BMW has announced that the 1-Series Convertible will be sold on the US market starting April 2008, in the same time with the coupe version. The Convertible version will be sold for less than $40.000, compared with the mid-$30,000s for the coupe.

Like the coupe, the convertible will be available with a choice of two 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engines: the 128i with 230 hp and the 135i with 300 hp.

Unlike the new 3-series convertible with a retractable top, which went on sale in March, the 1 series will have the traditional — and less expensive — soft top. The top goes down in 22 seconds.

BMW also will offer a 1-series crossover that’s expected to go on sale in 2010.

The three- and five-door models going on sale next month in Europe won’t be exported to the United States.
