The seventh generation M5 will take a completely different approach: it will be hybrid! That should come as no surprise to anyone as most makers are trying to electrify their lineup, and it has been the subject of speculation for a while. Now, however, BMW M Workshop Manager, Hans Rahn, has confirmed the next M5 will be a hybrid.
BMW’s New LMDh Prototype For The 2023 Season Looks Very M-Like
BMW is the latest automaker to offer us the first look on its future LMDh race car. While some of its design elements are still hidden, we can make a pretty good idea on what to expect in 2023. Here’s A Look At The Hybrid BMW M5 That Could Make Close To 750 Horses!
BMW has been offering the current generation M5 since 2017, so a new generation was expected to come out soon. First, rumors about the next M5 started to surface in 2020 when we learned for the first time that the sports sedan could be hybrid. Then, back in January 2022, we had the first spy shots that confirmed those rumors: the next M5 will indeed be a hybrid car!
Now, BMW continues to test the next M5, and our spy photographers were able to catch a prototype playing in the snow around Sweden.
The 2024 BMW M5 Hybrid Confirmed via A New Set of Spy Shots
Rumors of a BMW M5 hybrid have finally been confirmed thanks to the latest M5 prototype that has been spotted doing some public road testing. We know this isn’t a basic 5 Series due to the extra-large brakes, but the “Hybrid Test Vehicle” sticker on the driver’s door exposes BMW’s desire to take the M5 electric. There’s also a new flap on the front fender, which is likely for a charging port indicating that this is a plug-in hybrid M5 and will likely offer some kind of usable electric-only range. It should be noted that this charging door is in the same place and is the same shape and size as that on the 545e xDrive.
With all of this in mind, will BMW manage to keep the V-8 under the hood? We’re going to say that it’s quite likely. Part of the reason the M5 is going the hybrid route is to help it not only cut fuel consumption but meet the stricter emissions regulations. As of now, there’s not much more to say about this prototype, but this is its first outing, so if it will be revealed anytime in 2022, it’ll come much later in the year, with 2023 being more likely. It should go on sale as a 2024 model.

The BMW M1 was the first standalone M model, and it was produced for just three years – from 1978-1981. It has taken 40 years, but a new standalone M model has finally been revealed, and while it’s not the AMG-fighting sports car we all expected, it certainly harnesses everything that BMW M stands for. This angular, aggressive crossover isn’t an electric car as you might have expected, either. In fact, it is powered by a brutal, hybridized V-8, and even better yet, it’s heading to the production line in 2022.
10 Things a BMW M Hypercar Needs to Corner the Market

We were quite surprised to see what we believed at the time was a BMW 8 Series with a mid-engine configuration. Due to the weird vents in the rear quarter glass, the louvers on the rear window, and the fact that whatever was behind the front seats was covered, there was certainly something going on. A few days after those spy shots started making rounds, we learned that BMW claimed that “mid-engined 8 Series” was little more than a test vehicle that’s passed from department to department to test new technology and mechanical goodies. At that time, we admitted that a mid-engine configuration was unlikely, but despite the lack of electric motor whine, BMW could be testing a hybrid powertrain setup. According to a new report, we may have been right.

BMW is making a bold statement for the future of the company with the Vision M Next concept, a radical looking sports car with a plug-in hybrid heart that’s jam-packed with tech. The study not only makes a statement on design, but it also emphasizes the choice future drivers will have to make - will you drive yourself to your destination or will you allow the car to drive you there?
The automaker touts it as “a glimpse into the future of sporty driving,” but also a vehicle that “demonstrates how state-of-the-art technology can also make the experience of driving yourself purer and more emotionally engaging.” It’s therefore trying to meld two ideas that at first seem mutually exclusive: deriving fun not only from driving, but also being driven around in a sporty car.
