This is the BMW X2 M Mesh Edition, a package-laden special edition model that adds more visual character to a crossover that, quite frankly, needs all the help it can get. A mesh kidney grille — not BMW’s new and controversial grille — stands out as the package’s most prominent addition. Exclusive color options, decals, and a new set of wheels are also included in the X2 M’s dress-up. The Edition M Mesh package for the X2 M is priced at $3,550.

What do we get with the M Mesh Edition for the BMW X2?

The package takes its name from the mesh kidney grille that it’s now sporting. It’s the first time the X2 gets this grille design — it’s finished in high-gloss black — so consider that an upgrade.

BMW is also introducing a new color, called Frozen Black-Brown metallic, that we’ll see for the first time on the X2. You might have to squint your eyes, but focus your attention on the inserts in the bumper trim. If it looks like dark brown to you, then you’ve found it. The same color can also be found on the cladding on the doors and side skirts and the wheel arch trim.

The orange decals on the wheels even create an attractive pattern when the crossover is moving. Another check on the positive is Bimmer’s use of BMW Individual’s High-gloss Shadow line package. It’s a standard feature in the M Mesh Edition package so those X2s will benefit from a lot of high-gloss black trim throughout the exterior and interior of the crossover.

Speaking of which, the interior also comes with fresh updates, none more prominent than the bi-color M sport seats that are dressed in Dakota leather and Mocha and Anthracite-colored Alcantara.

Orange contrast stitching brings some consistency to the entire setup. The colorful stitching extends to the center console, instrument panel, and, yes, even the floor mats. Opt for the X2 with the manual transmission and you’ll also get a gear shift level with M badging. Entry sills with “Edition” lettering and a projection of the X2's logo are solid cherries on top of that veritable X2 sundae.

Does the X2 Mesh Edition come with engine upgrades?

No, it doesn’t. On the bright side, the M Mesh Edition package is available in several X2 trims, specifically the diesel-powered sDrive18d, xDrive 18d, xDrive20d, and xDrive 25d, the gas-powered sDrive 18i and sDrive 20i, and the hybrid xDrive25e.

The variety of options means that you can avail of the M Mesh Edition package on different X2 models with different power outputs. The three diesel engines, for example, produce anywhere from 150 horsepower to 228 horsepower. Meanwhile, the two gas engines produce either 136 horsepower or 178 horsepower. Then there’s the hybrid, which produces 217 horsepower. Check out the table below for a full breakdown of available engines and their corresponding outputs.

Unfortunately, the M Mesh Edition package is only available on the X2 sDrive28i and xDrive28i models in the U.S.

How much is the M Mesh Edition Package?

The package itself is cheap — it costs only $3,500 — but you are going to have to buy an X2 crossover if you want to see the package in full bloom. On that end, the 2021 X2 sDrive28i starts at $36,600 while the 2021 X2 sDrive 28i is priced from $38,600. A destination fee of $995 applies to whichever trim of the X2 you buy.

Final Thoughts

I was a fan of the BMW X2’s looks when it first came out in 2018. Unfortunately, those looks age pretty quickly, which is probably why BMW decided to launch the M Mesh Edition package to add some layers of freshness to the X2’s style. The package accomplishes that in many ways — the available colors leave plenty to the imagination — but certain applications don’t necessarily hit the sweet spot.
