A Father In A C7 Z06 ’Vette Takes On His Son In A R35 Nissan GT-R

Can the heavier AWD GT-R outgun the more powerful RWD C7 Z06?

It’s always nice to hear about a father-son duo showing up at the drag strip with a nice custom build. This ’66 Chevelle is a prime case in point, but when you bring two cars out, well, you can go head-to-head.

I had no idea this GT-R vs Z06 duel was a father-son pairing, to begin with, until I looked at the comments section of this video that wheel put out. Now, once again, I can’t confirm the specs, so let’s look at the baseline numbers and you can work your way from there.

Daddy’s C7 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

In the red corner, we have this fiery red C7 Z06. Under the hood lies a supercharged 6.2-L V-8 mill that puts out 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. The Chevy tips the scales at 3560 lbs

In the right lane was a fiery red Chevy Z06 Vette. The Z06, of course, is one of the most potent cars in the Corvette lineup. Under the hood of a stock car lies a 6.3-liter supercharged V-8 engine that produces 650 ponies and 650 pound-feet of torque. The Chevy sends all its power to the rear wheels either via a seven-speed manual or an eight-speed auto. The Z06 tips the scales at 3,560 pounds.

Son’s Nissan R35 GT-R

Sitting in the adjacent lane was what looked like a 2013 R35 GT-R. Under the hood, you’ve got a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine that puts out 545 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque in its stock guise. Thrown in a few mods and you know what Godzilla can do. Power is sent to all four corners via a six-speed automated gearbox. The GT-R weighs 3,829 pounds.

So while the Vette is more powerful, the GT-R does pack all-wheel-drive traction, which should, in theory, weigh it down. But, if there’s one thing that Godzilla can do, that’d be getting off the line like nothing else. Also, it’s highly unlikely that this GT-R is stock. So will those extra pounds make a difference to the GT-R’s pace out on the track? Let’s find out.

The Races

I know this because the son, Jonathan commented on this video put out by the wheels youtube channel. How I wish I knew more about the exact specs like additional mods, tires, etc

Now, despite giving his dad the hit of a couple of seconds on all three occasions, Jonathan in the GT-R was able to keep it pretty tight between himself and his dad in the Z06.

I've given my dad every head start advantage I can think of. My car is very consistent and when the air is good runs a mid-10sec 1/4mile. His corvette is all over the place. Density altitude from this night was 8800ft, so nobody was too fast that night - Jonathan Flossic

Here are the results:

But despite this, the Z06 wasn’t at its best to hold off the GT-R

So, the GT-R gave the Vette a tough time. But, the altitude and the lower atmospheric pressure at the Bandimere Speedway, up in Morrison, Colorado was clearly having an effect on the overall boost and the way that the Z06 performed. Turbocharged cars, meanwhile, aren’t as adversely affected by elevation changes.

This could have been a closer duel if it was at sea level. Apart from that, to make a fair assessment of this face-off, more information regarding the mods and tires (slicks, drag radials), etc would definitely have come in handy.
