This is it, ladies and gentlemen: the new 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupé, scheduled to make its market debut in October 2020. And here's all the essential info about it because, let's face it, there's more to it than that gaping front grille we've seen in so many leaks prior to this official unveil.

BMW 4 Series Coupe - On the Outside

Yes, it has the bucktooth grille. So let's just get over it, as a lot of internet space will be dedicated to comments on this particular design cue and why BMW went ahead with it exactly as previewed by the Concept 4 prototype. That said, here's how BMW motivates its existence on the new 4er:

"As a defining element of the front end, the grille stands confidently at its centre. With its upright kidneys connected in the centre, it reprises a design feature from the company’s past – one shared with legendary brand classics, such as the BMW 328 and BMW 3.0 CSi – and adds its own modern twist."

It's also wider at 1,852 millimeters (27 millimeters more than the previous 4er) and taller at 1,383 millimeters (6 millimeters on top of the outgoing 4 Series). Wheelbase, too, takes a hike by 44 mm and now measures 2,851 millimeters.

Elsewhere, the 4er looks like a proper sports car born and bred in Bavaria. It's got your short front overhangs, look coupé-y doors, and that extremely desirable flowing roofline we're seeing (unfortunately) on more and more SUVs these days.

Right from the first peek, you'll instantly recognize the 2021 4 Series' interior as that of a modern-day BMW. There's no mistake here. Mind you, the 4er is supposed to be a lot fancier than the 3 Series and below, and as far as press photos go, that's what we're getting here.

Among the main highlights here we can lay out the following:

-* sports seats

-* sports leather steering wheel (standard)

-* acoustic glass windscreen

-* Start/Stop button on the center console, near the gear selector

-* rear seats fitted with read restraints

On top of these features, customers can tick the box next to BMW's M Sport package Pro. What it does, basically, is apply the finishing touches that hint even more at the new 4er's sportiness and it comes to complement the M Sport treatment:

-* larger front air intakes

-* 18-inch M light-alloys

-* redesigned rear apron

-* M Sport suspension

-* knee pads on the sides of the center console

-* Cerium Grey metallic body paint

-* M Carbon exterior components

with the likes of:

-* 19-inch M alloy wheels

-* eight-speed Steptronic Sport gearbox

-* rear spoiler

-* Harman Kardon sound system

-* engine noises fed into the cabin

BMW 4 Series Coupe - Engines

The unit is also gifted with 48V mild-hybrid tech that adds to the mix a starter-generator providing an extra boost of 11 horsepower (11 kilowatts).

Power reaches all four wheels through an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox and from there to the asphalt via BMW's xDrive setup. In this attire, the M440i xDrive Coupé needs 4.5 seconds to zap through the 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) interval on its way to a top speed of 250 kph (155 mph).

Every model is fitted as standard with the aforementioned eight-speed Steptronic transmission and diesels get the mild-hybrid tech, too. Oh, and the gearbox gets a Sprint function, which we're told that fiddles with engine and shift mapping for "maximum dynamism to mid-range acceleration and overtaking maneuvers." Essentially, you'll be able to overpass the car in front quickly, thus remaining for less time on the oncoming lane.

BMW 4 Series Coupe - Technology

As you'd imagine, there's a lot of tech baked into the new 4 Series. For starters, the standard multimedia setup is the Live Cockpit Plus based on an 8.8-inch display operated via the iDrive rotary joystick and an instrument cluster wrapped around a 5.1-inch color screen.

BMW's Operating System 7 is also present inside the new 4er. The icing on the cake, however, is the BMW Live Cockpit Professional which mixes a 12.3-inch screen and a 10.25-inch display. It's also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

BMW 4 Series Coupé - Final Word

If you ask us, the jury is still out on the bucktooth grille. By that we mean that we are still waiting to see the 4 Series in the metal before striking the final judgement, however, BMW is well aware of the fact that this design choice will get the people talking and generate a lot of hype not just for the 4 Series but for the brand itself.

In all fairness, nobody expects the 4 Series to sell like hotcakes - not to the amount the 3 Series or the 5 Series do - so besides it acting as a marketing tool that gets people talking, that radical front end might get what we like to call the Cybertruck effect, as in customers might actually want it because it's new, courageous to some extent, and to some, quite revolting.

We do have one question, though, and that's whether the incoming M4 will get it too. We guess we'll just have to wait and see.
