Musk replied to a disgruntled Tesla fan when he was expressing his dilemma over how he wants to own the Cybertruck but his better half doesn’t. Amidst this banter, Elon Musk said out of the blue that “Plaid Cybertruck is what I’ll drive.” Since it’s Musk that we’re talking about, you can consider this as a confirmation on the Plaid Cybertruck. Didn’t see that one coming, did you?

Can We Call The Plaid Cybertruck a Hypertruck?

We first heard about the Plaid powertrain in the new Roadster. In the case of the Roadster, the Plaid mode helped the car take off from 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds. When the Cybertruck was launched, it was estimated that the Plaid powertrain could produce 800 horses and 1,000 pound-feet of torque. Just like the Plaid-powered Model S and X, the Cybertruck will have one motor on the front axle and two in the rear.

The Plaid setup will help increase the truck's off-road abilities by a huge margin and opens a lot of possibilities. While the standard variants of the Cybertruck could feature just the locking differential, the Plain powertrain equipped in the Cybertruck could come with torque vectoring as well.

The Plaid-powered Model S took to the Nurburgring recently and crushed the Porsche Taycan with a lap time 20 seconds shorter than its Stuttgart rival. These, however, are unofficial lap timings.

Will It Be A Fast Performer Or An Off-Road Beast?

Plaid has always been about performance, so we’re going with that. But, you can’t rule out the possibility of an off-road-oriented variant going by the same name. The market for off-road trucks is rapidly growing and Tesla will stay in the hunt, too. This would require even stronger approach and departure angles, a beefier suspension system, wider tires, better ground clearance, and so on.
