The 2021 BMW X2 Goes Hybrid With 35 Miles of EV Range, But There Is a Trade-Off
Unveiled in 2017 as a slightly smaller and sportier alternative to the X1, the X2 was well received and sold more than 120,000 units in its first two years on the market. Come 2020, and BMW is introducing the first hybrid drivetrain for the subcompact SUV. The new trim is called the xDrive25e and combines the 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine in the base model with an electric motor. Launched in Europe for now, the hybrid should join the sDrive28i and the M35i models in the United States soon. Let’s see what it has to offer.
BMW Believes That Solid State Batteries Are Still At Least 7 Years Out
The biggest challenge that EVs are facing today has to do with batteries. To be more specific, extracting maximum range from the batteries and reduce the charging times. There are a lot of technologies being developed that would be the solution to these problems, but the brightest one as of now is the solid-state battery. These are much safer, but cost a lot more than lithium-ion packs, and its application in EVs is not mainstream yet. How long would it take for it to feature in EVs, you ask? BMW says at least seven years.
2022 BMW iNext Electric SUV
When BMW launched the Vision iNext concept at the 2018 Los Angeles Motor Show, it took the world by surprise. It was supposed to be the next big thing to come out of the company’s stable, but all people could talk about was that gaudy grille that eclipsed everything else.
The crossover with the Bavarian DNA is designed to combine advanced autonomous systems, connectivity, and electrification blended into one recipe that is touted to be the company’s flagship electric product. The model sits on a new platform and will provide the building blocks for the automaker moving forward. Is this a preview of what we can expect from BMW 10 years down the line?
The BMW i8 Goes Out of Production Soon, But The Story Doesn’t End There
The BMW i8 has become known as many things. BMW marketed it as a Porsche 911 rival. Some claimed it was the evolution of the BMW brand and a representation of what the future holds. Others hated it with a passion because it just didn’t lineup with every other BMW on the market. Regardless of how you look at the i8, one this is for sure, it’s not going to matter for much longer if the latest reports hold true. Those reports put the end of i8 production in the Spring of 2020.
2022 BMW iX2
The BMW X2 is barely two years old as a model and it’s already headed down the path of electrification. A prototype version of Bimmer’s relatively new compact crossover has been spotted in the snowy abode of Sweden, and while it’s easy to assume that said model is the plug-in hybrid variant of the X2, the truth is that it’s not.
This crossover is the test mule of the iX2, the all-electric version of the X2 crossover that will be launched sometime in 2021 or 2022. The spy photos captured the iX2 prototype sans any camouflage and that’s not by accident. Visually, it’s still the X2 but that little sticker that says “electric test vehicle” confirms that, other than a few design changes, this prototype is an all-electric crossover hiding in the X2’s clothing.
BMW Tried To Cast Shade on the Ford Mustang Mach-E By Unveiling Information About the 2021 BMW i4
BMW is set on keeping up with the electric car wave that is currently flooding the car industry and now that it has tested the waters with the i3, Munich will unleash its meat-and-potatoes electric car under the i4 nameplate sometime next year, probably at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show.
The i4 will take the shape of a sedan and will look a lot like the current BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. In our book, the 4er GC is one of the sleekest cars in Munich’s present lineup, by the way. Looks aside, two questions arise: will the i4 pack the desired amount of power and long-range capabilities sought after by today’s clientele? Furthermore, how will it fare against some of its potential competition out there?
2019 BMW i3 - Driven
There aren’t too many models out there that can legitimately lay claim to being funkier than the Nissan Juke, but the BMW i3 is one of them. It was introduced in 2013 as BMW’s first step into the electric market with a single purpose in mind – to see if people would actually be interested in an electric BMW. Well, the i3 has served its purpose very well and actually received a lot of attention. Whether that attention was received because of its funky minivan-like hatchback appearance or because it was an electric BMW is up for debate, but after 6 years on the market BMW has no choice but to dig into the electric car segment even more, so you can write the i3 off as a success either way.
That success, however, doesn’t come without a price, and in this case, the BMW i3 is paying the ultimate price – it will eventually die off as BMW focuses on other electric vehicles. With the i3’s time on the Earth limited to the next few years as BMW runs out parts inventory, we decided it would be a great time to test out the i3 before it fades off into oblivion. After all, it’s the last of its kind and, therefore, is probably as good as it will ever get. This is our story of a week well spent with the soon-to-be-extinct BMW i3.

Let’s be honest here for a minute. When you first heard about autonomous technology and realized that a car can drive itself, the thought of having car sex would have crossed your mind. I’m not judging you for it; movies have shown us that amorous activities in the car are viable and feasible. The Wolf of Wall Street’s opening scene, anyone?

BMW i Hydrogen Next Is Yet Another Fuel Cell Attempt That Promises Zero-Emission Future, But I Don’t See How It Can Happen
BMW has an exciting relationship with hydrogen-powered vehicles. Not only did it create engines that run on hydrogen (like the hydrogen-powered seven series V-12 a decade ago), but it signed an agreement with Toyota in 2013 for the development of a hydrogen-powered car. Since then, we have seen a 5 series GT with a Fuel Cell system, and, even more remarkably, a BMW hydrogen i8. Then, in 2016, BMW officials supported the claim about hydrogen’s future with the comment about the fuel cell car in 2021. It all points out that that car is the BMW i Hydrogen NEXT as they have called it during the reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The BMW i8 really stands out in the car world. It’s considered ugly by some and gorgeous by others. It was one of the first performance models from BMW to make use of a hybrid drivetrain and, despite the fact that it had a very limited all-electric range, it still delivered exactly what most customers wanted. Unfortunately, the world isn’t long for the i8 as BMW has recently hinted that there won’t be a successor, but the current model should stick around for a while as it was recently updated for the 2019 model year. There wasn’t a lot that came new for 2019, but there were some minor tweaks to the drivetrain, a slightly larger battery pack, and some other styling changes here and there – just enough to keep things fresh.
A 1.5-liter, three-cylinder gasoline engine provided a little bit of getup while the hybrid drivetrain did the rest. All told, there was 228 ponies and 236 pound-feet of torque from the engine and another 141 ponies and 184 pound-feet from the motor. It can hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and tops out at 155 mph (or 75 mph in EV mode) It’s not the fastest car on the block, but it sure does look pretty cool. BMW to Go All PHEV at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show
BMW, like any major automaker, will deploy a whole bunch of electric cars at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. This isn’t surprising us at all, but what’s interesting is that the Bavarian brand chooses to concentrate on its hybrid and electric offerings, like the highly-anticipated 330e, the 745e, and the X5 xDrive45e that will share the drivetrain with the facelifted PHEV 7er.
Is the writing on the wall for gas-powered cars? The answer may still be no, but it’s clear that every big player in the automotive world wants to prove to its customers, as well as its peers and the environmental agencies, that hybrid models and all-out electric cars represent an increasing share of its offering. BMW is a leading example, not only with its i family of electric cars but also with its growing variety of hybrids. However, for those who aren’t excited about electric motors and the like, BMW will also display the tasteful M850i Individual Night Sky model under the limelight at Geneva.
