After officially hitting public roads in 2008, the X6 was succeeded the following year by an M version from BMW’s performance tuning arm. Mixing the high stance and exterior dimensions of an SUV with the racer intent of a sports car, the X6 M flaunts its mass in the face of physics, relying on an enormous amount of power and clever suspension design to render obsolete any preconceptions of what a vehicle this size should be capable of.

Now, BMW M GmbH is offering original accessories for the customization of the exterior and interior, adding even more flair to the X6 M.

When it comes to Bimmer personalization, the aftermarket support is positively gargantuan, but these official products from BMW promise not only exacting fit and finish, but the preservation of the original factory warranty as well. BMW says the parts will even increase the car’s resale value. If you’re looking for a way to make your X6 M stand out from the crowd of fast SUVs, M Performance thinks it has the answer.

One look at a stock X6 M is all you need to realize this isn’t your average family SUV. Up front, there are enlarged air intakes and vents, with the traditional BMW kidney grille flanked by big headlights and dotted by twin fog lamps. Moving to the side, you find spectacularly big 20-inch wheels wrapped by a slim covering of high-performance rubber. The roofline is sloped back into the rear end, an effect intended to mimic that of a coupe. The fenders are flared, while a quad exhaust and trailing trunk lip spoiler finish the look.

It’s a package that eschews the traditional boxy SUV look with swoops and aero effects, obviously trying very hard to be a sports car. The M Performance Parts accentuate this feeling with a variety of new additions. First, exclusive radiator and side grille ornamental trim spruce up the kidney grille by replacing the stock chrome pieces with blacks slats, a black frame, and an M logo that announces what waits behind the hood. Customers may also option in handmade carbon exterior mirror caps that give the appearance of weight savings, even though the vehicle still weighs two and a half tons. Every little bit helps, I guess.

Heightening the look of the paint are signature BMW Motor Sport stripes, in the customary three M colors as homage to the brand’s racing heritage. These begin in the front air dam, pop up along the bottom of the doors, and end along the rear bumper, feeding into the quad exhaust tips. Finally, the rear fins can come painted in a high-gloss black. BMW claims these units will help improve the vehicle’s brick-shaped aerodynamics.

Note: model shown is not equipped with M Performance Parts.
In stock form, the X6 M offers a variety of high-quality materials and superior equipment in the cabin. Merino leather covers most things, and there’s an Alcantara anthracite headliner. Aluminum and Nappa leather are outfitted to the door panels and dash, with more aluminum to be found in the center control console. There’s a four-zone climate control, Harman Kardon sound system, central graphics display with navigation, and smartphone connectivity, while an M Laptimer that syncs to the iDrive system and optional heads-up display helps you keep track of things.

Once again, the M Performance parts add to this with a focus on creating an aesthetic with even more motorsport-oriented panache. This includes LED doorsill plates in a brushed stainless-steel look that shine the beacon “M” as soon as you enter the cabin. These sills are battery operated, which makes for easy installation without requiring any extra cables. As expected, composite materials abound, with carbon-fiber accessories including new interior trim bearing the BMW M logo on the gearbox selector. The center console trim also receives carbon fiber, with Alcantara around the selector lever.

Ergonomics are enhanced thanks to the M Performance steering wheel, once again finished in Alcantara and carbon-fiber trim. BMW says this unit is “extremely grippy even in extreme driving situations." The wheel sports a blue center marker at the top to indicate steering position. BMW M Performance stainless-steel pedal covers further complement the motorsports feeling.

A performance key case in Alcantara and carbon fiber is accentuated with M Light Blue and comes with a high-quality blue hex bolt. Finally, easy-care BMW M Performance floor mats with the traditional M Performance lettering are fitted into the foot wells.

As is tradition with packages such as these, the drivetrain remains completely untouched. However, the X6 M was already packing quite a wallop, with a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 laying down 567 horsepower between 6,000 rpm and 6,500 rpm, not to mention 553 pound-feet of torque between 2,200 rpm and 5,000 rpm. BMW uses something called a hot-V design, which moves the double snails into the cross-bank exhaust manifolds, reducing the total package size as well as diminishing overall turbo lag.

An eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic puts the power down to all four wheels through BMW’s signature xDrive AWD system. 0-to-60 mph happens in four seconds flat, with 155 mph designated as the top speed (that figure is raised to 173 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package).

