First unveiled in 2013 as a production model, the BMW i3 has been steadily holding down the fort for BMW as the automaker’s resident urban electric car. In the two years that it’s been around, the i3 has kept pace with the Nissan Leaf in their particular market. Judging by the sales momentum BMW’s urban electric ride is enjoying at the moment, there’s reason for optimism within BMW that the i3 will continue to grow as a model.

Here in the U.S., BMW North America is giving customers a chance to take home a limited edition i3 that’s exclusively available in this region. Limited to just 50 units, the i3 Shadow Sport Special Edition comes with a unique exterior and interior that puts to light some new options that BMW will eventually offer to prospective owners of the i3. The most unique feature of the electric hatchback is a new paint finish that’s actually making its debut on this particular model. It also has a handful of interior upgrades and a suspension update that’s also a first for the i3.

The i3 Sport Shadow Edition is, for all intents and purposes, a flashy take on the urban electric car that U.S. customers can finally claim as their own. It’s a refreshing change considering that most special editions to come out of BMW in recent years have been earmarked for other markets, namely Europe and Japan. The U.S. finally gets its turn.

What makes the BMW i3 Shadow Sport Special Edition special

The i3 Shadow Sport Edition distinguishes itself from other BMW i3 models with a new Fluid Black paint finish that’s making this debut on this particular model. The new color is a great shade on the i3. It brings out a look of attitude to the i3 that its previous colors couldn’t. The special edition i3 also gets a new moonroof, which should be a welcome addition for US customers. The moonroof is actually making its debut in this region after previously being available only to European customers. The last bit of exterior detail is the new set of 19-inch light alloy turbine wheels wrapped in all-season tires.

Moving inside, the 50 lucky owners of the i3 Shadow Sport Edition will be treated to an interior package featuring a Deka World dark grey trim with blue highlights. The dark and provocative trim seamlessly blends into the the dark cloth of the cabin, creating a unified look with the Fluid Black paint finish of the body.

As special as the i3 Shadow Sport Edition is, don’t expect to see anything new out of the car’s hybrid synchronous electric motor. The standard output of 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque will still be there, free from any performance modifications. As such, the special edition i3 will still be capable of sprinting from 0 to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds to go with a top speed of 93 mph. The hatch does have a new sport-tuned suspension, an exclusive feature among all i3 models. This new setup provides improved handling for the hatchback.

As was previously mentioned, the i3 Shadow Sport Edition is a unicorn model that’s limited to just 50 units in the US. Each is priced at $47,400 and is available only as a BEV model. Interested customers in this part of the world can start placing their orders at their local dealerships or by calling BMW North America at 844-269-3267.
