There’s hardly been a more consistent sports car over the years than the Porsche 911. The 964-generation, in particular, made between 1989 and 1993 is one of the most sought-after generations, especially in its ClubSport RS and Turbo variants. However, there was a peculiar situation in 1993. The last 93 examples of the Porsche 964 had remained in inventory and the Porsche 993 was due. The only option was to make them more outlandish-looking, faster, and exclusive. Enter the 1994 Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6 S – arguably the most sought-after version of the 964 and this particular one, listed for sale on “RM Soeheby's”, is even more special than the rest.
Out of those 93 last-batch 964s, Porsche spun off a couple of different variants. The US got 39 cars, with the X85 designation. European and other international markets got at least 27 cars, dubbed X84, while Japan got only 10, wearing the X83 designation. The one here is of those 10 cars, intended for the Japanese market. All 10 X83 versions featured the “Flachbau” or slant nose, similar to the 930 slant nose and the 935 race car. In addition, all X83s were finished in silver.
This particular Porsche 964 X83 is number three out of 10. It was imported into the U.S. back in 2014 and was listed at RM Sotheby’s in 2018. The bid reached $420,000, but the car did not sell. The car comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a matching numbers drivetrain, and 74,532 km (46,312 miles) on the odometer, which is only slightly more than what it was back in 2018. The current bid is $430,000 and is expected to go to around $500,000 - $650,000 - a steep price indeed, but absolutely worth paying for one of the rarest, most exclusive, Porsche 911s ever made.
