The BMW 2 Series isn’t the first car people imagine being an 800-horsepower monster. With a peak output of just 322 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, the 2 Series is good enough to make an impression, but not quite to really turn heads. But thanks to the magic of the aftermarket tuning scene, there is a way to get the 2 Series to get to that 800-horsepower level.

Latvian tuner HGK Motorsport proved as much when it developed a tuning program for the 2 Series that gave it an astounding 820 horsepower and 679 pound-feet of torque. Of course, a little point of order has to be established because a big part of HGK’s work was taking out the 2er’s standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and replacing it what a 6.2-liter LS V-8 crate engine that’s normally found on the Chevrolet Corvette. That’s what happened here with the 2 Series F22 Eurofighter, a completely reimagined and reconfigured BMW that can race and drift with the best race and drift cars in the game today.

In addition to the massive engine swap and subsequent modifications put into the new V-8, HGK Motorsport also worked on giving the 2 Series a body kit that fits into its new F22 Eurofighter identity. The upgrades are as intense as the engine. The results definitely speak for themselves.

So yes, it is possible for a normal BMW 2 Series to become an all-purpose destroyer on the road. It needs a lot of work – and a completely new engine – but if it’s done right, it can really turn the 2er’s world upside down in a hurry.

Exterior

As far as exterior upgrades go, this program has one of the most visceral results, thanks in large part to HGK drawing inspiration from the Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor fighter planes, providing the reason for why it’s called the F22 Eurofighter. The military-inspired paint finish is another highlight of the upgrades, but the real treat is the aggressive body kit that features a completely redesigned front bumper, flared wheel arches, and humped hood that plays into the massive engine upgrade it also received.

Interior

The interior upgrades aren’t that extensive on account of HGK developing the F22 Eurofighter for Formula Drift purposes. That objective saw the inclusion of a roll cage, in addition to all the equipment required for drifting purposes.

Drivetrain

This is where HGK Motorsport was able to turn this 2 Series from just another BMW into a drifting masterpiece. It’s also the part where the tuner received the most help, which goes to show how extensive the upgrades are in this department. The first order of business was taking out the car’s standard 2.0-liter inline-four engine and replacing with it a massive 6.2-liter LS V-8 crate engine. In other words, HGK, with the help of Mast Motorsports, replaced the 2 Series’s engine with the same engine being used by the Chevrolet Corvette. Once that was accomplished, a lot of work was done to install a laundry list of new components, including a Callies Magnum crankshaft, connecting rods from Billet, pistons from Diamond Racing, steel piston rings from Total Seal, titanium intake valves, retainers, and valve locks, among other new additions.

The result is an output of 820 horsepower and 679 pound-feet of torque, more than twice the output of the 365-horsepower M2. HGK Motorsport didn’t say how this much power affects the sports car’s performance times, but given how insane the increase was, it wouldn’t be surprising if the F22 Eurofighter cut more than a second of its 0-to-60-mph and improve its top speed in the vicinity of 220 mph. By every measurable standard, that's a bonkers engine upgrade.

Chassis and Suspension

Obviously, a car packing this much extra power needs to have its own chassis and suspension upgrades to accommodate the new capabilities. In this case, HKG Motorsport revamped the Bimmer’s chassis and modified the suspension system. Wilwood brakes – six-piston fronts and four-piston rears – have also been added.

Pricing

The BMW 2 Series F22 Eurofighter already has an owner in the form of Qatar's MK Racing so anybody who wants to get the same kind of upgrades will have to contact the tuner directly. Given how extensive it is and how many partners HGK had in building the F22 Eurofighter, don't expect it to come cheap.

Competition

BMW M2 by Dähler Design & Technik GmbH

Neither of these two programs come close to approaching what HGK Motorsport did to the 2 Series, but it’s worth noting that they too pack a nice amount of punch for the M2. The first program comes by way of Swiss tuner Dähler Design & Technik GmbH, which presented a multi-stage kit for the entry-level M performance car. The kit is made up of four different levels, each coming with a different amount of power. Level 1, for example, packs 408 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. Then there’s Level 2, which sees the output go up to 430 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. Not content with these two upgrades? Consider Level 3 then and its output of 450 horses and 487 pound-feet of twist. Finally, there’s the Level 4 upgrade that takes the M2’s output to as much as 531 ponies and 538 pound-feet of torque, helping the sports car reach 62 mph in less than four seconds and hit a top speed of 199 mph.

BMW M2 by Alpha-N Performance

Just like Dähler’s program for the BMW M2, Alpha N-Performance’s own tuning kit for the same car features a three-stage upgrade that relies on the tuner’s EVOX performance module. The first stage upgrade nets an output of 400 horses and 438 pound-feet of twist while the second stage upgrade brings it up to 415 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. The third and final stage takes the M2’s power up to 430 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. The gains in the third stage upgrade is aided by a racing downpipe without a catalytic converter and a free-flow silencer with throttle control. Alpha-N didn’t specify the kind of performance gains these tuning programs provide, but given the results, an M2 with a third stage upgrade could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in about four seconds to go with a top speed of around 190 mph.

Conclusion

If this is the kind of car you'd like to own for drifting purposes, then by all means, bow down to HGK Motorsport. The tuner deserves as much for creating a drifting machine that's as absurd as it is impressive. But if you're thinking of something a little more on the conservative end, I doubt that this is the kind of program you'll be looking for.
