Of course there is a catch, but for the record, the SE did beat the Model 3

There is no doubt that Tesla vehicles are fast. But, Tesla offers certain modes that let you cruise slowly and in a sedate manner when you’re not in the mood to just sprint off the line. The folks at InsideEVs decided to use this ‘loophole’ to pit the Model 3 Performance against a Mini SE. It goes unsaid that the Model 3 will win the race, but what if it is switched into the Chill Mode? Check out this video of the Model 3 take on the Mini SE twice in two different modes.

How Did The Race Pan Out?

The folks in this video pit both the cars against each other twice. In the first race, the Tesla Model 3 Performance leaves the Mini Cooper SE in the dust. The latter was nowhere in sight when the Model 3 reached the quarter-mile. So, to make things a little competitive, the Model 3’s driver put the car into Chill Mode before going up the second time.

You’d expect the result to be the same, albeit a smaller margin, but the Mini SE never let the Model 3 go past it.

The cute little hatch pulled strong and went all the way till the finish line and managed to defeat the Tesla. Whether you like it or not, the records will say that the Mini Cooper SE defeated the Model 3 Performance. We’d like an asterisk next to this, though.

How Are These Cars Spec’d?

Speaking about the specs, the Mini Cooper SE features an electric motor that produces 170 horses and 184 pound-feet of torque. It is powered by a 42 kWh battery pack that can drive 153 miles on a single charge. Power is sent to the front wheels. The powertrain takes the SE from naught to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds before hitting a high of 93 mph.

The Tesla Model 3 Performance comes with a motor on each axle that sends power to all the four wheels. It is packed with a 75 kWh battery pack in the floor that can deliver up to 322 miles on a full charge, according to Tesla. It makes around 580 ponies and 481 pound-feet of twist that helps it gallop to 62 mph from a standstill in just 3.2 seconds and go all the way up to 145 mph before losing steam (pun intended).

Final Thoughts

Wondering what the Chill Mode is? It’s self-explanatory. The Model 3 dials back the performance to a large extent and you can cruise comfortably and sedately and also extract maximum range from the battery. And, it’s not a Mode 3 specific feature; it’s available on the Model S and Model X as well.

Coming back to the video, the Model 3 in Chill Mode against the Mini Cooper SE feels like a dad who is letting his little one win on purpose. Well, the things you do to make others happy. Duh! A fun video nevertheless. What are your thoughts about it? Share them with us in the comments section below.
