Every 2007 model year Volkswagen vehicle is equipped with advanced passive and active safety features that can make driving in inclement weather easier and safer. Depending upon the model, technology such as Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP), Engine Braking Assist (EBA), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), and Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) are among the features that will help keep Volkswagen drivers more secure when driving conditions are less than ideal.

Earlier this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed a mandate that all passenger vehicles be equipped with some type of electronic stability control – a feature Volkswagen already offers on its entire lineup. Volkswagen’s Electronic Stabilization Program is standard on the 2007 Eos, GTI, GLI, New Beetle, New Beetle convertible, Passat, Passat wagon and Touareg models, and is available as a $450 option on the Rabbit and the $16,490 entry level Jetta.

ESP can help prevent crashes and rollovers by stabilizing a vehicle at the onset of a skid. Using a variety of sensors, ESP helps stabilize the handling of the car by braking the individual wheels selectively and by automatically adjusting the engine’s output. The system works in conjunction with the anti-lock brakes and traction control systems that are already standard on every Volkswagen model.

Four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes coupled with an Engine Braking Assist system contributes to Volkswagen’s reputation as an innovative leader in safety equipment that can help avoid accidents. An electro-mechanical power steering system can help assist with minor straight-ahead driving adjustments, giving needed assist at low speeds while preserving precise road feel at higher speeds. Anti-Slip Regulation improves driving and steering characteristics by preventing the front wheels from spinning under acceleration. When a difference in driving wheel speed is detected, the system automatically reduces engine torque. Electronic Differential Lock uses the ABS sensors to determine if one wheel is spinning faster than the other. Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution and Hydraulic Brake Assist are additional available features that help to keep drivers and passengers safe.

Additional safety equipment standard on every Volkswagen model includes driver and front passenger front and side thorax airbag supplemental restraints, Side Curtain Protection® on every fixed-roof model, optimized head restraints, Daytime Running Lights (DRL) and three-point safety belts for all seating positions.
