Earlier this year, we reported that the next-generation 2023 BMW M2 is too fat and too heavy to be equipped with their M xDrive all-wheel drive (AWD) system. As the M2 migrates to the new Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform, after all, the compact performance coupe is expected to gain more weight. This latest leaked document, however, seems to contradict the statements made by BMW M’s engineers, because it reveals that an M2 with M xDrive is coming out after all.

Will the BMW M2 Have AWD?

The leaked document comes courtesy of Bimmerpost, which showcases the M2’s available M xDrive system. The way it works is very similar to the M4, which is unsurprising since the two high-performance coupes will share the same basic architecture and drivetrain. For the most part, the M2 will send its power to the rear wheels. It’s only when a slip is detected that the system will add power to the front axle. This is on top of the five drive modes that the G87 BMW M2 will come with.

BMW's xDrive AWD Can Handle TONS of Power

You bet! Interestingly, the document mentions that the M xDrive AWD system is capable of handling up to 1,300 Nm (959 pound-feet) of torque, which is way more than what even the limited-edition and more potent M4 CSL produces. This means that the drivetrain is capable of handling more torque, thus living room for performance upgrades in the future, not just for the M2, but for other BMW M cars using this driveline.

Earlier in June, BMW Blog interviewed engineers and executives from BMW and asked whether an AWD M2 is coming. Back then, they said that the migration to the CLAR platform will make the M2 already too heavy to accommodate an AWD system. After all, the BMW M240i already tips the scales at 3,519 pounds, with the xDrive variant pushing that weight up to 3,871 lbs. The existence of this leaked document suddenly brings to mind whether the folks at BMW M have suddenly changed their mind and decided to build an AWD M2 after all.

It must be noted, however, that this leaked document does not yet serve as confirmation or an official statement from BMW that an M2 with M xDrive will be released. What we can confirm at this point is that the BMW M2 will also be powered by the same 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six that's found in the M4, albeit slightly detuned. Nevertheless, we're only just a few months away from the reveal of the next-generation M2, which is expected to debut in October.
