The Goodwood Festival of Speed is only 21 years old. That’s very young when compared to other automotive events; but make no mistake, this annual gathering has grown to become one of the most important racing happenings in the world. The festival attracts not only historic and modern race cars alike, but also a host of past and present drivers to hoon some of the coolest vehicles up the Goodwood hill.

The event is getting better and better with each edition, and 2014 is no exception. With nearly 10 debuts set to take place in West Sussex, England, and with iconic drivers such as Richard Petty, Al Unser, John Surtees and Emerson Fittipaldi having already confirmed their presence, this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed is shaping up to be one hell of a spectacle.

NASCAR’s "King" Petty will arrive to drive his legendary No. 43 Plymouth Belvedere through the course, while Unser will hoon the 1978 Penske Lola-Cosworth racer in which he won his third Indy 500. And that’s only a mere fraction of the action scheduled between June 26th and 29th.

2016 McLaren P1 GTR

The McLaren P1 GTR is arguably the most anticipated debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. Based on the already familiar P1 supercar, the P1 GTR will come in a track-exclusive package consisting of enhanced aerodynamics, an uprated powertrain, and race-spec components. What’s more, with 986 horsepower on tap — 83 more when compared to the road-going version — the GTR is set to become the most powerful McLaren even built. In addition, the GTR will retail from more than $3 million and offered only to customers that have already purchased the standard P1. Make sure you keep your eyes out for the GTR in England, because there’s a big chance you won’t see it again anytime soon.

Honda NSX Will Take on the Hill of Goodwood

The Honda/Acura NSX is yet another supercar waiting to clear its throat while charging up the Goodwood hill. The iconic nameplate is set to make a spectacular comeback after a 10-year hiatus with a V-6 engine and a trio of electric motors under its skin. Making its Goodwood debut even more special is the fact that the original NSX debuted at the inaugural edition of the event back in 1993.

The Q50 Eau Rouge is still at least one year away from revealing itself in production form, but folks at Goodwood will see the prototype make its first ever dynamic appearance. Expect this menacing sedan to do some quick laps up the course and don’t be surprised if it sounds like a Nissan GT-R, thanks to the twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V-6 powerplant that it shares with its Nissan relative.

Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations will Launch a New Model at Goodwood

Jaguar too will unveil something special at Goodwood, but the Brits won’t tell us what it is until the event kicks in. All we know is the vehicle in question has been crafted by the company’s Special Operations team, which means we’re in for quite a treat. Our guess is we’ll take a closer look at the new-old lightweight E-Type the manufacturer is putting together, but a very special, bespoke Jag is a possibility as well. Whatever it is, we’re more than anxious to see and review it.

Drive the VW GTI Roadster Concept at Goodwood

On the digital side of the automotive industry, Volkswagen is jumping in with its brand-new GTI Roadster Concept. We say "virtual" because we’re talking about the same concept car showcased in the latest iteration of the Gran Turismo franchise. The Germans will offer a few lucky fans the chance to drive the concept car up the famous hill-climb course by means of a PlayStation controller. We know each and everyone of you would rather drive the real thing — we’d be signing up for that too — but look on the bright side of things: Gran Turismo 6 is getting a virtual recreation of the Goodwood course.

2014 Peugeot 2008 DKR

This has to be one of the weirdest debut to take place at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Developed for the grueling Dakar rally, the Peugeot 2008 DKR needs more than just a hill-climb course to showcase its skill. But we’re not complaining, at least we get to see this off-roader in action and maybe find out what sort of engine is hiding under that Red Bull-liveried body. Fingers crossed the organizers come up with an off-road course for this beast.

2015 Elemental RP-1

The Elemental RP-1 is far more appropriate to begin its career as a production car at Goodwood. Its open-top body configuration and sports car credentials help it blend perfectly with the rest of the automotive crowd and we just know it won’t go unnoticed.

The vehicles listed above are just a taste of what this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed has to offer. The place will be packed with new and old sports car and race cars, and a heap of other vehicles waiting to rev their engines up hill. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the event, so make sure you stay tuned to TopSpeed for the coverage.
