The BMW M3 is one of the most successful chapters in the automotive history. Within two decades BMW has developed three generations of the M3, everyone being a unique and legendary car. In 2007 BMW has unveiled the fourth generation M3, with the introduction of one of the most beautiful and powerful BMWs ever. The M3 has made history in both road and racing, dominating with it’s sporty and nevertheless everyday life-suited series vehicles.

The history of the M3 began in 1986 with the introduction of the first M3 based on the E30 3-Series. Even if the road version was an absolute everyday life car fitted with modern technologies; the true homeland of the BMW M3 was the racing course. Powered by a four-cylinder engine with four-valve technology, the BMW M3 brought victory after victory.

Originally only 5000 units were produced, but with a continuous increase of the engine performance from 195 hp up to 238 hp, the production of the M3 went up to 18.000 units in 1991 (M3 Convertible version also included).

The next two M3 generations were also a big success: the second M3 (E36) and the third generation (E46 series) were sold at almost 85.000 units. This success confirmed the strategy of the BMW to transfer the qualities of superior engine to the production models.

After three generations and more than 174,000 sold vehicles the production of the current BMW M3 ran out in the year 2006. But in the year 2007 this successful history is continued with the launch of the fourth generation.

The successor of a legend

In 1992 BMW launched the second generation of the BMW M3, based on the E36 series. For the first time a M3 was powered by a six cylinder engine with an output of 286 hp and a peak torque of 320 pounds-feet.

At the end of 2000, BMW unveiled the third generation of the M3, based on the E46 series. The 3rd generation M3 captivatesus with it’s outstanding achievement, unusual driving qualities and design. Under the hood there was the same six-cylinder engine, but this time with an output of 343 hp.

A very unique model in this generation is the M3 CLS. Powered by an upgraded engine with 360 hp and featuring a radical lightweight construction with the most modern materials like carbon fiber, brings the BMW M3 CSL on a weight per horsepower of 3,85 kg/HP; a value, which opens the entrance to a completely new form of dynamics to this BMW M3.

But the top model of this generation and also the most expensive M3, was a 2001 model presented at the American LeMans Series (ALMS): BMW’S M3 GTR. The car impressed us not only by its appearance, but particularly by its 4.0 litre large V8 engine which produced 460 hp for the racing version 350 hp for the road versions. With a price of approximately 250,000 euro it was an unusually exclusive offer.

2007 saw the introduction of the fourth generation M3, the most powerful M3 ever. The new, 309 kW/420 hp V8 power unit offers enormous muscle and performance at all times. And the aesthetic design of the new car typical once again of BMW M spells out supremacy of the highest standard. The new BMW M3 sets the foundation for continuing an exceptional career in motorsport. So every enthusiast sharing the passion for supreme performance may be sure that this model is able to master even the greatest challenge on and off the race track.
