BMW recently updated its lineup for the 2022 model year. Apart from the refreshed existing models, the company also introduced the new M4 Convertible. The M4 Convertible comes with an all-wheel-drive system for the first time and receives power gains as well. The car has even lost its hard top in favor of a lighter, reinforced fabric soft top. Apart from the super long name - 2022 BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive – nothing else seems to be outrageously annoying.

Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Cabriolet

BMW has ‘Competition’ (pun intended) in the form of the AMG C63 S. Sadly Audi doesn’t have a like-for-like rival as the S5 Cabriolet doesn’t match-up with it and the RS5 doesn’t have a convertible model. The AMG C63 S measures pretty much the same with the BMW M4 Convertible in terms of exterior dimensions, save for a few inches here and there. Even this comes with a soft-top. On the inside, it is filled to the brim in terms of creature comforts.

If you’re a ‘no replacement for displacement’ guy or gal, then the Merc will please you. It is powered by a 4.0-liter, V-8 bi-turbo engine, unlike the Bimmer’s six-pot mill. It makes the exact same horsepower – 503 – but cranks out 516 pound-feet of twist, which is 37 pound-feet more than its rival. Also, the peak torque has a lower bandwidth from 1,750- to 4,500 rpm when compared to the BMW. So, if you are someone who loves to speed off the line, the strong low- and mid-range of the C63 S will please you.

The major difference here, however, is the drive layout. BMW has introduced the all-wheel-drive system of the M4 Convertible for the 2022 model, but the C63 S still comes with a rear-wheel-drive configuration. In terms of weight, the BMW would’ve been lighter if not for the all-wheel-drive system. But, it’s well-balanced that way. One’s got a bigger, heavy engine, and the other, a heavy drive system. The C63 S is just 29 pounds lighter than the M4 Convertible. Despite this, the AMG is 0.3 seconds slower to 60 mph, taking 3.9 seconds, unlike the BMW’s 3.6-second time.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG C63 S starts at $85,600 before destination, making it $700 cheaper than the BMW M4 Competition Convertible xDrive.
