It joins a long list of law enforcement vehicles

Ford has a very long history of providing law enforcement vehicles. It all started back in 1992 when the Crown Victoria served as the first Police Interceptor, and continued over the next years with models like the Taurus and the Fusion. Today, Ford has a wide fleet of police cars, including the Explorer, the Expedition, the F-150, and the Transit. As we all know the future will be electric and so will be the future of the American police fleet. Ford is currently preparing its recently launched F-150 Lightning for local police duties. For the new job, the model will receive a few updates and a new name: F-150 Lightning Pro SSV.

Just like the standard F-150 Lightning model, the SSV version will be powered by a dual-motor setup and a four-wheel-drive system. Ford will offer the police version with the standard-range battery that ensures a range of 230 miles. The extended battery version will be offered as an alternative. The standard version will deliver 452 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque and will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in about 5 seconds. The models equipped with the extended battery will be even faster and should sprint from 0 to 60 mph in only 4 seconds.

What other updates will the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV offer?

The F-150 Lightning Pro SSV will be more than just about the powertrain. Its interior will also offer all the equipment required for police duty. First, the cloth seats are specially designed with reduced bolsters. This will ease access into the truck for the holstered officers. The truck also comes equipped with easy-to-clean vinyl rear seats and vinyl flooring, plus an upfit-friendly reinforced instrument panel top tray. All models will also be offered with standard 12-inch digital cluster screen and 12-inch landscape-style touchscreen on the center stack.

The F-150 Lightning Pro SSV will also be part of Ford Pro’s platform of connected vehicles. This platform will help the police department to manage when vehicles are charged and serviced, thus reducing cost and improving uptime.

The model will be available later this summer. In order to help police departments buy the electric truck, Ford is offering new financing solutions for municipals, including options for charging solutions.

“We’re proud to offer America’s first electric police pickup truck to local government customers who can use the truck’s game-changing technology to help improve their productivity,” said Nate Oscarson, Ford Pro national government sales manager. “Pro Power Onboard can serve as a mobile power source2 to light up evening accident scenes on the highway, the electric powertrain helps to potentially reduce costs associated with fuel and scheduled maintenance needs3 and the Mega Power Frunk provides extra lockable storage on top of purpose-built police additions our customers have come to expect from the leader in police vehicles.”
