All black for a menacing look

Introduced in 2015, the BMW M2 Coupe is the spiritual successor of the cool 1M Coupe and considered by many to be a more exciting proposition to the M4. And, the enthusiasts are pretty much right, as not only is the M2 is an authentic embodiment of the rear-wheel-drive, M-badged sports car, it’s also a bit more compact than the M4 and closer to the original M3 as far as dimensions go. With more than 12,000 units sold in its first full year on the market, the M2’s success is unquestionable. Now, BMW is celebrating just that with a special edition model called Black Shadow.

Not to be confused with the iconic Shadowline package, the M2 Edition Black Shadow is essentially a "triple black" treatment for the compact coupe. There’s absolutely no chrome on this car, with every single bright element reduced to either matte or glossy black. Oh, and there’s some carbon finish here and there too, which makes the Black Shadow a really menacing, yet somehow elegant car to look at. The kind that Darth Vader would drive on a regular basis.

Everything was blacked-out on this car for a more menacing look

The coupe comes finished in Black Sapphire metallic, a deep black that’s not as metallic as it is glossy. However, the hue is far from special, being one of the four colors you can have on the M2 in the United States. But, it’s the details that make the difference. The 19-inch alloys wheels, which feature a Y-spoke design, are finished in matte black.

The grille and the trim bars on the side panels have also been blacked-out, this time around finished in high-gloss black. But those aren’t the only types of black on this car. The mirror caps sport a carbon finish, which means, as you might have already guessed, that they look like they’re made from carbon-fiber. Pretty cool. Around back, the diffuser comes in the same carbon finish, while the double tailpipes now have black chrome trim, so they aren’t as shiny as on the standard model.

The drivetrain pairs the standard turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline-six engine with either a manual or automatic transmission

There’s no word on interior updates, so it’s safe to assume that BMW left everything unchanged inside the cabin. The same goes for the drivetrain, which pairs the same turbocharged, 3.0-liter, inline-six rated at 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque with a manual transmission as standard. Although there’s no extra oomph, the M2 remains pretty exciting, needing only 4.4 seconds to hit 60 mph from a standing start. Order it with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and the benchmark drops to 4.2 clicks.

BMW has yet to announce pricing, but we should find out more when it becomes available in April 2018. No word yet on whether it will be offered in the United States too or just in Europe.

Racing technology and an expressive, high performance-oriented design help the BMW M2 (combined fuel consumption: 8.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 199 g/km) achieve its exceptional position within the premium compact segment. The exclusive BMW M2 Coupe Edition Black Shadow emphasises the compact high-powered sports car’s performance characteristics with precisely harmonized design features. The edition model will be available from April 2018.

The BMW M2 fascinates with precise handling and compelling forward thrust. The car’s 272 kW/370 hp straight six-cylinder engine, classic rear-wheel drive and suspension technology developed and tuned on the basis of many years of motor racing expertise, has aroused worldwide enthusiasm amongst sport drivers. With the optional 7-speed M dual clutch transmission with Drivelogic, the BMW M2 sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds.

Within a very short time, the BMW M2 has become a bestseller, whilst also capturing new target groups. With more than 12,000 units sold worldwide during its first full production year, the BMW M2 advanced to become BMW M’s most successful model in 2017.

The BMW M2 Coupe Edition Black Shadow boasts selected design features that further accentuate the top athlete’s powerful appearance. The edition model is exclusively available in the exterior colour Sapphire Black metallic. Furthermore, 19-inch, black matt forged light alloys with a Y-spoke design and mixed tyres impressively underline the compact coupe’s looks.

These features are complemented by exterior mirrors in a carbon finish, the decorative grille for the M kidney and trim bars for the side panels in high-gloss black. With a rear diffuser in a carbon finish and black-chrome trims for the typical M double tailpipes, which are likewise integrated on both sides into the rear apron, the BMW M2 Coupe Edition Black Shadow sets additional race-inspired accents.

The BMW M2 Black Edition will be available from April 2018.
