In a recent interview with the German magazine, Auto Motor Und Sport, Audi has confirmed that a third sports car model is currently under development. We can turn the wheels in our head as long as we want, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that this sports car is most likely the production version of the recently launched E-tron Spyder Concept.

"Besides the Audi TT and R8, there is definitely still room for another sports car series," said Michael Dick, head of technical development at Audi. He also confirmed that the third sports car would be based off of the production cars showcased at the Paris and Detroit auto shows, the latest version of the E-tron concept unveiled at the Paris Auto Show in particular.

If our assumptions prove to be true, then this third sports car version will be known as the R4 and is rumored to be launched in 2013. The R4 will use a smaller powerplant than the ones found in the Audi TT. This means that we will see a range of 1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI, and 2.0TDI engines. The engine from the newly launched Audi TT RS might also be used in a powerful high-performance version of the R4.

All of the sports cars at that level are beyond the limits of 99.99 of drivers anyway.

Wow, it looks like Audi is serious about adding a relatively affordable mid-engined sports car to their lineup with these concepts. Audi has been on a role lately (except for the ugly (IMO) A7) offering good quality stylish cars with some sporting character. Hats off to them.
