There are a lot of different directions you can go with this configurator

The highly anticipated debut of the 2019 BMW 8 Series finally happened this week, and as has been the case recently, the luxury sedan’s online configurator quickly followed. Online configurators have been fun exercises for us. We get to create our own version of the new model and spec it right down to the most specific of details. Far too often, our creations end up differing from another, but that’s precisely the purpose of these configurators. You create what you want regardless of the opinions of other people. In the end, you live by your creation, and you show it off to the rest of the world. And so it is, our spec of the 2019 BMW 8 Series.

Choosing a color for my BMW M850i xDrive Coupe means that I’m already getting a matching set of tires to go with it

We’re gonna start configuring my BMW 8 Series by picking the trim and the engine that’s going to sit under its hood. This is an easy choice. I’m going with the M850i xDrive Coupe and the 4.4-liter, twin-turbo, V-8 that comes with it. Choosing this version gives me 523 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque to play with as I try to replicate BMW’s claim that the sedan can hit 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.

Now that we’ve settled that, it’s time to pick the color of my M850i xDrive Coupe. It was a hard choice, but ultimately, I’m going with the Barcelona Blau color. It’s not as flashy as the Sunset Orange and Sonic Speed Blue finishes, but it does draw you into it. There’s something cool and relaxing about the shade, too, something I don’t see in any of the other color finishes with the exception of Mineralweiss, which happens to just be a less white version of white. No thanks there.

Unfortunately, choosing a color for my BMW M850i xDrive Coupe means that I’m already getting a matching set of tires to go with it. The good news is that the wheels I’m getting with the Barcelona Blau color are 20-inch Jet Black alloys. You’re not going to catch me complaining about it because I like how the stealthy wheels match with the soft shade of blue on the car’s body. It’s a slick combination.

The interior options don’t make the decision-making process any easier because there are plenty of interesting choices here

The interior options don’t make the decision-making process any easier because there are plenty of interesting choices here. But I’m going to stick with keeping the blue theme intact. I’m picking the Merino Nachtblau extended leather treatment from BMW Individual. It’s a darker shade of blue than what I’m looking for, but in some ways, it works out beautifully because I can use it as a sweet contrast to the light blue shade that I’m using on the car’s body. I am a little torn on the decoration inserts, but I will stick to my guns and get the Escher Maser graub noble wood execution with the inlay marquetry. There’s no sense using any shade of brown in this section given the treatment that I’m going for. So, yeah, the Esche Maser treatment is for me and my (virtual) 850i xDrive Coupe. It provides a consistent look that embraces the luxuriousness attached to the 8 Series.

The special equipment section gave me a lot of headaches, largely because I had to choose components that would complement the M aero kit that is already featured on the model that I chose. There’s the temptation to add an M Carbon outdoor pack, but I’m not going to do it. Instead, I’m adding the exterior chrome line and the M carbon roof as finishing touches to the exterior of my super luxury performance sedan.

Likewise, I’m going to go a little crazy on the interior equipment. Since money isn’t an issue, I’m adding the crystal finish to the interior elements, the Heat Comfort package, and the integrated universal remote control.

I’m also upgrading my Driving Assistant Pack to the Professional version and the Parking Assistant Pack to the Plus version. Oh, and those laser lights? You can be sure I’m throwing those in, too.

Sadly, I couldn’t get access to how much my BMW M850i xDrive Coupe is going to cost because of a “technical error” in the configurator that prevents it from accessing its calculator.

That’s not going to matter because the version I created not only looks incredible, but it’s also dripping in technology and state-of-the-art features that give the 8 Series the potential to become one of the best luxury performance coupes in the business.
