The price for the third car in the Scion line up was announced Friday by Toyota. The car, a five door “urban subcompact” is powered by a 1.8 liter four with dual variable valve timing technology – the first time this has been implemented on a Toyota-built vehicle – producing 128 hp. Transmission choices are either five speed manual or four speed automatic. The car is EPA certified as a Low Emission Vehicle and has economy ratings of 27 city and 33 highway (1 mpg lower for the automatic). Suspension is McPherson struts in front and torsion beams in back.
The manual transmission model will start at a manufacturers suggested retail price of $14,550 and the automatic will have an MSRP of $15,350. In addition, expect a delivery and processing fee of about $620. The new xD is expected to be on sale in August.
Four the fourteen grand, here’s what you get, inside and out:
Sixteen inch wheels mounting 195/60 R 16 tires, disc brakes in front and drum brakes in the rear, plus three choices of wheel covers. The dash incorporates a digital clock, the heater and air conditioning controls and the audio controls. The standard audio system is a 160 watt Pioneer unit with iPod connectivity with a display on the audio unit’s screen providing information from the iPod.
Seating is buckets in the front and a 60/40 fold flat divided seat in the rear. The rear seats have significant front to rear adjustability and are also reclining.
Standard equipment also includes cruise control, power steering, power door locks, power windows, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, tire pressure monitoring system, tilt steering wheel with audio controls, air conditioning, a multi-information display and even a first aid kit.
Optional equipment includes traction control and vehicle stability control systems, as well as a premium sound system that adds the ability to “download ‘skins’ to play on the organic electroluminescent screen,” according to Toyota. The premium system also allows downloading short video clips. 
The car can also be personalized, as can other Scions, with a wide range of accessories available through the Scion Genuine accessories program. Among those which will be available is a new navigation system with a seven inch LCD touch screen and an aero body kits.
