Trucks and high-performance cars definitely made their presence felt at the 2015 North American International Auto Show, but when all is said and done, it could be the Buick Avenir Concept vehicle that turns out to be one of the most important introductions in Detroit. Avenir is French for "future" or "coming soon," and we can only hope that this new concept vehicle hints at a new flagship sedan for Buick. Buick has definitely turned its lineup around starting around 2010 and 2011, but the addition of a stunning, all-wheel-drive flagship like the Avenir Concept would punctuate this brand’s renaissance.

In recent years, rumors have swirled regarding a Buick attempting a four-door coupe in a similar vein as the Porsche Panamera, and while that sounded like an impossible feat for an automaker like Buick, the Avenir Concept is definitely a home run. Unlike most concept vehicles, there is an impressive amount of realism in every aspect of the Avenir. It isn’t powered by a mythical 600-horsepower, plug-in hybrid powertrain, the styling isn’t too extreme that we couldn’t imagine it out on the road and even the interior — while obviously conceptual — still has the feeling of a production car.

More importantly, Buick’s global momentum has progressed enough that we could really see the brand green-lighting a halo vehicle such as the Avenir. With a lineup filled with front-drive sedans and crossovers, the timing is perfect for Buick to become a true player in the luxury segment with a flagship based on this concept.

“Avenir embodies Buick design, which centers on effortless beauty and presence without pretense. It demonstrates the growing international reach of Buick and offers an exciting vision of where it can go,” said Ed Welburn, vice president of General Motors Global Design. “The interior is designed with the driver and passengers’ comfort and well-being in mind.”

New naming strategy isn’t that big of a deal

Beginning in 2019, Buick will stop using its brand plate on the tailgate of its vehicles, leaving just the model’s name and the brand’s Tri-Shield logo as the only identifiers of the same model. Word of Buick’s plans first came to the surface after the debut of the 2019 Buick Envision showed a noticeable absence in the company’s usual exterior identifiers. The model name and the badge were present, but the “Buick” brand plate was nowhere to be found. As it turns out, this is all part of a new strategy that Buick will be implementing by next year.

Avenir Name to Serve as Sub-Brand for Buick

Buick has a plan to make a better luxury car

Buick says it wants to capitalize on a recent uptick in growth, and in order to do so, it has set about creating a new top-of-the-line luxury sub-brand. Taking cues from the Avenir sedan concept first revealed at the Detroit Auto Show last year, the sub-brand looks poised for release on a global scale starting with the 2018 model year.

Essentially, the Avenir sub-brand will be akin to the Denali trim level currently in place for GMC’s range-topping truck models. Buick hopes the inclusion of Avenir-branded offerings will cement gains made with its changing customer base, which according to a recent press release, includes more female buyers and former customers of competing brands. If all goes according to plan, Avenir will also expand Buick’s reach overseas.

So then – what’ll make the Avenir sub-brand stand out amongst the competition? Buick says the exterior will include “a three-dimensional mesh grille, large-diameter wheels, and unique trim finishes,” while the cabin space will incorporate a “quiet, inviting environment with unique seat details, modern trim materials and Avenir script identification.”

Simply put – a sharp exterior styling with plus-sized rollers and a fancy fascia, as well as upscale materials and lots of badges in the interior. Sounds about right.

Buick Trademarks Avenir, LaCrosse Sport Touring and Regal Sport Touring

Buick Trademarks Avenir, LaCrosse Sport Touring and Regal Sport Touring

According to a report, Buick has filed a few intriguing trademarks recently, including the Avenir, the Regal Sport Touring, and the LaCrosse Sport Touring.

With Buick managing to survive GM’s purge back in the 2000s, it was clear that there was a future for the brand. In more recent years, the Buick brand has migrated away from the granddad’s-car image to a brand tuned more toward sub-luxury buyers. In addition to adding more luxury, it has also added a touch of youthfulness with models like the Verano and Regal Turbo, and the Cascada convertible. Because of its recent movement, seeing these new trademarks is really no surprise.

The Avenir name is the most interesting of the trademarks, as it could potentially signal the brand’s intentions to move forward with its super-luxurious 2015 Avenir Concept. A model like the Avenir would not necessarily sell well, but it would give the brand the level of prestige it needs for more buyers to consider buying a Buick instead of stretching for the Bimmer.

As for the Sport Touring models, there are a few scenarios. The most likely of these is that they are simply new trim levels that give the two models more sportiness and luxury. The other scenario requires a look across the Atlantic at the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer, which is essentially a station wagon version of the Regal. This points toward the possibility that Buick could be looking to release a pair of wagons based on the two sedans here in the U.S., but that is highly unlikely.
