That doesn’t make the open-top Vantage Roadster a slouch, mind you

Largely based on the Vantage coupé, the Aston Martin Vantage Roadster - that’s right, it’s not called the Volante anymore as you and I expected, but simply Roadster - receives the same 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 sourced from AMG but instead of a fixed roof, it packs the quickest fabric top ever made.

As every other Aston Martin out there, the Vantage Roadster doesn’t come cheap. You’ll have to scoop up at least $161,000 if you live in the US of A, €157,000 in Germany, and about £127,000 in the U.K. That’s $11,000, €3,000, and £6,000, respectively, on top of the coupé model’s starting sticker.

Tell me more about that soft top

It takes under seven seconds to fold or unfold the Vantage Roadster’s soft top, says Aston Martin.

More precisely, the compact Z-fold mechanism lowers the top in 6.7 seconds and raises it in 6.8 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph (50 km/h). Trunk space, however, goes down from 350 liters (12.3 cu ft) in the Vantage coupé to 200 liters (7 cu ft) for the cabriolet, which Aston Martin claims is still enough to haul a full-size golf bag and the adjacent accessories.

On the performance front, the drop-top Vantage has the exact same mill as the coupé, with the exact same power and torque credentials: 504 horsepower (510 PS) and 685 Nm (505 pound-feet) of torque. Bolted to the engine is the familiar eight-speed automatic from ZF.

When it comes to top speed and acceleration, the Roadster is actually slower than the coupé - that’s because the extra reinforcements added to the chassis account for a weight bump of 60 kilos (132 pounds). With the roof raised, the Roadster reaches 190 mph (305 km/h) with a 0-60 charge consumed in 3.7 seconds. The coupé needs 3.5 seconds to clear the same interval on its way to a top speed of 195 mph (314 km/h).

Gimmick-wise, a lot of bits and bobs are simply carried over from the fixed-roof Vantage, such as:

  • adaptive damping
  • dynamic stability control
  • torque vectoring
  • e-Diff (electronic rear diff)

In addition to those, the Roadster received additional tweaks for the rear dampers, its own adaptive damping software, and unique ESP calibration. Customers can still pick between three chassis and three powertrain modes: Sport, Sport+, and Track.

Aston Martin estimates that the first Vantage Roadster deliveries will reach customers in the second quarter of 2020, but the good news is you can book yours right now. You’ll also get a chance to see it in the metal at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show next month.

Tudor’s first encounter with cars took place when he was only a child. Back then, his father brought home a Trabant 601 Kombi and a few years later, a Wartburg 353. At that time, he was too young to know how they worked and way too young to drive them, but he could see one thing – each of them had a different ethos and their own unique personality. As time went on, he started seeing that in other cars as well, and his love for the automobile was born.  Read More