But making something this heavy go fast in a straight line isn’t really all that impressive. Making that mass change direction, however, is a different story altogether. Holding the body low and controlled over those massive wheels, you’ll find a huge number of driver’s assistance electronics and gadgets keeping it all neat and tidy. These include stability control, anti-lock braking, cornering brake control, dynamic brake control, an electronic differential lock, dry braking function, fading compensation, dynamic performance control, and adaptive drive. This is on top of the various dynamic damper controls, which include three settings for comfort, sport, or sport+.

Pricing for the X6 M starts at $103,050, while the M Performance Parts are available from dealers for an undisclosed amount of money. If I were to float an educated guess, however, I’d venture that an X6 M with all the above listed M performance doodads fitted would probably run an extra five to seven thousand dollars, give or take. That, of course, does not including installation.

I have a problem with packages like these. While the above-mentioned options are called M Performance Parts, the only real performance added is fantasy. In stock form, the X6 M is monstrously quick for a vehicle of its size. If BMW wants to make it even faster, then by all means – add power with an exhaust and retune, add grip with revised suspension parts. They could even shave a few pounds off the curb weight and I’d be satisfied with a designation as a performance part.

However, as it stands, all I see is the promise of more speed, but without the delivery. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a smart move on the part of BMW – anyone spending six figures on a 5,000-pound performance SUV is sure to love stuff like racing stripes and a performance key case. That’s just par for the course in this crowd, right?

Nonetheless, I maintain that what we have here is a misnomer. But I get it. Performance-look Parts just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

  • Leave it
    • No actual performance added
    • Carbon fiber trim on a car this heavy is kind of silly

Attractive BMW M Performance Parts for the exterior.
Among the features included in the range to accentuate the sporting appearance of the BMW X5 M and X6 M are exclusive radiator and side grille ornamental trim with black slats, black frame and M logo imparting the distinctive BMW M Performance look. The standard chrome grilles can be effortlessly swapped for the corresponding BMW M Performance Parts. Customers can also specify their car with high-quality, handmade carbon exterior mirror caps, which add an extra sporting accent to the exterior of both the BMW X5 M and X6 M. Motor sport stripes in the three signature M colours provide a direct and conspicuous link to the brand’s racing heritage and signal the cars’ sporting character from a distance. The BMW X6 M, meanwhile, can also be ordered with rear fins in high-gloss black, which not only lend it a particularly dynamic and elegant appearance, but also contribute to further improved aerodynamics.

Exclusive accessories bring an extra dose of sportiness to the interior.
Specially developed BMW M Performance Accessories take the interior ambience of the BMW X5 M and X6 M – already an extremely sporty environment in standard form – to even greater heights. The LED door sill plates in brushed stainless steel look with illuminated M Performance lettering grab the attention when you open the front doors, and battery power means they are extremely easy to retrofit, with no need for laying cables. The sense of sporting prowess on board can be sharpened still further by sophisticated carbon accessories such as BMW M Performance carbon interior trim strips and carbon trim bearing the BMW M logo for the selector lever of the eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox. Centre console trim with a high-quality combination of Alcantara and painted carbon around the selector lever is also available to lend the cockpit a sporty and exclusive accent.

Another highlight of the Accessories range for the interior of the BMW X5 M and X6 M is the BMW M Performance steering wheel in Alcantara with attractive carbon trim. It is extremely grippy even in extreme driving situations and remains equally pleasant to the touch in all temperatures. The blue centre marker at the top imparts a genuine motor sport feeling, a sensation underlined by BMW M Performance stainless steel pedal covers, which provide a visually appealing and functional complement to the other BMW M Performance Parts.

The easy-care BMW M Performance floor mats also display eye-catching M Performance lettering and fit snugly in the footwell. The BMW M Performance key case with sophisticated Alcantara/carbon material combination, fine accents in M Light Blue and high-quality blue hex bolt provides a permanent reminder of the sporting performance of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M wherever you happen to be.

Original BMW Accessories increase the value of the car.
In contrast to many third-party products, Original BMW Accessories – which include the range of BMW M Performance Parts – are always matched perfectly to the model in question and are permitted for use with that vehicle. The car’s warranty, moreover, remains unaffected. All of which means the high-quality selection of Original BMW Accessories enhances not only the car’s driving pleasure, but its value as well.
