While we love debating horsepower and performance specs as much as the next petrol head, it’s important to remember that, at the end of the day, cars are meant to be driven, preferably on some winding stretch of tarmac strung through a slice of stunning natural beauty. Luckily, those of us residing in the U.S. have plenty of options when it comes to experiencing such pleasures, and now, travel tech company Expedia has rendered five of the best driving roads in the U.S. in a series of pixel art videos. Taking inspiration from classic arcade racers like Sega’s Out Run (1986), these videos are definitely getting us hyped to get out there for a drive.

Olympic Peninsula Loop, Washington

Moss-covered trees and snow-capped misty mountains punctuate this drive through the Pacific Northwest, where the beauty of temperate rainforests and the crystal-clear water of Lake Crescent offer ample opportunities to explore. If you enjoy mysterious landscapes and hold a pioneering spirit, this is the one for you.

Historic Columbia Highway, Oregon

Continue south from Washington, and you’ll find yourself in Oregon, where the Historic Columbia Highway awaits with epic waterfalls, powerful rivers, and dense forest. Those arriving in the fall will have a chance to take in a stunning array of colors as the trees turn from green to gold.

Big Sur (Pacific Coast Highway), California

I grew up on the central coast of California, so this one is near and dear to my heart. Big Sur is Jack Kerouac country, where the curving two-lane highway runs parallel to the dramatic cliffs that mark the western edge of the U.S. Landmarks like the Bixby Creek Bridge and Nepenthe restaurant provide ample opportunities to take in the breathtaking coastline, while soaring redwood forests creep towards the crashing waves below. It’s no wonder this is the traditional destination for the annual Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance.

Million Dollar Highway, Colorado

Stretching from Durango to Ridgway, the Million Dollar Highway is cut right out of the mountainside, snaking its way though 25 miles of western Colorado. Offering carving switchbacks and eye-popping drop-offs, this road provides views as valuable as its name would suggest.

89A, Arizona

Out of the forests and into the red rock and blue sky of the desert, 89A connects Sedona and Flagstaff with surprisingly diverse scenery. Offering cacti and pine forests, rock formations and hidden creek canyons, 89A is a real treat to drive.
