Throwing trash from your car to the road is never a good idea because it’s disgusting, but throwing nails in the road to punish speeding drivers? That’s a whole new level of lunacy. A 75-year-old man from Minnesota is finding that out the hard way after getting arrested for his self-righteous act of vigilantism. The man, identified as Joseph Kurimay, now faces five years in prison to go with a fine of $10,000.

There are many schools of thought regarding the pros and cons of vigilante acts, and almost none of them are justified. What Joseph Kurimay has been accused of doing over the last six months definitely qualifies as a criminal act more than a crusade against reckless drivers.

According to WCCO News, drivers in Buffalo, Minnesota have been showing up at local tire shops with the same issue: punctured tires caused by 1.5-inch, steel-capped masonry nails. No one knew at that time where the nails were coming from, but the frequency of these occurrences ended with one victim growing suspicious after a garage employee mentioned that “dozens” of other cars had struck the same type of nail in the same area.

After being alerted of the possible criminal act, the Buffalo Police Department launched an investigation and eventually matched Kurimay’s credit card information and surveillance footage of him purchasing boxes of the same type of nails from a local home improvement store on four different occasions.

Things took a turn for the worse for the 75-year-old when police officers paid his home a visit, only to find “three partial pieces of nails” in the road outside his house. Eventually, the officers returned with a warrant to search his property, and after pleading ignorance to the crime, officers found “mostly empty” boxes of nails in his garage, forcing Kurimay to fess up and admit to being behind the mysterious tire punctures. Like a man with a warped sense of justice, Kurimay blamed the government’s inaction, saying that he was forced to take the matter into his own hands after his complaint of multiple drivers speeding past his house fell on supposedly deaf ears.

Regardless of his intentions, Kurimay is now facing a long stint in jail for his crimes, proving that two wrongs don't make a right. And, to cap this story off with a sprinkling of irony, the 75-year-old has received several speeding tickets of his own in recent years.
