BMW fired the first shot of a new war against Audi and Mercedes when it introduced the X1 in 2009 as its entry-level and resident mini SUV. Audi and Mercedes quickly returned fire, launching the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes GLA. Fast forward to 2016 and we still find the Q3, GLA, and X1 duking it out, but the X1 evolved into a second-generation model for 2016. With China being a pretty big market for BMW, and let’s not forget the Chinese love for long-wheelbase cars, it came as no surprise that the 2017 model year comes with an X1 LWB. In base form, it is powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder with a measly 136 horsepower, but it does come with a somewhat premium interior to go with some sport exterior looks – for a small SUV anyway. Like all other LWB models from BMW, the car was practically the same inside and out in comparison to is shorter brother, but that’s about to change a little bit as BMW has just announced an electrified X1 LWB that borrows a drivetrain from its cousin, the 225xe Active Tourer.
I know, that sounds like a mouthful, and let’s be honest, the name is ridiculously long, but it does speak to the electric nature of China’s latest plug-in hybrid model. While I advise you not to get your hopes up for any big styling differences, as there are none, the electrified drivetrain promises excellent fuel economy while the innovative battery location prevents any major loss to interior space or comfort. On top of that, it comes with a little extra power and technically it has all-wheel drive as well, thanks to the addition of that electric motor. So with that said, let’s revisit to overall styling of the X1 LWB and talk more about this hybrid drivetrain that turns the wheels and gets you from point A to point B.

There’s a lot of buzz around the upcoming New York Auto Show, which will see vehicles such as the 2015 Dodge Challenger and Charger, the Acura TLX and the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe, but the Beijing Auto Show, also scheduled this month, promises to be equally interesting.
Besides hosting debuts for concept cars like the Citroen DS 5LS R or Nissan’s new, yet unnamed sedan, the Chinese event will also have an impressive lineup of BMW vehicles on display. Among the new X4, the 2 Series Active Tourer and the i8, the Germans are set to unveil a new, special-edition version of the large 7 Series sedan.
Developed specifically for the Chinese market, the new vehicle is dubbed Horse Edition. Now don’t let the name full you, this luxurious land yacht doesn’t come with horseshoes instead of badges or saddles instead of seats. BMW christened it like that to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Horse.
Because it will be sold in China, the 7 Series Horse Edition will be based on the long-wheelbase version of the sedan, and will be equipped with a number of BMW Individual and M Sport features.

As with years past, BMW is celebrating Chinese New Year with the launch of a special-edition model, built specially for China. We’re pretty sure that most of you remember the very successful M3 Tiger Edition announced back in 2010. Now, as China officially enters the year of the horse, BMW is releasing the special-edition M6 Gran Coupe Horse Edition.
Do not expect this special-edition M6 to offer numerous updates over a base M6 Gran Coupe. In fact, it is based on a model equipped with the Competition Package and it includes embroidered horse logos on the headrests.
The new BMW M6 Gran Coupe Horse Edition is limited to six units ,and each will carry phenomenal price of 2.77 million yuan — about $458,000 at the current exchange rates. To put that into perspective, the U.S.-spec BMW M6 Gran Coupe is priced at $115,000, so that is quite a hike.
BMW also announced that the same treatment will also be applied to 30 M5 sports sedans too. This version will be priced at 1.98 million yuan - or about $327,000.

Last October, the U.S. market received a special-edition BMW M3 Coupe Frozen, which was limited to only 150 units. Now is time for the Chinese market to get its own special BMW M3 Coupe. It is painted in a sexy Frozen Blue and is limited to only 40 units.
Wondering how much the exclusivity costs? A lot if you ask us: 1.29 million Yuan (about $210,000). On the U.S. market with this kind of money, you can buy three BMW M3 Coupes and you will still be left with lots of money for gas.
For the money the lucky 40 Chinese customers will get this BMW M3 Frozen Blue combined with blacked out trims, kidney grille and side gills, and of course, some special edition badges on the interior.
That’s pretty much all the updates this special edition will offer, as everything else will remain unchanged. Under the hood, the car will retain the usual V-8 engine with 414 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque.

