMW 3-Series was spotted parked on the side of the side of the road before its official debut with no camouflage, aside from the piece of tape covering the blue and white propeller on the hood, but that’s not fooling anyone. Apparently both the coupe and convertible version will come with subtle restyling as well as a few engine improvements.

From the photo we can see that the new 3-Series will come with a new headlight design with a few LEDs inside, a modified front bumper with a more aggressive lower lip and reportedly a new rear bumper. On the inside the BMW design team will offer revised iDrive controller, which will feature accessory buttons placed around the rotary knob to facilitate use.

The lineup of piston pumping straight six cylinder engines remains the same. BMW will continue to offer four different gas burning units and four diesels around the world, however they will all get a few more miles to the gallon.

BMW 3-Series GT rendering

BMW 3-Series GT rendering

The Bavarian automaker BMW has made quite a name for themselves in recent years by inventing previously unknown segments of the new car marketplace. It all started with a brilliant show of marketing when the automaker came up with a replacement for the taboo Sport Utility Vehicle market with the BMW X6 Sports Activity Vehicle. More recently, instead of going the crossover route, BMW has reintroduced the more spacious automobile combining the practicality of a wagon and the spirit of a sports car with their Gran Turismo line of vehicles. That family is growing with the upcoming GT variant of the entry level BMW 3 Series GT and this rendering has just hit the internet, giving a cue as to what the future Bimmer will look like and get this, the marketing team has come up with another catchy acronym to describe the vehicle; Progressively Active Coupe.

Although the 3 Series GT is set to be unveiled sometime in 2011 the most recent rumors are suggesting that a full sized concept will make an appearance as early as the Frankfurt Motor Show. The GT will slot in nicely between the ever popular 3 Series sedan and utilitarian wagon. The 3 Series GT will cater to new car buyers looking in the smaller vehicle segment and will share some personalization features like the optional bench or individual seating for the rear passengers. Under the hood BMW will use the latest turbocharged six cylinder gas as well as diesel motors and a few additional petrol and alternatively fueled turbo four bangers.

Sized somewhere between an SUV and an avant, the future BMW GT will be 15 inches longer than the standard model and offer the added bonus of more headroom due to the shooting brake layout. The four-door coupe designed body will combine a set of raised, sliding rear seats with a high lifting tailgate that should make accessing the larger cargo area very trouble-free. The design will be inspired by both the CS Concept and the 5-Series GT.

The 3 Series GT will have a unique two-stage tailgate, giving owners the option of opening just a small part of the trunk or the complete tailgate (including the rear window) if more space is desired. The vehicle will be offered in both four and five seater versions, and under the hood BMW will incorporate a wide range of turbo and diesel engines.

2012 BMW 3-Series - new details revealed

The German automaker has already began working on the next generation BMW 3-Series model that is set to be released sometime in 2012. Aside from the regular body styles, the big news is that the next 3-Series will also be available as a GT. This more spacious vehicle will be slated into the lineup below the 5 Series GT and just above the upcoming 1-Series GT.

The exterior of the entry level GT will be inspired by both the BMW X6 as well as the all new 7-Series. The front end will receive a wider grill while the rear will feature a larger version of the classic L shaped taillights. Both the coupe and convertible will feature designs unique from the traditional sedan and station wagon, thanks to some reshaped lighting and some sculpted body work. The new GT will be less of a niche vehicle than the BMW 5-Series GT and will offer a sporty alternative to the BMW X3 CUV.

The luxury automaker will also incorporate the very latest in Efficient Dynamic Technology; for the fuel conscious there will be an active hybrid model powered by a range extending 3 cylinder engine combined with an electric motor as well as a set of low rolling resistance tires. Even the wheels will be aerodynamically designed so that they do not create excessive drag. Like the hybrid 2010 Toyota Prius, BMW will incorporate a solar panel on the roof to power interior accessories causing less of a drain on the battery. It looks like if you enjoyed the current 3-Series, you will love the next generation model because BMW is now offering something for everyone.

Specific design modifications, a further refined interior design, the new generation of the optional operating concept BMW iDrive, new services provided by BMW ConnectedDrive, a revised range of engines and innovations in the areas of drive technology, safety and comfort make both the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and the new BMW 3 Series Touring more attractive than ever before.

