To the surprise of absolutely no one, the Aston Martin AM-RB 001 is getting massive interest from prospective customers. Sure, it’s going to cost in excess of $3 million and the estimated launch date isn’t until 2020, but that hasn’t stopped at least 450 customers from voicing their interest in the hypercar, so says Simon Sproule, Aston Martin’s director of global marketing communications.

Speaking with Motoring Australia, Sproule indicated that upon the AM-RB 001’s revelation in July, the British automaker already received 370 requests to be listed for the car. Now that number is up to 450 and all of this comes well after Aston Martin announce plans to cap production of the hypercar to just 99 units.

Turns out, a lot of people are already jostling to be included among the 99 lucky owners of the AM-RB 001, even though it’s not clear if Aston Martin will have a stringent selection process to determine the owners like Ford recently did with the new GT supercar. What’s clear is that people are tripping over themselves and others to get a hold of the AM-RB 001.

In related news, Aston Martin design boss Marek Reichman also confirmed reports that the British automaker plans to launch a mid-engine sports car that will be based on the same platform as the AM-RB 001. That model won’t get the same F1-inspired aerodynamic qualities, nor will it be subjected to the same kind of automotive diet as the hypercar. But it will be released at some point after 2020 and it will be packaged in a similar carbon fiber chassis similar to the range of mid-engine sports cars that McLaren has been producing in recent years.

More than just a one-off hypercar

If there’s anything that the overwhelmingly positive reception surrounding the AM-RB 001 is telling us, it’s that there will always be a market for multi-million hypercars, not matter what the industry is telling us. It happened a few years ago with the the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and the Porsche 918 Spyder. It also happened with the Koenigsegg One:1 and most recently, the Bugatti Chiron. Now it appears that Aston Martin will have a buying frenzy on its hands when it launches the AM-RB 001.

The simple reason behind that is like any other serious collector, car collectors are very meticulous with the cars they add to their collection. The phrase “all of them, or none of them” usually applies and we saw that when the three hybrid hypercars were released. A lot of them bought all three so they could complete the “set.” It’s no different from somebody trying to buy old vinyl records of the Beatles and the need to have all of them. Rest assured, a lot of the people who have raised their hands wanting to buy the AM-RB 001 are the same people who already have a list of exotics to their name. It’s the rule of collecting; either you have all of them, or you have none of them.

This, of course, bodes very well for Aston Martin. The automaker wants, more than anything else, for the AM-RB 001 to turn into a legacy car, the kind that will be talked about for years to come as having made an indelible imprint on the exotic hypercar market. The fact that demand is already three times the supply Aston Martin plans to build means that the AM-RB 001 is already on its way to making Aston Martin history.
