As a child, I used to fantasize all the time about zipping around the galaxy in my own personal spaceship. I still do, actually, but that’s not the point. The point is that the folks who call the shots at the world’s top automakers are just as prone to flights of fancy, but unlike the cardboard-box dreams you and I have, these people have the means to make it happen – on four wheels, that is. And that’s awesome, because if you take a second to look around, you’ll realize automotive spaceships are all over the place. Here’s our Top 5.
The criteria for this list are pretty simple. First off, we limited it to production cars, which means no one-offs. However, race cars and anything not street legal is okay, given that highway patrol has yet to deploy a space division. Beyond that, warp speeds and exotic materials are a must, as is interplanetary styling.

Top 5 Cars Sold at Gooding & Company Auction During Monterey Car Week 2016
When it comes to major auctions, it’s pretty common to find various Ferrari models at the top of the list. This year, the auctions taking place during Monterey Car Week were wild as usual. Mecum auctions turned out some amazing vehicles with the top 10 cars pulling in nearly $20 million, but that’s nowhere near the kind of numbers we saw at the Gooding & Company auction. In fact, Gooding’s number for the top five cars was more than double that of Mecum’s top 10 – pretty wild right?
Gooding had a lot of cars listed, and 160 of those lots actually sold. Some of the lower-priced cars include models like a 1954 Alfa Romeo 1900 C Coupe for $412,500, a 1988 Porsche 959 Comfort for $1,320,000, a 1954 Austin-Healey 100/4 BN1 Le Mans for $143,000, a 1928 Morris Oxford for just $49,400, and there was even a 1968 Iso Grifo 7 Litri that sold for $682,000. Okay, so some of those numbers might night be “low” for some of us, but in the grand scheme of things, none of them are much when you consider the most expensive car sold at Gooding this year commanded just of $18 million. More about that later, but I’ll give you a hint: It’s a Ferrari. Shocker, right?
Well, with that said, let’s take a good look at Gooding’s top five from this year at Monterey and talk a little about them. There’s just something about these high-dollar collectibles that really gets the blood flowing, isn’t there?

This is the ultimate bar room and barbecue debate that has been raging on for years and will no doubt persist for years to come. What makes a car cool? Is it cutting edge technology, timeless and sexy good looks, or ultra high performance?
We think it’s all of those features and then some. In addition to a combination of those factors, we’d like to think that a cool car can be defined as something that has influenced our attitude and thinking towards how we perceive what a car is and stands for. Some of them have an intangible quality that has captivated our hearts and minds.

The holy grail of speed has always been the production car speed record. Car companies shoot for this record - if they can - in hopes that they can put their names in the history books. Some of them have succeeded and some have failed, but either way, these machines are fantastic.
Most of the cars on the list are very expensive and only built in limited numbers. You would be hard pressed to find any one of the top ten machines on normal streets. Hell, you would be hard pressed to find these cars on local tracks.
In order to get on the list, the car must be street legal, so no Formula One cars or land speed machines. The laws for getting on the list are also very tough, as there are no set rules. Nonetheless, the current fastest production car hit a speed of 267 miles per hour. Can you guess which car that was?

When you get into this category, it’s hard to say if one is better than the other. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and McLaren are all wonderful products, but is one better than the other one in the real world? Probably not, but there are a few things we can look at to try and determine a solid list.
When you have this kind of money, performance is expected out of these machines and that is a key thing to remember. Every car on this list is fast enough for most people. Many will begin to point out numbers and statistics to prove that their car should be ranked higher up. What they fail to understand is that most of the people who buy these machines will never get close to those numbers. For them, it’s more about the car. With that in mind, we will look at styling, prestige, luxury, and the sensations that you get when you sit behind the wheel.
There is a never a right answer when comparing these machines. Everybody has their own opinion and everybody will think they’re correct. We really had to think about this one long and hard because, well, we had no idea how to rank most of these machines. The top ten supercars for 2010 is just one of life’s great mysteries.
Nonetheless, we persevered on your behalf to try and rank today’s best supercars. We would also like to point out price was not considered in this ranking. If you can afford any one of these cars, most of the time price isn’t going to be a big deal.

Auto Motor und Sport recently took on an exercise to determine which car among a variety of exotic sports models was the fastest of them all. On the track were Aston Martin Vanquish S, Bugatti Veyron, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper SRT-10, Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, Ford GT, Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, Mercedes SLR McLaren, and Porsche 911 Turbo.

Popular Science awarded the Bugatti Veyron with the "2006 Grand Award". The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 cannot fairly be compared with other cars, because none, including Formula One racers, can match its specs: 1,001 horsepower, 253 mph, 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds.

The Bugatti Veyron has wiped the floor with the opposition in Autocar’s annual 0-100-0mph contest, featured in the current issue of the world’s oldest car magazine, even managing to beat a Suzuki GSX-R1000 superbike.
