• A New Lexus Trademark Hints At A New EV With an Unmentionable Body Style

Lexus Could Be Building a New EV, and It Might Bring an All-New Body Style Into the Company’s Lineup

LISTEN 02:56

Remember the Lexus LF-30 Concept that was revealed back in 2019? It was a futuristic concept with extreme styling and what you might expect from Lexus some 30-40 years from now. Even the cabin gave off the aura of a spaceship, so it was pretty clear that it wouldn’t enter production anytime soon. However, a new trademark filed by Lexus in the U.S., Europe, and Australia for the RZ 450e name, could hint that at least some of its DNA is about to head into production. Obviously, the “e” in the name means it will be an EV – one of the many that the company will offer by 2025 – but what kind of vehicle will it be?

If there’s anything we can all agree about when it comes to Lexus, it’s that its naming structure makes sense. Each model’s name is a clear indication of what the car is. The RC and LC, for example, are coupes (notice the "c" in the name). Meanwhile, the ES, LS, and IS (notice the S) are sedans. The UX, EX, and GX (notice the X) are crossovers. Lexus’ new trademark, however, is for the model name RZ 450e.

What in the world is a Lexus RZ? Well, that's actually a good question, but based on the company's naming structure, it sure isn't going to be a coupe, sedan, or crossover.

The best guess at this point is that Lexus isn’t only looking to add a new electric vehicle to its lineup, but a new body style as well. Given the current trend of the automotive market, a crossover or SUV would definitely make more sense than a car, but we’re guessing the Lexus RZ is actually going to be a crossover-coupe or coupe-SUV – essentially a high-riding coupe akin to that of the BMW X4 and X6 or Mercedes GLC and GLE Coupe. Yeah, you know – the ugly cars that certain people seem to love for one reason or another.

On that note, it only makes sense that Lexus would start expanding its EV lineup too. By 2025, the company is planning to offer every model in its lineup with an electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain by the half-way mark of this decade. The process is already well underway, with the Lexus UX 300e hitting the market in Japan, China, and Europe in November 2019.

I wouldn’t hold out hope for the RZ 450e to look too much like the LF-30 Concept that you see here, but we’re guessing that at least a few bits of DNA will be found in whatever this vehicle ends up looking like. If you jack up the suspension just a bit, the LF-30 wouldn’t be all that far off from being a crossover-coupe, and it certainly doesn’t match any body style currently in the brand’s lineup.
