Uh-Oh! Lamborghini, Bugatti, and Ducati Future Lies Under Doubt
Earlier this month we heard rumors that the Volkswagen Group wants to transfer the Bugatti brand to Croatian company Rimac Automibili. The transaction would turn Bugatti into an EV company, but it would also give Porsche access to Rimac’s high-performance electric drivetrain.
The same report claimed that Volkswagen is also considering selling Lamborghini and Ducati. Now, Volkswagen confirmed that at least three brands are under review and a decision about their future will be taken in a management board meeting in November. The group is currently discussing the future of Bugatti, Lamborghini, and Ducati.
Bugatti Could Reveal a Rimac-Powered Electric Hypercar In October 2020
Following rumors that the Volkswagen Group will sell the Bugatti brand to Croatian electric carmaker Rimac, it has now surfaced that the French brand will unveil a Rimac-powered hypercar in October 2020.
Bugatti’s first electric vehicle will be heavily inspired by the Vision Le Mans concept. Rumors also claim that it will be a track-only model and that it will be built in extremely limited numbers or might be a one-off.
Bugatti Could Soon Be Sold Off to Rimac
Revived in 1987 by Italian entrepreneur Romano Artioli, Bugatti was acquired by the Volkswagen Group in 1998. Under German ownership, the French brand introduced the Veyron and the Chiron, as well as a handful of one-off supercars, all powered by massive W-16 engines with more than 1,000 horsepower. Come 2020 and Bugatti could be sold off, and rumor has it the French company may end up with Rimac Automobili, the Croatian firm that produces electric supercars, drivetrains, and battery systems.

To date, there are only two vehicles that have ever topped the Veyron, and those are the Hennessey Venom GT at 270 mph and the Koenigsegg Agera RS at 278 mph. The SSC Tuatara is said to be capable of going beyond 300 mph, but it has yet to be proven, and Hennessey claims that the Venom F5 can hit 301 mph, but that hasn’t been proven yet either.
Are Bugatti Cars Reliable?
There is no real study of how reliable Bugatti vehicles are, and that’s not surprising because everything Bugatti builds is considered a “limited” model. Even the base-model Bugatti – the Chiron – is limited to just 500 examples. The Divo is limited to just 40, and the La Voiture Noire was sold as a one-off that we’ll probably never see again until the current owner decides it’s time to sell for a profit. For what it’s worth, every Bugatti is hand-built (even the Chiron) and repairing anything to the engine requires delivery back to Bugatti as the car needs to be split in half to access most of the mechanicals. If you’re thinking about buying one, keep in mind that even basic maintenance is cheap, with an oil change setting you back some $21,000!
