Motor Trend is back at it with the World’s Greatest Drag Race. The annual event pits 12 of the fastest and most powerful cars in the world in the ultimate test of acceleration. All 12 performance machines were present at the Vandenberg Air Force Base to see which among them can take the checkered flag in the latest installment of the World’s Greatest Drag Race.

You’re not going to believe this, but the World’s Greatest Drag Race involves 12 cars with a combined 6,000 horsepower among them. Ok, sarcasm aside, it’s hard not to paint this picture without going a bit overboard in describing the type of machinery that attended Motor Trend’s event at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

With a pristine 15,000-foot runway to play with, Motor Trend bought along a McLaren 720S, a Porsche 911 GT2 RS, and a Dodge Challenger RT Scat Pack 1320 to play around with. Those three cars, by themselves, are enough to make for a compelling race, but the magazine wasn’t done.

A Honda Civic Type R, Lamborghini Huracan Performante, and a BMW M5 also showed up. That’s an eclectic mix of performance cars coming from three different countries. Japan, Italy, and Germany are well-represented among these three performance machines.

That’s six cars already, and we just made it to the halfway mark of total participants in the race. It also had the Kia Stinger GT, Audi TT RS, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Aston Martin Vantage, Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2, and yes, even the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio SUV, which, as many of you know, is no slouch itself.

After a lot of pre-race hype — and there was Motor Trend of it in this video, the race eventually unfolded with the favorites — the 720S, 911 GT2 RS, and Huracan Performante — flashing their form. Ultimately, it was the McLaren 720S that came out on top, clocking a quarter-mile time of 10.1 seconds at 141.5 mph. The Porsche 911 GT2 RS was a whisker off the pace at second with a time of 10.3 seconds at 139.3 mph. As expected, the Lamborghini Huracan Performante completed the podium with a time of 10.4 seconds at 134.5 mph.

From there, the quarter-mile times drop, beginning with the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, which grabbed fourth place comfortably ahead of the BMW M5 with a time of 10.8 seconds at 133.1 mph. Bimmer’s mid-size luxury performance sedan made a good showing, too, clocking in a time of 11.1 seconds at 126.7 mph.

The Aston Martin Vantage finished sixth with a time of 11.7 seconds at 120.2 mph. Interestingly, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, by far the heaviest model in this race by virtue of its SUV status, almost nipped the Vantage with a time of 11.8 seconds at 116.1 mph. That said, the Stelvio QV was definitely quicker than five other cars in this race, beginning with the Audi TT RS (12.0 seconds at 114.6 mph), Dodge Challenger RT Scat Pack 1320 (12.1 seconds at 115 mph), and the Ford Mustang GT (12.6 seconds at 113.5 mph)

The Kia Stinger GT and the Honda Civic Type-R brought up the rear with quarter-mile times of 13.1 seconds at 106.9 mph and 13.7 seconds at 105.9 mph, respectively.