The Chinese market is well on its way to become the biggest automotive market in the world, so it’s not at all surprising that automakers are sending them special editions by the boatload. BMW sent them the beautiful M3 Tiger Edition last year, and this year they are bringing the special Z4 sDrive23i Flame Edition.
The Flame Edition gets its name from the special desert yellow metallic paint on the exterior. This color was inspired by the Art Karma desert located in the central west coast of South America. Combined with a new set of 17-inch alloy wheels, this paint provides the Z4 with a dynamic and elegant appearance.
The incredible exterior look is highlighted by the elegant touches in the interior. The special BMW Z4 sDrive23i Flame Edition features Alcantara / Nappa leather combined with yellow stitching, a yellow center console, and Alcantara trim for the doors and the center panels. BMW is also offering a personalized version of the piano black trim to provide the Flame Edition with an even cleaner look.
Is it just us or has the Chinese market received tons of special edition BMW M3s lately? In March, the company unveiled an M3 Coupe Matte Edition after last year’s M3 Tiger Edition, and they’re prepping the market for another one: the M3 Carbon Edition. This new special edition is limited to only 111 units and deliveries will begin in July at a starting price of 1.23 million yuan, or about $189,000 at the current exchange rates.
As its name suggests, the M3 Carbon Edition is all about carbon fiber. It will include a carbon fiber roof, black wheels, an auto scanner, a carbon fiber kit, carbon fiber rear spoiler, high-gloss chrome trim, and contrasting white and black leather with white stitching on the interior. A "carbon edition" logo on the door handles will help to further identify the special edition.
The carbon fiber roof reduces the car’s weight by about 11 lbs, but it also lowers the center of gravity. Under the hood, everything remains unchanged: a 420 HP V8 engine matched to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission Drivelogic.
BMW Brilliance Automotive will reveal at the Shanghai Auto Show a premium-segment plug-in hybrid sedan concept based on a long wheelbase version of the BMW 5 Series Sedan, developed exclusively for the Chinese automobile market and produced at the Shenyang site. Production version will begin in China in 2013.
The prototype is powered by a parallel hybrid drive set-up that combines a 214 HP combustion engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with an electrical motor that adds another 93 HP. The electrical motor takes its power from a special battery technology which includes the possibility of charging from a mains power supply.
When running purely on electrical power, it is possible to travel emission-free for up to 46 miles at a constant speed of 37 mph. Use of the combustion engine provides a minimum additional range of 248 miles, which is in line with the driving profile of Chinese customers in the premium segment.
BMW has unveiled on the Chinese market the special edition 7-Series Steinway & Sons Piano. The new edition will be limited to only 150 units, and was developed by BMW Individual in cooperation to New York-based piano manufacturer Steinway & Sons.
The new 7-Series Steinway & Sons Piano Limited Edition will be based on either 740i or 760i versions, and will be distinguished by a hand polished metallic paint, with texture comparable with Steinway piano. The whole painting process takes at least 35 hours to complete. The special edition also gets light shadow lines and 20" lightweight alloy wheels.
On the interior, the front and rear seats, door panels, center console, instrument panel and other components are covered in ’Merino’ white gold full leather, contrasting with different black exterior and interior elements. Highlighting the cooperation with the Steinway company are: Steinway logo on the seat head restraints and seat cushion gold harp, iDrive button with Steinway logo.
Back in 2010, the M3 was celebrating its 25th anniversary, which was a perfect opportunity for BMW to begin launching a bunch of special editions all over the world. China, for example, received the cool Tiger Edition, and since the Chinese market is flourishing, BMW has decided to throw them yet another special edition called the M3 Coupe Matte Edition.
Compared to a standard M3, the M3 Matte edition will be distinguished by two unique exterior paints: gunmetal gray and black. Both of these colors have been obtained by combining a metallic finish with a silky matte clear coat that allows for the special luxury gloss to glisten in the sun. Next to this, the special edition has also received new 19" black high-gloss alloy wheels, black chrome side air intakes and exhaust pipes, and red brake calipers.
The interior also get splashes of black and red in the black carbon fiber insertions and leather on the front and rear seats, and the door armrests. These are further decorated with red accent stitching.
In terms of power, the special edition M3 will still come packing its usual 4.0L V8 engine producing 414 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to the M3’s six-speed manual transmission with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated-manual transmission (M DCT)as an option.
As the Chinese automotive market continues to grow and play a very important role in the automotive industry, we fully expected to see more cars developed especially for it. And just how Europe got the M3 GTS, China will also be getting its own BMW M3 special edition. It will be called the Tiger Edition and will be limited to 250 units.
This special edition is appropriately named the Tiger due to the fact that 2010 is "The Year of The Tiger" in China. In fact, it starts on February 14, 2010 and ends on February 2, 2011. The tiger is also a symbol of bravery so the name was carefully chosen to excel in this particular market.
The M3 Tiger will be wrapped in Fire Orange metallic paint (same as the GTS) with contrasting black touches on the air intakes, the kidney grills, and chrome exhaust tips. The exterior package is finished by 19 inch black wheels.
On the interior it will get Novilla black leather with orange stitching, and, of course, a unique Tiger logo.
The Tiger Edition will join the 2010 Bentley Continental Flying SpurSpeed China and the 2010 Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce China Limited Edition, among other special editions made especially for China.
BMW has unveiled the BMW 550i xDrive Gran Turismo in China at the Beijing Auto Show. This is the first BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo to be equipped with the xDrive all-wheel-drive technology.
The BMW 550i xDrive Gran Turismo is powered by a 4.4 liter V8 engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and High Precision Injection. The engine delivers a total of 407 hp and a peak torque of 442 lb-ft and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This also makes the 550i xDrive Gran Turismo become the first model to combine BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive with an outstandingly dynamic, smooth, comfortable, and highly efficient eight-speed automatic transmission.
