New York City’s Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) has just ordered 184 Ford Mustang Mach-E GTs for law enforcement use.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT will join the city’s fleet of 30,000 vehicles by June 30. The Mustang Mach-E GT will be used by the New York Police Department (NYPD), the New York City Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Correction, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Department of Environmental Protection, NYC Emergency Management, DCAS Police, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The vehicle will be used across its multiple law enforcement departments, but it will be most prominently visible as the NYPD’s police cruiser.

The City of New York will spend a total of $11.5 million on the Mustang Mach-E GT, and it’s also their small step towards electrifying the NYPD’s fleet of 6,200 vehicles. And indeed what better way to showcase NYC’s commitment to sustainability by electrifying what is essentially their most visible enforcement vehicle.

“Law enforcement vehicles are the largest and most visible part of our City’s fleet,” said DCAS Deputy Commissioner and NYC Chief Fleet Officer Keith Kerman. “This order of all-electric Mach-Es will enable our law enforcement agencies to put electric models to the full test and work out maintenance, lights, and sirens, charging, and other operational issues. It is a critical step towards our goal of a fully electric fleet.”

This move represents the city’s first step in electrifying its fleet of law enforcement vehicles.

To meet the needs of the various agencies and their Mustang Mach-E GTs, DCAS has already installed 29 fast chargers for the NYPD and 103 fast chargers city-wide. DCAS is also slated to begin work in 2022 to install an additional 275 charging stations.
