Potent tuning kits have always been the name of the game for German tuner Alpha-N Performance. Over the years, the aftermarket specialist has created a host of impressive tuning kits for BMW’s finest. Remember the RS program for the 1 Series M back in 2012? How about the GT2-R program for the M3 in 2013? Or more recently, the Stage 1 program for the 2014 BMW M4? All these prior programs shared something similar with each other, and it’s not because they’re the work of one company. These programs provided comprehensive and effective improvements on those Bimmers. Now, Alpha-N Performance is launching a new program with the same intention, only this time, it’s for the brand new BMW M2.

Without jumping into the nitty gritty details of the program just yet, Alpha-N Performance’s “RS” tuning kit for the M2 covers a wide range of exterior, interior, and performance enhancements. Some of the updates are so subtle that most people won’t see them off the bat, but by and large, this new tuning kit was built and developed to turn the M2 into an all-conquering sports car.

That has always been Alpha-N Performance’s MO and it doesn’t appear to be any different with this new program for the M2. The tuning firm is even offering a meatier “Clubsport” version that effectively turns the M2 into a veritable track-day racer. That’s a significant set up from being a sports car, but if there’s a company that has proven to be up to this kind of aftermarket transformation, it’s Alpha-N Performance.

A quick look at the BMW M2 that’s been fitted with Alpha-N Performance’s tuning program shows a dramatically different sports coupe with a more purposeful appearance to it compared to the standard M2. The new-look M2 can trace its transformation from the bevy of aerodynamic components that have been fitted into the car. Up front, the German tuner installed a carbon fiber front spoiler with an adjustable air splitter that helps improve the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. Sculpted parts on the front bumper and side sills also make use of carbon fiber, essentially replacing the stock parts to cut the car’s weight, however small it may be.

The M2’s rear section also gets an aero enhancement in the form of a four-position adjustable carbon-fiber rear wing that creates the necessary downforce to keep the section firmly planted on the ground. Since the wing can be adjustable in four different positions, drivers can manipulate the amount of downforce needed in any particular situation. There’s also a carbon fiber roof panel that helps reduce mass, but according to Alpha-N Performance, that particular component is still under development. Once the whole package is complete, I expect this program to turn the M2 into a finely-tuned sports car.

Rounding out the list of exterior upgrades is a new set of 19-inch OZ Superforgiata lightweight alloy wheels that are wrapped in 245/35R19 and 265/35R19 tires.

Interior

As is often the case with some of its past works, Alpha-N Performance kept the interior modifications at a minimum. Don’t expect a whole lot of new, high-quality materials inside the M2 because you’ll end up being disappointed. I can come to grips with that, even though I, like everybody else, would’ve preferred to see something different in the cabin of the M2.

Fortunately, Alpha-N Performance isn’t leaving us completely empty handed because the aforementioned Clubsport version of the M2-RS does come with a number of performance components, including a choice between a half or full roll cage and lightweight racing seats, presumably coming by way of Recaro.

Drivetrain

Like most of Alpha-N Performance’s programs, the biggest modification happens under the hood. In this instance, the German tuner installed its EVOX Multi-channel, Chip-tuning Box and a water-injection kit to the M2’s 3.0-liter, inline six-cylinder engine as part of a two-stage engine kit that bumps up the power to 395 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque (Stage 1) and 410 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque (Stage 2).

Performance numbers have yet to be revealed, but again, I see these engine upgrades cutting the M2’s 0-to-60-mph sprint time from 4.4 seconds to somewhere closer to four seconds dead. The M2’s top speed should also get a nice bump in the neighborhood of 175 mph, although that’s contingent on the electronic speed limited being removed.

Safety

With all the attention being paid to the M2’s exterior and engine, it’s imperative to remember that Alpha-N Performance also put in work on the sports car’s suspension by adding a fully adjustable coil-over suspension system that drops the car’s ride height. Alpha-N Performance didn’t specify the exact number, but the drop in ride height still gives the M2 a more aggressive stance and better cornering capabilities.

Pricing

The tuner hasn’t announced the pricing for the aero kit and the new set of wheels so the best way to find out is to contact Alpha-N Performance directly. That said, pricing for both EVOX performance upgrades amounts to €799 each, or a little over $900 based on current exchange rates. The tuner is also offering a €100 discount to anyone who orders the EVOX performance kit upgrade before July 31, 2016. That takes the price down to €699, or around $790.

Competition

BMW M2 By Dahler Design & Technik GmbH

A recent addition to the family of BMW M2 aftermarket kits comes by way of Swiss tuner Dahler. This particular program is made up of two specific engine kits, one of which comes in three different stages, each with a specific increase in output. The most basic is Level 1, which takes the output of the M2 to 408 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. Move past that and you get Stage 2 and its tuned power of 430 ponies and 464 pound-feet of twist. Then there’s the Stage 3 kit that adds even more power, resulting in 450 horses and 487 pound-feet of torque. Finally, we get the unique engine swap. This particular program involves taking out the M2’s turbo six, replacing it with the M4’s own twin-turbo, and then performing a tune of that engine. The result is 531 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque, enough to help the M2 sprint from 0 to 62 mph in less than four seconds to go with a top speed of 199 mph.

Alpha N-Performance is one of those tuning companies that understands the nature of the industry and goes about building its programs without overdoing itself. In some ways, it fits into the same category as AC Schnitzer. They’re capable of building programs that blow us away, but more often than not, they subscribe to the belief that form and function are more important attributes than radical styling.

This program for the BMW M2 perfectly illustrates that. It looks good at first glance, but when you look at it a little closer, the exterior changes are mostly there for aerodynamic and handling purposes. The way it exudes sportiness and aggressiveness is just a by-product of those carbon fiber additions. The same is true with the engine modifications. It’s not as extensive as other programs, but it is effective in pushing the car’s output closer to 500 horsepower. Overall, it’s a solid tuning kit that should give the BMW M2 an added dimension that’s above and beyond what that “M” badge can do.

For greater aerodynamic efficiency and a more purposeful appearance, the Alpha-N engineers equipped the aggressive nose of the M2 with a carbon fibre front spoiler featuring an adjustable air splitter and optimised brake-cooling vents. Carbon-fibre is also used for sculpted elements on the front bumper and side sills.

At the rear, a four-position adjustable carbon-fibre rear wing develops varying degrees of positive downforce over the rear axle according to the chosen angle of attack. A carbon-fibre roof panel to reduce mass at the highest point of the car is under development.

The big wheel arches of the Alpha-N M2-RS are filled to the brim by the 9.0 and 10.0x19-inch OZ Superforgiata lightweight alloy wheels shod with 245/35R19 and 265/35R19 tyres. Further daylight is squeezed out of the arches by the fully adjustable coil-over suspension, which lowers the ride height for a more purposeful stance and ground hugging cornering.

The 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder motor makes 370 hp out of the box. Fitting the Alpha-N Performance EVOX Multi-channel Chip-tuning Box, plus their water-injection kit raises this to 480 hp.

For track day addicts, Alpha-N Performance also offer a Clubsport version of the M2-RS, which differs from the ‘civilian’ model by the fitment of lightweight race seats, and either a half or full roll cage.
