Big Alfa Romeo Sports sedans don’t really exist today, with the last important model that comes to mind being the 166 that was produced between 1996 and 2007. But, what if Alfa Romeo, now under the leadership of Stellantis, decided it wanted to forget about the SUV segment for a moment and compete with the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class, and even the Audi A6 or Maserati Ghibli? Well, believe it or not, an uncited report is claiming this could very well happen, and it could happen sooner than you’d expect.

2025 – The Year Alfa Romeo Steps Back Into The Ring With the Big Boys?

Spanish automotive site, Motor.es, is reporting that a big new sedan wearing an Alfa Romeo badge is slatted for a 2025 reveal. This news comes via an uncited source, but it should be noted that Motor.es has been accurate from time to time in the past. It would also makes sense given the fact that both the Giulietta and 4C have been sent to a better place (maybe a place where people will actually buy them?)

Jokes aside, this new large sedan would ride on the Giorgio platform, which is the same bits that underpin both the Giulia and the Stelvio. There’s also a good chance that some DNA will be brought over from bother Citroen and Peugeot since these brands are also now under the same umbrella that is Stellantis. So, can a big sedan really be successful? Well, it will come long after the Tonale SUV and at least one other model that’s currently in development. It will also be available with a thirst for gasoline or as a plug-in hybrid, while an all-electric version of the large sedan will make its way into the public eye within a couple of years, so around 2027.

If the new Alfa Romeo sedan is going to compete, however, it needs to come out of the gate hard. In entry-level form – probably petrol-only – the new sedan needs to beat out the BMW 530i, which currently comes with a 2.0-liter that’s good for 248 horsepower, 257 pound-feet of torque, and a 5.9-second sprint to 60 mph. The 540i, on the other hand, pumps out some 335 horsepower and 331 pound-feet from a 3.0-liter inline-six. The plug-in hybrid would rival the 530e, which has the same 2.0-liter as the 530, but with 288 horsepower, 257 pound-feet of torque and an electric motor. It can get to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. Eventually, BMW will have an all-electric i5 which will compete with the electric Alfa Romeo Sedan.

Here’s the catch, though. If the new Alfa Romeo sedan is going to compete with the 5 Series, it needs to be priced appropriately too. The basic 530i carries a price tag of $54,200 while the 530e comes in at $59,600. The 540i with AWD comes out to $61,750, making it the most expensive short of the M550i which Alfa probably won’t compete with right away. This means the new Alfa Romeo sedan either needs to be priced somewhere between $55,000 and $62,000 or it needs to offer something that makes it worth paying a premium for. If not, it’ll probably be short lived.
