German tuner gives new Ferrari supercar an upgrade that’s fit for its stature

We may be in the dog days of summer, but for a perennially busy aftermarket tuner like Novitec Rosso, no amount of idle time can make up for creating a tuning program for one of the market’s newest supercars, the Ferrari 488 GTS. That’s exactly what the German tuner did, doing so only two months after unveiling a similar kit for the 488 GTB. Much like the earlier program, Novitec Rosso’s work on the 488 GTS revolves around an engine upgrade that puts some extra muscle to the Ferrari’s 3.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine, resulting in a new output of 772 horsepower and 658 pound-feet of torque.

The numbers are identical to what the tuner was able to get out of the coupe version. Rest assured though, the effects are far different, both from a performance standpoint and from a wind-blowing-your-hair point-of-view. Better yet, the enhancements don’t just end with the engine upgrades. It wouldn’t be a Novitec Rosso tuning kit if it was strictly limited to that. The German tuner is also known for its carbon fiber aero bits and without disappointment, Novitec is also offering a full aerodynamic body kit that’s even been subjected to strenuous wind tunnel testing.

As expected, a new set of wheels is also part of the program and an interior upgrade that’s largely left to the whims and financial might of the customer. In other words, this tuning kit for the Ferrari 488 GTS is a trademark Novitec Rosso program, complete with all the bells and whistles that have come to define the well-established aftermarket company.

The Novitec Rosso program for the Ferrari 488 GTS comes with a well-prepared carbon fiber body kit that the tuner claims went through “laborious wind tunnel testing.” The kit includes a larger front splitter, rocker panels, rear diffuser, and a choice between two spoilers, both of which come with the purpose of improving the supercar’s downforce. On the cosmetic side, a few carbon fiber trim pieces have also been added. Same thing with the black LED side repeaters and a third brake light. They don’t improve the Ferrari’s looks dramatically, but they do make it different. Rounding out the exterior modifications is a new set of 21- and 22- inch forged alloy wheels that are fitted into a hydraulic suspension. The wheels come in two designs too so customers have a choice on which one suits their 488 GTS better.

Speaking of choices, Novitec Rosso’s interior customization for the Ferrari 488 GTS is all about choices as customers are given free reign on how they’d like to dress up the cabin of their Ferraris. In true Novitec fashion, the interior options cover a gamut of premium materials, including leather, Alcantara, and of course, carbon fiber.

As expected, Novitec Rosso didn’t deviate from its tuning method for the 488 GTB. The same N-Tronic electronic control unit was used for this program, albeit coming with just one tuning stage. The tuning module is responsible for altering the engine’s injection and ignition timing and together with a new high-performance exhaust system, the German tuner was able to extract 102 ponies out of the 488 GTS’s 3.9-liter bi-turbo V-8 engine. The result is an output of 772 horsepower and 658 pound-feet of torque, good enough to drop the supercar’s sprint time to 62 mph to just 2.8 seconds to go with a new top speed of 212 mph, an increase of seven mph from the standard 205-mph top speed.

No word yet on pricing so as is often the case in situations like this, interested customers are advised to contact Novitec Rosso directly to get a pricing quote. Since the interior upgrades are personalized, expect the prices to vary depending on what kind of goodies are picked to go into the Ferrari’s cabin.

Since this is one of the first programs dedicated to the Ferrari 488 GTS, let’s take a small detour and line it up against some of the tuning programs received by its coupe counterpart, the 488 GTB. One of the most radical modifications for the 488 GTB comes by way of Mansory, which presented the 4XX Siracusa at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. That program had everything in it, including dramatic exterior and interior modifications. At the heart of it though was an engine upgrade that allowed the supercar’s 3.9-liter bit-turbo V-8 engine to raise its output to 790 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque. That was made possible by an optimized ECU unit and a new sports exhaust system, which also helped the 488 cut its acceleration to 60 mph time to just 2.9 seconds to go with an increased top speed of 211 mph.

Just like Mansory’s 4XX Siracusa tuning program, Alpha-N Performance took some liberties with its tuning package for the 488 GTB’s V-8 spitfire engine. In the end though, the tuner was able to coax 790 horsepower and 635 pound-feet of torque out of that engine, which is right around what you’d expect from a world-class tuner. Sadly, Alpha-N didn’t dive into the specifics of the resulting performance numbers but given the similar numbers with the Novitec Ross and Mansory kits, a sprint time to 60 mph of under three seconds is a certainty, as is a top speed in the neighborhood of 211 mph.

I don’t suppose there are going to be any complaints on this Novitec Rosso program other than a few debates on whether the tuner should have offered more engine upgrade packages like what it did for the coupe version of the 488. That said, 772 horsepower and 658 pound-feet of torque are nothing to sneeze at, especially if it comes with a top speed of 212 mph. That’s f-a-s-t understood in any language.

  • Leave it
    • Could be pricey
    • Just one engine stage?
    • Wait for other tuners to come out with their programs for the 488 GTS
