Mercedes-AMG is hard at work applying the finishing touches on the most powerful GT 4-Door Coupe one will be able to buy. The model in question is dubbed the GT 73e, a plug-in hybrid with a huge focus on performance. How huge? Think Formula 1 huge.

Carmakers operating in the higher echelons of the industry have been harnessing their motorsport presence into making lighter, quicker, and nimbler road-going cars for quite some time. Of course, there is nothing nimble about the AMG-GT 4-Door luxo-barge, but the performance is obviously there. And with the arrival of the AMG-GT 73e, the said performance is getting a serious hike.

Coincidence? We think not. This is not the first nor the last time a carmaker puts its racing know-how to good use (i.e., in a road-legal car), however, we still do not know exactly what sort of oomph will the 73e provide.

Motor1, for example, believes that the Mercedes-AMG GT 73e will get the stalwart twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 aided by a hybrid setup (electric motor or motors + battery pack, most likely) for a total system output of over 800 horsepower.

To put things into context, the AMG One hypercar is being developed as we speak with input from F1 Champion Lewis Hamilton. What’s more, the One is fitted with an F1-derived hybrid powertrain that mixes together a 1.6-liter single-turbo V-6 that revs to 11,000 rpm and four e-motors – two driving the front axle, one mounted to the V-6’s crank, and another one slotted inside the turbocharger.

It remains to be seen what sort of arrangement AMG had in mind for the GT 73e, but we might see similar approaches being implemented throughout the rest of the Mercedes-AMG range in the following years.
