Daimler debuts its very first all-electric Maybach, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS concept, at the IAA show in Munich. This SUV is a glimpse of what the production car will look like.

Overview

The Maybach version of the EQS SUV was formally confirmed at Mercedes’ electric strategy announcement back in July 2021, and a first teaser image of the vehicle was also presented at the event. Now, we finally get to see the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV for what it is, an ultra-luxurious variant of the regular crossover EQS, which is yet to be revealed.

The SUV is based on Daimler's modular architecture for premium automobiles, which is already used by the Mercedes EQS sedan and its future SUV variant, set to go into production in 2022, before the Maybach variant. Mercedes claims a WLTP range of 370 miles, on a single charge.

Exterior

The Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS clearly draws inspiration from the Vision Ultimate Luxury concept shown in 2018. Unsurprisingly, the design features the sub-trademark brand's two-tone finish, seen here in Obsidian Black on top, and Zircon Red Metallic on the bottom and separated by a narrow chrome strip. The car features a number of elements that highlight its exceptional craftsmanship, fitting of this Luxury brand. The front end is reminiscent of the radiator grille on a gas-powered Maybach. The individual diamond-block front lighting headlights with a pattern that represents creative interlacing of the Maybach logo look like whiskers, giving the vehicle, its very own distinctive front facia.

The Maybach crest can be found on the C pillar and the pillars of the door frames. The chrome trim surrounding the side windows, the strip of chrome running along with the hood, as well as the substantial black-rimmed wheel arches, represent the brand's confidence. The 24-inch wheels also mimic the shape of other existing Maybach vehicles. The smooth profile and the recessed door handles meanwhile, aid in improving the aerodynamic efficiency.

Interior

Step inside into one of the best Maybach interiors ever. The Maybach EQS has room for four. The front seats are comparable to those seen in the Mercedes EQS. The front and rear seats are linked by what Daimler refers to as a "floating console," which includes storage areas, folding tables, a mini-refrigerator, cup holders, and a vase that can hold flowers. Other highlights include the Yoke-like contemporary steering unit, as seen on the new Model S Plaid, embossed seats with slender backrests, and rose gold inlays all draw attention to the inside. The door cards have interesting textile inlays, and the floor is coated with faux-fur. The SUV also features automatic doors for front and rear passengers.

As far as technology is concerned, as with the EQS, the dashboard is dominated by three screens. The MBUX Hyperscreen infotainment system, which is nothing but a giant curving screen, extends from pillar to pillar. The three screens are held together by a glass cover. Apart from the driver’s display, the front passenger also has access to a 12.3" screen in front that controls, various functions, and the entertainment system. The center high-resolution display gives information on the flow of electric power, consumption, range, as well as directions for a navigation system that includes route planning.

Conclusion

The Maybach brand is commemorating its 100th anniversary and is well-positioned for the future. The electric counterparts EQS and EQS SUV, like the S-Class and GLS, will be available as luxury Maybach variants in the future, as will the S-Class and GLS. Daimler has yet to provide any information regarding the powertrain or the battery.

The concept car on display at the IAA in Munich is still in the early stages of development. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV will be introduced in two years i.e 2023, while the regular EQS will be available earlier. It will be shown in early 2022 and then go on sale in the second half of 2022.