The new BMW 330d accelerates in 6.1 seconds from zero to 60 mph, its maxi-mum speed is electronically cut off at 155 mph.

Each of the ten engine types thus has a more favourable relationship between driving dynamics and economy as compared to competitor vehicles of similar output.

BMW Alpina D3 launched in the UK

BMW tuners ALPINA have created a very likely sedan successor to their acclaimed D3 Bi-turbo coupe. Aside from the typical interior and exterior treatments from the luxury tuners, ALPINA begins the process by removing the turbocharged four cylinder engine from a BMW 123d and transplants it into a full size 3 series sedan. The 2.0 liter engine is then tweaked to produce a maximum output of 214 HP, generating more horsepower per liter than any other ALPINA road car. The vehicle can accelerate to 60 MPH (100 km/h) in only 6.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 152 MPH, while returning around 50 MPG.

2012 BMW 3-Series rendering

The current BMW 3-Series has been around since 2005. While that doesn’t make it ancient, the facelift it got this year signals that it’s about time to start wondering what its replacement is going to look like. 2012 is about the time we should see the sixth generation of BMW’s bread-n-butter car break cover, and the folks over at the Swedish site Tekniken Svarld have used the CS concept to come up with an idea about what it may look like.

This rendering uses harder and flatter edges than the current car, which gives that appearance of a much larger vehicle. This size problem could also just be related giving it the shrinky-dink treatment to a car built to have the same footprint as a 7-Series.

Although design may be debatable, we can be pretty confident that BMW will make heavy use of its eco-friendly technology called EfficientDynamics. This could also possibly include dropping some cylinders on engines in favor of turbocharging.

BMW plans new model based on the 3-Series?

BMW plans new model based on the 3-Series?

BMW plans to build new build new models to help it offset falling sales in its traditional segments. The car will be launched after the 2009 Progressive Activity Sedan and will be a derivation of the next 3 series.

"We are investigating whether we can successfully occupy more niches across all existing model lines," a company spokesman said.

A 3-series offshoot could allow BMW’s Munich factory to operate more profitably. Due to falling demand in conventional segments, it will be hard for the company to utilize all of the plant’s daily capacity of 1,000 vehicles with just the sedan and touring models now built there.

Plant manager Manfred Erlacher says he is prepared for another model. "If this were to involve a derivation of the four- or five-door three series, we can change production over to another model within three months," he said.

A similar strategy also is being planned for the new 5 series.

BMW 320i might come to USA - the return of four cylinders

BMW 320i might come to USA - the return of four cylinders

Big engines are not the future, and the fuel prices are proving this. After announcing that the 335d will make its way to the US market, BMW also announced there will also be a four-cylinder gasoline engine for the latest 3 Series. In Europe, the 167 hp 320i is a best seller, and the company hopes it will have the same "desirable effect" in the U.S.

BMW has a long history of four-cylinder engines. In fact, its headquarters in Munich, Germany was built in the shape of four cylinders. Which makes it almost ironic that BMW has not sold a car with a four-cylinder engine in the U.S. (one of its largest markets) in many years.

Bavarian Man torches BMW opposing gas prices

Bavarian Man torches BMW opposing gas prices

Looming gas prices have prevented us from buying SUV’s or cars with big engines. Leave alone individuals, manufacturers are facing the heat with biggies like BMW and supercar weaver Ferrari, announcing their disinterest in releasing future models with bigger engines. A few days back, Mercedes-Benz in a shocking statement, said it will pull the plug and all of its cars manufactured from 2015 onwards will part ways once in for all with petrol stations retailing diesel and gasoline fuels.

Gas prices have shot up worldwide and tormented by the prevailing situation, an unemployed man in Germany torched his BMW in a public place.

The 30 year old man, whose name was withheld as no charges were filed against him, drove his 1995 BMW 3-Series in the morning hours to Frankfurt’s Convention center grounds, jumped out and torched the fuel-drenched car.
He justified his act by expressing that he couldn’t anymore afford the $9.40 per gallon of gas.

By the time the fire fighters arrived at the scene, the car had been charred completely. He might have been right according to his own self, but the law isn’t happy with this insane stunt in a public place. He could end up busting more of his bank balance paying the penalty or could find himself behind bars for violating German environmental laws if he was to be found guilty.

As always, we’ll keep a close track on the twists and turns set to happen in this interesting case.
