Lamborghini had built a little over 300 off-road trucks in previous century, and one of them is up for grabs now!

When we talk about Lamborghini’s history, the Miura, Countach, the 350 GT, and the Espada come to mind. One model, however, that barely makes it to the conversation is the LM002 – the company’s off-road truck.

This may come as a surprise for the non-Lamborghini fanboys, but yes, the Italian automaker produced an off-road truck in the past. Lamborghini made the LM002 between 1986 and 1993 and, surprisingly, only 328 examples were built. Of these, 49 were built for the U.S. market. Now, one of them has arrived at Bring-a-Trailer’s auction and we can’t stop admiring it.

A Little Background On This Example

This particular LM002 is currently in the States, but it isn’t one produced for the American market. The truck was reportedly imported from Japan to Hawaii in 1991 by an Audi/Volkswagen dealership on the island of Oahu.

The previous owner purchased the truck and relocated it to the Washington State in 1992. He had the LM002 for 27 years and drove it occasionally (it has just 2500 miles on the odo). In 2018, the selling dealer acquired the truck.

What’s So Special About The LM002?

On the outside, the truck is finished in black shade and looks exquisite. This four-door model comes with a short, open rear bed as well. Up front, it features a long hood that has air intakes for the big engine to breathe. The round headlights and non-existent bumper scream of retro styling. There are brush guards finished in silver to break the black shade monotony.

This LM002 rides on factory 17-inch eight-lug wheels wrapped in 345/60 section Pirelli Scorpion tires that were developed specifically for the LM002.

The tailgate comes with a full-sized spare tire and swings downwards to allow access to a removable storage compartment, diamond-plated bed, and rear jump seats. Lifting it back up must be quite a task! There is also custom pin-striping on the front, rear, and sides.

On the inside, the truck is finished in off-white leather upholstery on the four bucket seats. Even the door panels and the wide center console are finished in the same material.

The Nardi steering wheel is wrapped in leather and frames the factory VDO instrumentation, including a 220-kph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline.

There are wood accents and inserts on the dashboard, door panels, and the center console. The truck features a manual gearbox that features a dogleg shift pattern. There is another lever between the driver’s seat and center console that controls the transfer case. This 1989 model even features an air conditioning system and power windows. A custom Kenwood CD player is mounted on the ceiling console.

What Powers This Beast?

Under the hood is a 5.2-liter, quad-cam V-12 engine that it shares with the Countach.

It, however, made 455 horses here, 35 more than its supercar counterpart. Power is sent to the wheels via a five-speed manual transmission and a two-speed transfer case. The fuel-injection system features a unique airbox with twin filtration canisters.

The LM002 is said to take 7.7 seconds to hit the 60 mph mark from a standstill, which is quite a big deal considering that it weighs over 6,800 pounds, thanks to the steel tube frame and the heavy panels.

The independent suspension features unequal-length control arms and coil springs front and rear. Coming to the braking, it is managed by a twin-caliper, ventilated-disc configuration up front and 12-inch drums at the rear.

The truck has just over 4,000 kilometers on the odo, which is approximately 2,500 miles. The selling dealer is offering the truck with a driver’s handbook, period literature, tools, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Washington title. The dealer also noted that an oil change and inspection were performed last year. At the time of writing this article, the LM002’s current bid stands at $150,000.
