Despite all the expertise and experience in creating bespoke models, Bugatti nearly quit mid-way given how complex the pattern work on this Divo was

When you’re the carmaker equivalent of Scrooge McDuck in terms of money, you can do just about anything; case in point being this gentleman who commissioned Bugatti to paint the Divo with ladybug-esque spots! It is way more complex than it sounds and the French automaker nearly backed out of the whole project. But, after a year and a half, they managed to successfully execute it and deliver the car to the customer.

This particular customer from the States commissioned the automaker to come up with a geometric pattern consisting of diamond shapes in unique color contrast. The colors selected for this project were ‘Customer Special Red’ and ‘Graphite’, both metallic shades, along with 1600 diamonds spread across the entire body in an algorithmic fading manner. What made this whole task even more difficult was to implement the diamonds with this effect on the Divo’s complex body design.

The patterns derived on CAD didn’t translate the same way in reality because it was a 2-D graphic being applied on a 3-D sculpture. To counter this, Bugatti had to digitally modify them to not distort the diamonds. The automaker even mentioned that all it took was one millimeter’s difference to ruin the entire visual effect.

After all the tweaks were done digitally, 20-foot films were applied over a test vehicle to see if the diamond pattern was even feasible as the final design.

Once the diamond placements were figured out (which needed trimming and replacing the shape on execution), the Divo needed to be painted. So, all the diamonds were removed and the hypercar was painted with the Customer Special Red shade first and the Graphite color on top of it along with a clearcoat to invert the pattern. It took two weeks for the painting as it had to be sanded, smoothed, checked, retouched, and then re-sanded. Finally, after working on it for a year-and-a-half, Bugatti delivered the car to the owner.

If a company like Bugatti, the one known to execute some of the most ridiculous ideas in the auto world, was on the verge of giving up, you can imagine how complex this must have been. Every Bugatti is special in its own way, but this Divo Ladybug will certainly be one that all the people involved will remember all their lives. That said, this is fantastic work from Bugatti and the Divo Lady Bug looks pretty cool in its final avatar. Fortunately, the owner recognized the efforts and was happy with the end result. The Divo is a limited-production model with only 40 of them slated to be built. So, that’s one way to make an exclusive model an ultra-exclusive one!

The Divo is powered by the same 8.0-liter, quad-turbocharged W-16 engine as the Chiron. It makes 1,479 horses and 1,180 pound-feet of twist. The hypercar takes 2.4 seconds to 60 mph from a standstill and has a top speed of 236 miles per hour. The Bugatti Divo starts at €5 million, which is approximately $6.05 million as per the exchange rates at the time of writing this article. There’s no word on how much this Lady Bug cost the owner, though.
