The BYD G3 was first introduced in 2009 as a more luxurious option to the F3 on which it’s based. Marketed to China’s growing market of wealthy car buyers who favor lengthened cars, the G3 comes on a stretched F3 platform, adding an additional 2.8 inches in overall length and 0.4 inches in wheelbase. The car is also fitted with more standard equipment and luxurious amenities than the F3, including more powerful engine options, a dual-mode sunroof, leather seating surfaces, and an in-dash infotainment system.

The extra room in the rear seats offers Chinese owners with chauffeurs the ability to stretch out while headed to work. On the weekends, owners are treated to a more upscale dashboard with cobalt-light gauges with twin LCD screens showing vehicle information. A manual transmission comes standard, but a CVT is offered with the largest of the three engines.

As BYD expected, sales of the G3 are below that of BYD’s other products. When introduced for the 2010 model year, the G3 only sold 12,000 units within the first six months. That’s less than one tenth the combined number of F3 and F3R sales during that same time. Regardless, the G3 still remains competitive in the market.

The G3 still evokes plenty of criticism for its unabashed copycat looks of the Toyota Corolla, though it’s more differentiated than the F3. A chrome grille, jeweled headlights, fog lights, 15-inch chrome alloy wheels, and body-color trim pieces dress up the outward appearance. LED taillights also bring more excitement to the rear.

Rear parking sensor, Bosch-sourced ABS and EBD, seatbelt pretensioners, and an electronic anti-theft system increases the cars safety and security.

Like the exterior, the G3’s interior mirrors that of Toyota. The center stack, steering wheel, and gauge cluster are all near knock-offs. The round air vents and infotainment system help bring some level of differentiation. Leather seats and LED lighting on the gauge cluster bring sophistication while a smart-key system with push-button starting adds convenience.

Rear seat occupants are treated to slightly more legroom than the standard F3. The car’s wheelbase is lengthened 0.4 inches while the overall length changes by 2.8 inches. That’s just enough to add extra posh to the G3 for those upscale buyers.

The G3 offers two different engines with three power levels. The standard engine is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder making 105 horsepower and 106 pound-feet of torque. That same engine gets a very mild power bump to 107 horses and 106 pound-feet of torque, and lastly the 1.8-liter four-cylinder makes a slightly more impressive 120 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque.

Both 1.5-liter engines come mated to a five-speed manual transmission while the more upscale 1.8-liter comes fitted with the CVT.

Though the G3 is a rough copy of the Toyota Corolla, the extra length and added tech put it more in line with the larger Toyota Camry. The Camry offers tons of interior volume, including enough room in the rear seats to get comfortable; a powerful set of engines and a hybrid system; and some swanky upgraded looks for 2015.

The Camry offers drivers the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder, the 2.5-liter Hybrid, and the 3.5-liter V-6. A six-speed automatic transmission is used on the standard powertrains while a CVT is used with the hybrid.

Pricing starts at $22,970 and tops out in the low $30,000 range.

The Sonata is another Asian market car that has done extremely well in the U.S. It has undergone some major changes for 2015, including a completely redesigned body and an updated interior. The powertrain options carry over, though with more power.

Under the hood is the returning 2.4-liter four-cylinder acting as the volume engine. A turbocharged 2.0-liter is the sportier of the trio, and an all-new 1.6-liter turbo four makes its debut as the gas-saver engine in the new Eco trim.

Pricing for the new Sonata starts at $21,150 and rises to the $33,000 mark with the Sport 2.0T Ultimate trim.

The G3 is not BYD’s most luxurious car nor its most technologically advanced, but it does offer a higher level of sophistication and luxury than its more pedestrian F3 counterpart. Though the G3 won’t make its way to the States, BYD continues to get closer to its eventual U.S. debut. Products like the 2015 Qin offer hope for the automaker’s future and show promise as to what Americans can begin to expect from BYD.
