BMW->ke178 is no stranger to special-edition versions of its cars, but customers in Abu Dhabi are getting an extra special treat. As a special collection of various BMW Individual options, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Pearl Edition is an exquisite showcase of how much customization that is available for the right price. Better yet, with the 6 Series Gran Coupe having been on the market for a few years now, BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Pearl Edition is a good way to potentially keep this vehicle fresh in the growing segment of “four-door coupes.”

The key element of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Pearl Edition is its expensive Pure Metal Silver paint job. Introduced late last year on the BMW M5, this chrome-effect color contains aluminum flakes within the water-based paint, and it goes through a special paint process (different than all other paint jobs) to ensure protection. The paint material alone is 40 times more expensive than conventional paint, and when combined with the added work that goes into applying the hue, the end result is a paint option north of $10,000. If you’re looking for a unique color that is deep and brilliant, this is your car.

Pros
Cons

Exterior

Pictures surely don’t do this car any justice, but judging by the description of the Pure Metal Silver paint, I bet this car looks like it was carved from a solid piece of aluminum. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Pearl Edition also has other subtle differences to set it apart from “lesser” 650i models. Again, these primarily consist of BMW Individual features like the carbon-fiber rear spoiler, but it also adds a little extra distinction by sporting the front fascia from the Alpina B6 Gran Coupe (it even keeps the Alpina lettering). One interesting aspect of this model is the V-spoke wheels, which don’t appear to be available on the current 6 Series Gran Coupe.

Interior

Inside, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Pearl Edition continues to highlight the BMW Individual collection with high-end Merino leather in Amaro Brown (normally a $3,500 option) accented by what appears to be the Dark Red Sycamore wood trim (adding an extra $1,080). This car also gets features not available on other 6 Series Gran Coupe models, such as the M steering wheel with exclusive two-tone leather and the door sills signifying the “Pearl” edition.

Drivetrain

The particular BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Pearl Edition revealed this year was based on the 650i xDrive Gran Coupe, but there is no word if the setup would be available on a lesser 640i. The BMW 650i Gran Coupe features a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 that produces 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Despite the added weight of the all-wheel-drive system, the improved traction gives the 650i xDrive Gran Coupe the best acceleration of the lineup (except for the M6) with a 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds.

Prices

BMW Abu Dhabi has not announced pricing for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Pearl Edition, but for comparison, the 650i xDrive Gran Coupe starts at $93,100 here in the U.S. Factor in all of the unique elements and BMW Individual options (including the $10,000 paint job), and this car could very easily spec out at well over $120,000.

Competition

Porsche Panamera

Even more than BMW, Porsche->ke1 is known for its ability to cater to the needs of any customer. This means that the Porsche Panamera->ke1840 can be decked out with just about any features and colors imaginable through the Porsche Exclusive program. Even without added individuality, the Panamera might be one of the broadest luxury sedan lineups, ranging from the base Panamera V-6 starting at $78,100 up to the limited-production Panamera Exclusive Series starting at $263,900.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class

The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class->ke539 was the originator of this style-driven segment, and like the BMW Individual, Mercedes->ke187 customers can add unique touches to their CLS-Class with the Designo collection. Even in the comparable CLS550 guise, the CLS-Class starts at $73,200, which is considerably less than the base price of a 650i Gran Coupe.

Conclusion

It’s hard to say if this is a one-off creation or if BMW will offer a limited number of these 6 Series Gran Coupe Pearl Edition models in Abu Dhabi, but either way, whoever drives this car will definitely stand out from the crowd.
